Book The Making of a Police Officer

Download or read book The Making of a Police Officer written by Tore Bjørgo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-02-17 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does a more academic type of police education produce new police officers that are reluctant to patrol the streets? What is the impact of gender diversity and political orientation on a police students’ career aspirations and attitudes to policing? These are some of the questions addressed by this longitudinal project, following police students in seven European countries. The unique data material makes it possible to explore a wide range of topics relevant to the future development of policing, police education and police science more generally. Part I presents an overview of the different goals and models of police education in the seven participating countries. Part II describes what type of student is attracted to police education, taking into consideration educational background, political orientation and career aspirations. Part III shows the social impact of police education by examining students’ orientations towards emerging competence areas; students’ career aspirations; and students’ attitudes concerning trust, cynicism and legalism. The overall results show that police students are strikingly similar across different types of police education. Students in academic institutions are at least as interested in street patrolling as students in vocational training institutions. Gender and recruitment policies matters more in relation to career preferences than education models. The national context plays a more important role than the type of police education system. Written in a clear and direct style, this book will appeal to students and scholars in policing, criminology, sociology, social theory and cultural studies and those interested in how police education shapes its graduates.

Book Education Level and Police Use of Force

Download or read book Education Level and Police Use of Force written by John Vespucci and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-05-07 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This brief presents a study addressing the impact of a college degree upon officer use of force. The average American municipal police academy only requires 26 weeks of training, despite previous studies showing overwhelming support that college educated police officers apply more discretion in their use of force than officers without a college degree. Taking into account contemporary public/police conflicts and how American perceptions of police are based largely on officer use of force, this study offers a more current perspective on the profession’s changing dynamic over the past decade. With data gathered from over 400 officers from 143 distinct municipal police agencies in 6 American states, the study examines the association between a college education and the level of force used to gain compliance during arrest situations, and notes discrepancies between previously studied factors and contextual variables. This brief will be useful for researchers of policing and for those involved with police training.

Book Police Educational Characteristics and Curricula

Download or read book Police Educational Characteristics and Curricula written by Larry T. Hoover and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The monograph consists of an examination of the rationale for higher police educational standards, a report of research relevant to the impact of upgrading efforts, a critique of current educational programming, and the explication of a model criminal justice curriculum appropriate for both police and other criminal justice system personnel. Three distinct but related rationales are developed relevant to educational upgrading. The rationales involve police ability to control crime, perform their order maintenance function, and properly exercise discretion. The research reported includes an assessment of current police recruit educational levels: patterns of employment of collegiate recruits; the impact of the Law Enforcement Education Program, police cadet programs, and agency reward programs; the influence of agency characteristics in attracting and retaining collegiate recruits. and the impact of the development of educational programs in law enforcement and criminal justice. An examination of present educational programming postulates several major deficiencies. A model curriculum is proposed which provides a broad theoretical orientation to the entire criminal justice process. The model consists of guidelines for twenty criminal justice courses. Each guideline includes both selected related readings and a content outline.

Book Recruitment and Retention

Download or read book Recruitment and Retention written by Bernard Rostker and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 2007 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since Hurricane Katrina, resignations from the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) have increased, and the department went more than a year without recruiting enough candidates to justify a police academy training course. The authors present practical recommendations for change that could help the NOPD improve recruiting and retention. Issues addressed include the lack of affordable post-Katrina housing, the fact that the families of many police officers no longer live in the New Orleans area, the destroyed departmental infrastructure, and a budget that does not provide enough resources to meet basic needs. They focus on compensation, including housing; the promotion process and the career management system; recruiting; the mix of officers and civilians; and ways to improve the morale of the NOPD. The recommendations, which are specifically tailored to the unique circumstances of the NOPD, include (1) using civilian employees, where appropriate, for jobs currently being performed by uniformed officers; (2) developing a proactive recruiting program; (3) offering some of the city's housing stock in-kind to police officers or selling the property and using the proceeds to improve compensation; (4) increasing the frequency of promotion examinations; (5) eliminating the backlog of promotions to higher levels in the department; (6) restructuring compensation to attract recruits and retain serving officers; (7) establishing a first-responders charter school; and (8) rebuilding the police infrastructure to improve morale.

Book A Study and Refinement of the Police Recruitment and Selection System Commonwealth of Massachusetts

Download or read book A Study and Refinement of the Police Recruitment and Selection System Commonwealth of Massachusetts written by Bio-Dynamics (Firm) and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document presents the executive summaries of the three volumes comprising a study of the police recruitment and selection system in Massachusetts. The study was conducted at the request of the Division of Civil Service and the Civil Service Commission of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The findings have implications not only for Massachusetts but also for other States' systems and for civil service recruitment and selection procedures in general. An analysis of the patrol officer's job was based on a literature review, interviews with police personnel, and data collected on a task analysis questionnaire. Patrol officers' functions were divided into the categories of order maintenance, law enforcement, and public service. Using a description of the model police officer, positive selection criteria for entry level positions were developed and compared with existing criteria. The police entrance examination received special attention. Among recommendations for selection criteria were that age requirements be open and flexible, weight and height requirements be proportional rather than absolute, good character be determined on the basis of positive evidence, and that high school graduation or an equivalency certificate be the only acceptable educational requirement. Reordering of selection procedures and a revision of several forms and applications were also recommended to produce an orderly and simplified selection system. The report concluded that the recruitment system is inadequate and that active recruitment should be a localized activity meeting definite personnel needs. Recruitment campaigns should identify the target population to determine motivating factors, consider the communication channels to deliver the message most effectively, and use such communication methods as recruitment teams and posters. Footnotes are included.

Book To Protect and to Serve

Download or read book To Protect and to Serve written by Nelson Lim and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 2009 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) is in the middle of a five-year hiring plan to increase the number of sworn officers in the department by 1,000 and achieve a force strength of more than 10,000 officers for the first time in its history. Thus far, working together with the City of Los Angeles Personnel Department's Public Safety Bureau (PSB), the LAPD is on track to achieve this ambitious goal. However, the personnel department and the LAPD have been operating close to the margin, often meeting their hiring quota at the very end of the month. In addition, the LAPD is under consent decrees that stipulate greater diversity in hiring its officers. This book assists the LAPD in achieving its recruiting and diversity goals by offering ways to improve productivity and efficiency in the recruiting process. It begins by identifying potential untapped local recruiting markets. It also provides a model of viable candidates that the LAPD and the personnel department can use to target its recruitment and to prioritize applicants while still maintaining its diversity hiring goal. Finally, it recommends ways to improve productivity of the PSB Background Investigation Division.

Book Police Officer Recruitment

Download or read book Police Officer Recruitment written by Dennis W. Bulen and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design for this study was a 2 X 2 X 2 completely crossed fixed-factor analysis of variance. The study was exploratory in nature due to the lack of previous research about factors such as those described above. The study was also a recruitment simulation such as those conducted in the private and education sectors. The ANOVA did not detect statistical significance. However, a secondary analysis of police officer demographic variables, involving correlation and step-wise multiple regression analysis as the analytical techniques, determined that age was a significant negative correlate of job rating. This finding led to the suggestion that future studies have a correlation design to allow for the investigation of more personal characteristics as potential predictors of police officer job attraction. Further implications for recruitment practice and future research are discussed.
