Book Pragmatism and the Political Economy of Cultural Revolution 1850 1940

Download or read book Pragmatism and the Political Economy of Cultural Revolution 1850 1940 written by James Livingston and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2000-11-09 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise of corporate capitalism was a cultural revolution as well as an economic event, according to James Livingston. That revolution resides, he argues, in the fundamental reconstruction of selfhood, or subjectivity, that attends the advent of an 'age of surplus' under corporate auspices. From this standpoint, consumer culture represents a transition to a society in which identities as well as incomes are not necessarily derived from the possession of productive labor or property. From the same standpoint, pragmatism and literary naturalism become ways of accommodating the new forms of solidarity and subjectivity enabled by the emergence of corporate capitalism. So conceived, they become ways of articulating alternatives to modern, possessive individualism. Livingston argues accordingly that the flight from pragmatism led by Lewis Mumford was an attempt to refurbish a romantic version of modern, possessive individualism. This attempt still shapes our reading of pragmatism, Livingston claims, and will continue to do so until we understand that William James was not merely a well-meaning middleman between Charles Peirce and John Dewey and that James's pragmatism was both a working model of postmodern subjectivity and a novel critique of capitalism.

Book Truth Errors and Lies

Download or read book Truth Errors and Lies written by Grzegorz W. Kołodko and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2012-09-04 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grzegorz W. Kolodko, one of the world's leading authorities on economics and development policy and a key architect of Poland's successful economic reforms, applies his far-reaching knowledge to the past and future of the world economy, introducing a framework for understanding our global situation that transcends any single discipline or paradigm. Deploying a novel mix of scientific evaluation and personal observation, Kolodko begins with a brief discussion of misinformation and its perpetuation in economics and politics. He criticizes the simplification of complex economic and social issues and investigates the link between developments in the global economy and cultural change, scientific discoveries, and political fluctuations. Underscoring the necessity of conceptual and theoretical innovation in understanding our global economic situation, Kolodko offers a provocative study of globalization and the possibility of coming out ahead in an era of worldwide interdependence. Deeply critical of neoliberalism, which sought to transfer economic control exclusively to the private sector, Kolodko explores the virtues of social-economic development and the new rules of the economic game. He concludes with a look at our near and distant future, questioning whether we have a say in its making.

Book Chinism and New Pragmatism How China s Development Success and Innovative Economic Thinking Contribute to the Global Development

Download or read book Chinism and New Pragmatism How China s Development Success and Innovative Economic Thinking Contribute to the Global Development written by Grzegorz W.Kolodko著 and published by BEIJING BOOK CO. INC.. This book was released on 2022-05-01 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Grzegorz W. Kolodko proposed Chinism firstly, which is a unique combination of the power of the state, with the visible hand, and the market, with the invisible hand. The synergy of these two super-regulators of the economy, society and polity, combined with meritocracy, when rational people make rational decisions in a rational way, made a historical leap of civilization possible. The author begins this book with a concise overview of the essence of New Pragmatism, and then, from the perspectives of its determinants and the consequences and implications for other countries and for the world economy to assess China’s development process. He regards that Chinism is a syncretic economic system based on multiple forms of ownership of means of production, coming hand in hand with centralised power essentially based on meritocracy. The policy implemented by the state is competent and responsible. At the same time, it is oriented to fulfilling long-term strategic goals, to which medium-term and immediate goals are subordinated. Therefore, the author shares his prediction on the world economy: World’s future will increasingly depend on China’s future.Writing about the future, the author naturally refers to the development challenges that China will face in the decade of 2020s and beyond:China has already achieved a lot in its sustainable development, but there is still much to be done, especially in terms of reducing income inequalities and enhancing social cohesion, as well as environmental protection and creating a green economy.

Book Philosophy in the Time of Economic Crisis

Download or read book Philosophy in the Time of Economic Crisis written by Kenneth W. Stikkers and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-08-23 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over 2000 years, economics was studied in the West as a branch of ethics, or moral philosophy. Presently, though, few economists and no textbook in economic orthodoxy claim any close connection between economic science and philosophy. However, might the current ‘crises’ in economics, and in the economics profession have their deep roots in the separation of economics from philosophy and ethics? American pragmatism, among the various contemporary philosophic traditions, lends itself specially to dialogue with economics because of its view of philosophy as an instrument for solving the real, concrete problems of human life, both personal and social. The essays in this volume, drawing heavily on the tradition of pragmatism, suggest that the economic crises of our time (the 2008 collapse of real estate and finance markets) might not be merely technical in nature - that is, the result of faulty applications of economic tools by politicians and policy makers, based up conventional economic models - but also due to the faulty philosophical assumptions underlying those models. These essays suggest that the overcoming of our current economic crises requires that economists once again become moral philosophers, or that philosophers once again engage themselves in economic matters. In either case, this volume aims to foster dialogue between the two disciplines and in that way, contribute to the improvement of contemporary economic life. This book is suitable for those who study political economy, economic theory and economic philosophy.

Book Pragmatism and Development

Download or read book Pragmatism and Development written by Murray Leaf and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1998-07-30 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While European reconstruction after World War II followed the pluralistic Marshall Plan that grounded social order in individual interests and interdependence, the roots of dirigiste planning in South Asia, as in the rest of the Third World, lie mainly in the line of deterministic theories represented by Positivism and Marxism. Despite a national commitment to dirigiste planning, however, India retains substantial interstitial pluralism—pluralism within an overall centralized system—that varies from state to state. This variation is directly reflected in interstate variations in development success. Pragmatic theory, such as that underlying the Marshall Plan, is committed to seeing indigenous thought in its own terms and provides a far more comprehensive analysis of Indian social realities. This study establishes the continuing viability and practicality of the pluralist alternative and identifies what must be done to convert a centralized system to a pluralistic one.

Book The Priority of Democracy

Download or read book The Priority of Democracy written by Jack Knight and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2011-08-22 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why democracy is the best way of deciding how decisions should be made Pragmatism and its consequences are central issues in American politics today, yet scholars rarely examine in detail the relationship between pragmatism and politics. In The Priority of Democracy, Jack Knight and James Johnson systematically explore the subject and make a strong case for adopting a pragmatist approach to democratic politics—and for giving priority to democracy in the process of selecting and reforming political institutions. What is the primary value of democracy? When should we make decisions democratically and when should we rely on markets? And when should we accept the decisions of unelected officials, such as judges or bureaucrats? Knight and Johnson explore how a commitment to pragmatism should affect our answers to such important questions. They conclude that democracy is a good way of determining how these kinds of decisions should be made—even if what the democratic process determines is that not all decisions should be made democratically. So, for example, the democratically elected U.S. Congress may legitimately remove monetary policy from democratic decision-making by putting it under the control of the Federal Reserve. Knight and Johnson argue that pragmatism offers an original and compelling justification of democracy in terms of the unique contributions democratic institutions can make to processes of institutional choice. This focus highlights the important role that democracy plays, not in achieving consensus or commonality, but rather in addressing conflicts. Indeed, Knight and Johnson suggest that democratic politics is perhaps best seen less as a way of reaching consensus or agreement than as a way of structuring the terms of persistent disagreement.

Book Sufficient Reason

Download or read book Sufficient Reason written by Daniel W. Bromley and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2010-12-16 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the standard analysis of economic institutions--which include social conventions, the working rules of an economy, and entitlement regimes (property relations)--economists invoke the same theories they use when analyzing individual behavior. In this profoundly innovative book, Daniel Bromley challenges these theories, arguing instead for "volitional pragmatism" as a plausible way of thinking about the evolution of economic institutions. Economies are always in the process of becoming. Here is a theory of how they become. Bromley argues that standard economic accounts see institutions as mere constraints on otherwise autonomous individual action. Some approaches to institutional economics--particularly the "new" institutional economics--suggest that economic institutions emerge spontaneously from the voluntary interaction of economic agents as they go about pursuing their best advantage. He suggests that this approach misses the central fact that economic institutions are the explicit and intended result of authoritative agents--legislators, judges, administrative officers, heads of states, village leaders--who volitionally decide upon working rules and entitlement regimes whose very purpose is to induce behaviors (and hence plausible outcomes) that constitute the sufficient reasons for the institutional arrangements they create. Bromley's approach avoids the prescriptive consequentialism of contemporary economics and asks, instead, that we see these emergent and evolving institutions as the reasons for the individual and aggregate behavior their very adoption anticipates. These hoped-for outcomes comprise sufficient reasons for new laws, judicial decrees, and administrative rulings, which then become instrumental to the realization of desired individual behaviors and thus aggregate outcomes.

Book Political Catsup with Economy Fries

Download or read book Political Catsup with Economy Fries written by Mel Scanlan Stahl and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-31 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Political Catsup with Economy Fries: Liberalism, Pragmatism, Opportunism, readers are introduced to a simpler political analysis based on an examination of economic policies. Mel Scanlan Stahl describes three different American political ideologies: classical liberalism, modern liberalism and neoliberalism. Primary sources introduce the reader to the ideas and people that have shaped each ideology. Urgent circumstances reveal how each ideology was set into motion under a different set of challenges. Political groups who benefitted the most and least show how the ideology affected groups differently. The helpful and disruptive influence of technologies show how political systems and economic systems have had to change with the times. And policies that have harmed the economy and how America recovered from them show that dark economic times needn't lead to economic catastrophe. Bad policies have required reform in the past and identifying current policies ripe for change can lead the U.S. to a better future. The reader learns how the action arena for politics and economics receive different social cues and have different kinds of incentives. Readers learn that three areas, finance, war and the law affect both political and economic choices and therefore have grave influence over social outcomes. Extraordinary attention is needed in these areas to balance diverse interests through good policies. Everyone wants to know why policies in the U.S. aren't creating prosperity. People don't like the "new normal." Americans want their government to work better in support of a healthier economy. Where did America take a wrong turn? And now with the U.S. in trouble and an election looming that seems to offer little hope of economic or political relief, this book helps people understand better policy approaches in government that could provide solutions. Debt saturated fiscal policy, the overprinted fiat monetary system under Federal Reserve experimentation, greater militarization with seemingly endless wars in the Middle East, and fewer gainful jobs but with higher taxes, are alarming trends that worry Americans at every turn. This book helps people to understand political stakes, how governmental power has been used differently during each ideological period and how to improve our chances for prosperity.

Book The Hand Behind the Invisible Hand

Download or read book The Hand Behind the Invisible Hand written by Mittermaier, Karl and published by Bristol University Press. This book was released on 2020-07-22 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Available Open Access under CC-BY-NC-ND Made famous by the Enlightenment thinker Adam Smith, the concept of an ‘invisible hand’ might be taken to imply that a government that governs least governs the best, from the viewpoint of society. Here an invisible hand appears to represent unfettered market forces. Drawing from this much-contested notion, Mittermaier indicates why such a view represents only one side of the story and distinguishes between what he calls pragmatic and dogmatic free marketeers. Published posthumously, with new contributions by Daniel Klein, Rod O’Donnell and Christopher Torr, this book outlines Mittermaier’s main thesis and his relevance for ongoing debates within economics, politics, sociology and philosophy.
