Can we live in such a way that we relate to suffering with the people who suffer, stand with people who face difficulties, laugh with the people who laugh and run to the people who need us? Of course. We all need a compass to give us perspective. The Bible is that compass for me. In it, I have discovered we can learn about how God made a difference in this world by sending His Son to become one of us. He suffered like we suffer. He shared his life with others. He didn't need to, and He certainly made Himself vulnerable for doing so. But He stands as a lasting example to all who come after Him how we can make a difference by doing the same, whether we are police officers, realtors, doctors, or any other people related profession. This book is reflective and inspirational, intended to ask questions worth contemplating. Combining real world experience as a police officer and parallel stories in the Bible, we can discover that the challenges, questions and struggles we face today are no different than the issues mankind has faced for thousands of years. The goal is for you and me to understand both well enough that we can stand together with others in their struggles. As Christ became one of us, perhaps others will say that about us.

Book excerpt: Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) has over the last decade made an increasing mark in several fields, notably health and medicine, education and social welfare. In recent years it has begun to make its mark in criminal justice. As engagement with EBP has spread, it has begun to evolve from what might be regarded as a somewhat narrow doctrine and orthodoxy to something more complex and various. Often criminological research has been at odds with the assumptions, conventions and methodologies associated with first generation EBP. In that context EBP poses a challenge to the research community and existing evidence base and is, accordingly, hotly controversial. This book is a welcome and timely contribution to current debates on evidence-based practice in policing. With a sharp conceptual focus, the chapters provide a critical examination of the recent history of EBP in academic, policy and practitioner communities, evaluate key dimensions of its application to policing, challenge established understandings and pave the way for a much needed change in how research 'evidence' is perceived, generated, transferred, implemented and evaluated.

What is the impact of gender diversity and political orientation on a police students’ career aspirations and attitudes to policing? These are some of the questions addressed by this longitudinal project, following police students in seven European countries. The unique data material makes it possible to explore a wide range of topics relevant to the future development of policing, police education and police science more generally. Part I presents an overview of the different goals and models of police education in the seven participating countries. Part II describes what type of student is attracted to police education, taking into consideration educational background, political orientation and career aspirations. Part III shows the social impact of police education by examining students’ orientations towards emerging competence areas; students’ career aspirations; and students’ attitudes concerning trust, cynicism and legalism. The overall results show that police students are strikingly similar across different types of police education. Students in academic institutions are at least as interested in street patrolling as students in vocational training institutions. Gender and recruitment policies matters more in relation to career preferences than education models. The national context plays a more important role than the type of police education system. Written in a clear and direct style, this book will appeal to students and scholars in policing, criminology, sociology, social theory and cultural studies and those interested in how police education shapes its graduates.
