Book Retirement Income for Illinois Fire and Police Second Edition

Download or read book Retirement Income for Illinois Fire and Police Second Edition written by Daniel W. Ryan and published by . This book was released on 2017-02-08 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Updated for 2017! "Retirement Income for Illinois Fire and Police," written for the men and women in uniform, provides detailed but simple information on the benefits from each public safety pension system, Social Security, and public employee deferred compensation. Illinois police and fire professionals receive retirement income from a variety of sources, most of which differ from their private-sector friends and neighbors. Their pensions are regulated only by the state; there is no federal oversight or insurance. Social Security benefits may be affected by their police and fire earnings. Their deferred compensation is accumulated and paid out under different rules. Understanding the variations and unique situations is necessary to plan and execute a successful retirement. This book is a one-stop shop for retirement benefit information for Illinois state and local police officers and firefighters. Chicago, suburban and downstate, state police, Cook County, other counties, university and college officers, and small-town professionals in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund. It's all here. The author then expands the scope to examine how public pension plans are structured and funded and discusses some of the "hot topics" in Illinois. How big of a cost-savings will come from the Tier 2 structure? Do police and fire personnel really not live as long as the rest of us? Will municipal bankruptcy endanger Illinois pensions? What can we all do to protect public pensions in Illinois? And more? This information, plus your own knowledge and experience in Illinois public safety, will greatly enhance your understanding of not only your benefits, but also the public pension issues faced by each department, union, employer and the citizens you protect.

Book The Torture Machine

Download or read book The Torture Machine written by Flint Taylor and published by Haymarket Books. This book was released on 2019-03-19 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With his colleagues at the People’s Law Office (PLO), Taylor has argued landmark civil rights cases that have exposed corruption and cover-up within the Chicago Police Department (CPD) and throughout the city’s political machine, from aldermen to the mayor’s office. [TAYLOR’s BOOK] takes the reader from the 1969 murders of Black Panther Party chairman Fred Hampton and Panther Mark Clark—and the historic, thirteen-year trial that followed—through the dogged pursuit of chief detective Jon Burge, the leader of a torture ring within the CPD that used barbaric methods, including electric shock, to elicit false confessions from suspects. Taylor and the PLO gathered evidence from multiple cases to bring suit against the CPD, breaking the department’s “code of silence” that had enabled decades of cover-up. The legal precedents they set have since been adopted in human rights legislation around the world.

  • Author : Laurence Ralph
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press

Download or read book The Torture Letters written by Laurence Ralph and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2020-01-15 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Torture is an open secret in Chicago. Nobody in power wants to acknowledge this grim reality, but everyone knows it happens—and that the torturers are the police. Three to five new claims are submitted to the Torture Inquiry and Relief Commission of Illinois each week. Four hundred cases are currently pending investigation. Between 1972 and 1991, at least 125 black suspects were tortured by Chicago police officers working under former Police Commander Jon Burge. As the more recent revelations from the Homan Square “black site” show, that brutal period is far from a historical anomaly. For more than fifty years, police officers who took an oath to protect and serve have instead beaten, electrocuted, suffocated, and raped hundreds—perhaps thousands—of Chicago residents. In The Torture Letters, Laurence Ralph chronicles the history of torture in Chicago, the burgeoning activist movement against police violence, and the American public’s complicity in perpetuating torture at home and abroad. Engaging with a long tradition of epistolary meditations on racism in the United States, from James Baldwin’s The Fire Next Time to Ta-Nehisi Coates’s Between the World and Me, Ralph offers in this book a collection of open letters written to protesters, victims, students, and others. Through these moving, questing, enraged letters, Ralph bears witness to police violence that began in Burge’s Area Two and follows the city’s networks of torture to the global War on Terror. From Vietnam to Geneva to Guantanamo Bay—Ralph’s story extends as far as the legacy of American imperialism. Combining insights from fourteen years of research on torture with testimonies of victims of police violence, retired officers, lawyers, and protesters, this is a powerful indictment of police violence and a fierce challenge to all Americans to demand an end to the systems that support it. With compassion and careful skill, Ralph uncovers the tangled connections among law enforcement, the political machine, and the courts in Chicago, amplifying the voices of torture victims who are still with us—and lending a voice to those long deceased.

Book The New Chicago Way

Download or read book The New Chicago Way written by Edgar H Bachrach and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 2019-01-16 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For all the wrong reasons, a national spotlight is shining on Chicago. The city has become known for its violence, police abuse, parent and teacher unrest, population decline, and mounting municipal and pension debt. The underlying problem, contend Ed Bachrach and Austin Berg, is that deliberative democracy is dead in the city. Chicago is home to the last strongman political system in urban America. The mayor holds all the power, and any perceived checks on mayoral control are often proven illusory. Rash decisions have resulted in poor outcomes. The outrageous consequences of unchecked power are evident in government failures in elections, schools, fiscal discipline, corruption, public support for private enterprise, policing, and more. Rather than simply lament the situation, criticize specific leaders, or justify an ideology, Bachrach and Berg compare the decisions about Chicago’s governance and finances with choices made in fourteen other large U.S. cities. The problems that seem unique to Chicago have been encountered elsewhere, and Chicagoans, the authors posit, can learn from the successful solutions other cities have embraced. Chicago government and its citizens must let go of the past to prepare for the future, argue Bachrach and Berg. A future filled with demographic, technological, and economic change requires a government capable of responding and adapting. Reforms can transform the city. The prescriptions for change provided in this book point toward a hopeful future: the New Chicago Way.
