Book The Demographic Revolution in Modern Egypt

Download or read book The Demographic Revolution in Modern Egypt written by Warren C. Robinson and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2006 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Demographic Revolution in Modern Egypt tells the dramatic story of Egypt's transition in the last two decades from staggeringly high to low fertility and mortality rates. Scholars Warren C. Robinson and Fatma H. El-Zanaty especially delve into the reasons for the decline in fertility, including the relative success of Egypt's recent public initiatives in family planning. Robinson and El-Zanaty compellingly show the importance of continued demographic stability in Egypt for that nation, the Middle East, and indeed the world. The authors point to Egypt's optimistic progress as a model for other countries facing out-of-control birthrates wreaking havoc with economic and social development.

Book Population and Development

Download or read book Population and Development written by Robert L. Cliquet and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-09 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the onset of modernisation the world population has doubled several times and will soon reach 6 billion of people. The annual rate of increase in the world population is approximately 90 million people. This is the largest absolute level of population growth ever recorded. According to the most recent population projections of the United Nations, the world population will probably double again before stabilising at a stationary level. Ninety percent of the present and future population growth is accounted for by developing countries. The fast increase in the size of the population in many developing countries is a serious obstacle to their attempts to overcome their backwardness, make a substantial improvement to their quality of life, and achieve a sustainable way of exploiting their renewable and non-renewable resources. At the same time, non-sustainable consumption and production patterns in the industrial countries and among wealthy citizens in developing countries, place additional burdens on the planet's natural resources and ecosystems. With a view of considering these problems and elaborating policy guidelines, the United Nations staged its International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Cairo, Egypt, September 5-13, 1994. This monograph deals with the background to the ICPD, its preparation, proceedings, and contents. It also evaluates its results and recommendations by comparing the ICPD Action Programme with the current scientific literature. The ICPD dealt with the key issues concerning the interrelations between population, development and environment, and their causes, and was not limited to marginal issues such as abortion, promiscuity and homosexuality as was the impression given in the media as a result of the way these questions were distorted by the action of religious fundamentalists. The ICPD Action Programme forms an impressive charter with a broad range of relevant policy recommendations. Nevertheless, compared to most of the current scientific literature, the ICPD seems to underestimate the seriousness and urgency of the issues at stake.

In 30 years, our planet will be home to a staggering eight billion people. implementation in most developing countries of population policies and programmes, research and training activities, international, national, and regional conferences, and censuses and demographic surveys geared to resolving this urgent dilemma. In this definitive volume, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) provides a comprehensive distillation of the information assembled by a diverse population taskforce. A valuable resource to anyone interested in population policy, the work assesses the accomplishments of two decades worth of research and implementation and provides a plethora of prescriptive guidelines. Download or read book Family Gender and Population in the Middle East written by Carla Makhlouf Obermeyer and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the spring of 1993, at the invitation of The Population Council, a small group of Middle East researchers representing different backgrounds and disciplines met in Cairo to discuss the ways in which the issues of population being debated on the global scene related to the current situation in the region. A period of intensive research and writing followed, and these efforts culminated in an international symposium entitled "Family, Gender, and Population Policy: International Debates and Middle Eastern Realities," convened in Cairo in early 1994. The essays in this book are revised versions of the presentations made at the symposium: they assess the interplay of economic, political, cultural, and demographic forces that shape the context of population policy in the region.

Book Population Growth in Egypt

Download or read book Population Growth in Egypt written by Mona Khalifa and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Egypt has had success in moderating high birth rates over the past four decades, but has it been enough to remove high fertility from the nation's list of concerns? This paper examines demographic trends in Egypt in terms of how present and future challenges affect the nation and how addressing them will benefit it. This paper sees the need for building on past victories in slowing population growth, so Egypt can reach its stated goal of reducing fertility to replacement level by 2016. The authors see access to contraception and education of women as keys to achieving the economic benefits, reduced environmental pressure, and improved quality of life that a lower growth rate will bring.

Book Arab Political Demography Population growth and natalist policies

Download or read book Arab Political Demography Population growth and natalist policies written by Onn Winckler and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the twentieth century, the Middle East and North African populations, similar to other developing countries worldwide, increased rapidly, climbing from 68 million in 1914, on the eve of World War I, to 325 million in 1998 (including Turkey and Iran). This rapid population growth (an increase of almost five-fold) in less than one century resulted not from massive immigration waves, as was the case in some developed countries such as US, Canada, and Australia, but from high natural increase rates. The textbook format contains a country-by-country analysis using detailed figures and tables, with supplementary sources. The aim of this book is four-fold: First, to examine the phenomenon of the rapid population growth in the Middle East during the twentieth century in line with the Demographic Transition Model. Second, to examine and analyse the various socioeconomic consequences of this growth -- the creation of a wide-based age pyramid and its implications; the rapid urbanization process and increasing housing shortage; increasing governmental expenditures on subsidies of basic foodstuffs and public services, particularly health care, education, and transportation; increasing sh

Book Population Situation Analysis PSA

Book excerpt: The Population Situation Analysis (PSA) provides the basis for an integrated appraisal of the population and reproductive health dynamics and their impacts on poverty, inequality and development. By integrating a micro and macro analytical approach, the population situation analysis clarifies the interactions between individual behaviour and demographic dynamics. The Population Situation Analysis (PSA) responds to demand by countries that international cooperation should promote national capacity-building and recognize national ownership and leadership as prerequisites for development, in accordance with the principles agreed at the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) and the Millennium Declaration. This manual contributes to more efficient evidence-based programming, which relies on increased capacity for data generation, new databases, the consolidation of available evidence and the promotion of the use of hard data.
