  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 52 pages

Download or read book Guinea Bissau written by Jens Kovsted and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In June 1998, Guinea-Bissau was thrown into conflict by a military revolt. This led to 11 months of fighting, extensive loss of life, and the displacement of up to a third of the country's population. This paper discusses the political economy of the conflict, the difficulties in negotiating its end, and the tasks that now face donors and national actors in creating a state capable of directing the development process. Formidable constraints exist including the government's dire fiscal situation, the demands of the army, and an unsustainable debt position. The paper argues that the current institutional distinction between emergency relief and development aid hinders an effective focus on conflict prevention, and proposes a 'Win-Hold-Win' strategy for donors in their efforts to achieve reconstruction, political stability and economic reform. The paper concludes by stressing the wider implications of Guinea-Bissau's experience and the challenges it still faces.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper explains the cashew economy and the unfolding of the 2017 campaign. At least half of all households are thought to be engaged in production, commercialization, or exportation of cashew nuts. The activity has at least four macroeconomic impacts: one, it injects liquidity to producers; two, owing to producers’ high propensity to consume, it impacts the price level; third, it is the main provider of foreign exchange via exports; and fourth, it is an important source of fiscal revenues. Despite streamlining of marketing arrangements over the years, cashew production is still subject to significant government intervention. Vested interests have traditionally permeated public policies, with nontransparent issuance of licenses and permits used in some instances to block competition. Cashew production started to expand during the 1980s and yearly output has over the years increased to currently about 200,000 tons. Native of north Brazil, cashew trees were introduced by the Portuguese during the colonial period but output remained negligible through to the country’s independence in 1973.

Book Economic Transition in Guinea

Download or read book Economic Transition in Guinea written by David E. Sahn and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 1996-11-01 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, the Republic of Guinea has shed its reputation as one of the most tightly controlled state economies in Africa, leaving behind a cloistered era marked by an extraordinarily closed economic and political system. In breaking with its dismal past, Guinea has launched an ambitious program of reform which has affected the entire range of the country's institutions, regulations, and markets. Culling data from the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the United Nations, and numerous interviews and previously unpublished government data, Jehan Arulpragasam and David E. Sahn here present an overview of the Guinean economy, and its evolution—from independence, through crisis, to reform—and model implications of these changes for economic performance and living standards of the poor. Highlighting the chasm between theory and practice, between well-intentioned program and problematic implementation, the authors reveal how Guinea both parallels and contradicts past experiences of economic reform in Africa. Most notably, reform in Guinea has been hindered by the weighty administrative, managerial, and logistical demands of undertaking a vast battery of economic adjustments, all in one fell swoop. The most detailed and informative study of the Guinean economy to date, Economic Transition in Guinea illustrates not only the successes of the nation's reform agenda, but also the fundamental constraints to development that often lie beyond the reach of such reform.

Guinea-Bissau Environmental Information Book. Political fault lines reopened in Guinea-Bissau after President Jose Mario Vaz sacked the government of the fragile West African country amid a mounting power struggle with the prime minister. Still haunted by a past of civil war and coups d'tat, Guinea-Bissau seems headed for yet another political struggle with grave repercussions. International donors, including the European Union, pledged $1.1 billion in March for Guinea-Bissau to support a 10-year development plan after years of political instability. The official language is Portuguese, although many people also speak Creole and other local languages.
