Book Hone Heke

Download or read book Hone Heke written by Paul Moon and published by David Ling Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This biography is a captivating account of the life of the Nga Puhi warrior chief Hone Heke. It is set against a background of political turmoil and ethnic tension, and at almost every turn, the reader will be surprised at the remarkable events and circumstances that engulfed New Zealand in the mid 1840s. Most New Zealanders know little of Heke except that he was the man who chopped down the flagpole. Now, Moon's research has revealed far more about this warrior who at one stage seemed to hold the future of the colony in his hand. Moon has portrayed Heke in an honest light and has combined his qualities, strengths, weaknesses and vanities in such a way that he breathes life on every page.

Book The Agony of Greek Jews 1940 1945

Download or read book The Agony of Greek Jews 1940 1945 written by Steven B. Bowman and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2009-10-07 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Agony of Greek Jews tells the story of modern Greek Jewry as it came under the control of the Kingdom of Greece during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In particular, it deals with the vicissitudes of those Jews who held Greek citizenship during the interwar and wartime periods. Individual chapters address the participation of Greek and Palestinian Jews in the 1941 fighting with Italy and Germany, the roles of Jews in the Greek Resistance, aid, and rescue attempts, and the problems faced by Jews who returned from the camps and the mountains in the aftermath of the German retreat. Bowman focuses on the fate of one minority group of Greek citizens during the war and explores various aspects of its relations with the conquerors, the conquered, and concerned bystanders. His book contains new archival material and interviews with survivors. It supersedes much of the general literature on the subject of Greek Jewry.

Book Adolf Douai 1819 1888

Download or read book Adolf Douai 1819 1888 written by Justine Davis Randers-Pehrson and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 2000 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mid-nineteenth-century Germany and the United States constitute the background for the life story of Adolf Douai as educator, author, editor, and self-declared radical. A member of the 1848 revolutionary Landtag of Saxe-Altenburg, he was imprisoned by reactionaries and later forced to flee the country. His career in the United States illustrates general sociopolitical conditions faced by German Forty-Eighters arriving as refugees. In Texas, Douai edited an abolitionist newspaper for three years, but threats by Know-Nothings forced him to flee to the north, where he was recruited by organizers of the new Republican Party, who hoped to attract German voters for Frémont (1856) and Lincoln (1860). Douai is generally associated with the Fröbel kindergarten system. His contacts included Robert Blum, Mikhail Bakunin, Frederick Law Olmsted, and Louis Agassiz.

Download or read book Anatomy Museum written by Elizabeth Hallam and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2016-06-15 with total page 523 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wild success of the traveling Body Worlds exhibition is testimony to the powerful allure that human bodies can have when opened up for display in gallery spaces. But while anatomy museums have shown their visitors much about bodies, they themselves are something of an obscure phenomenon, with their incredible technological developments and complex uses of visual images and the flesh itself remaining largely under researched. This book investigates anatomy museums in Western settings, revealing how they have operated in the often passionate pursuit of knowledge that inspires both fascination and fear. Elizabeth Hallam explores these museums, past and present, showing how they display the human body—whether naked, stripped of skin, completely dissected, or rendered in the form of drawings, three-dimensional models, x-rays, or films. She identifies within anatomy museums a diverse array of related issues—from the representation of deceased bodies in art to the aesthetics of science, from body donation to techniques for preserving corpses and ritualized practices for disposing of the dead. Probing these matters through in-depth study, Anatomy Museum unearths a strange and compelling cultural history of the spaces human bodies are made to occupy when displayed after death.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the morning of 3 January 1941, Australians of the 6th Division led an assault against the Italian colonial fortress village of Bardia in Libya, not far from the Egyptian-Libyan frontier. The ensuing battle was the second of the First Libyan Campaign, but the first battle of the Second World War planned and fought predominantly by Australians. The fortress fell to the attackers a little over two days after the attack began, in what could only be described as a remarkable victory. At a cost of 130 killed and 326 wounded, the 6th Division captured around 40,000 Italian prisoners and very large quantities of military stores and equipment. The victory was heralded at the time in Australia as one of the greatest military achievements of that nation's military history. Quite soon afterwards, however, overshadowed perhaps by Rommel's subsequent desert advances, the tragedy in Greece, and the war in the Pacific, Bardia slipped from the public mind. Very few Australians today have heard of the battle. This book attempts to bring Bardia back into the light.
