Book Novel On Wafer Radiation Pattern Measurement Technique for Mems Actuator Based Reconfigurable Patch Antennas

Download or read book Novel On Wafer Radiation Pattern Measurement Technique for Mems Actuator Based Reconfigurable Patch Antennas written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-06-20 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper presents a novel on-wafer, antenna far field pattern measurement technique for microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) based reconfigurable patch antennas. The measurement technique significantly reduces the time and the cost associated with the characterization of printed antennas, fabricated on a semiconductor wafer or dielectric substrate. To measure the radiation patterns, the RF probe station is modified to accommodate an open-ended rectangular waveguide as the rotating linearly polarized sampling antenna. The open-ended waveguide is attached through a coaxial rotary joint to a Plexiglas(Trademark) arm and is driven along an arc by a stepper motor. Thus, the spinning open-ended waveguide can sample the relative field intensity of the patch as a function of the angle from bore sight. The experimental results include the measured linearly polarized and circularly polarized radiation patterns for MEMS-based frequency reconfigurable rectangular and polarization reconfigurable nearly square patch antennas, respectively. Book Reconfigurable Antennas

Download or read book Reconfigurable Antennas written by Jennifer T. Bernhard and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-05-31 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This lecture explores the emerging area of reconfigurable antennas from basic concepts that provide insight into fundamental design approaches to advanced techniques and examples that offer important new capabilities for next-generation applications. Antennas are necessary and critical components of communication and radar systems, but sometimes their inability to adjust to new operating scenarios can limit system performance. Making antennas reconfigurable so that their behavior can adapt with changing system requirements or environmental conditions can ameliorate or eliminate these restrictions and provide additional levels of functionality for any system. For example, reconfigurable antennas on portable wireless devices can help to improve a noisy connection or redirect transmitted power to conserve battery life. In large phased arrays, reconfigurable antennas could be used to provide additional capabilities that may result in wider instantaneous frequency bandwidths, more extensive scan volumes, and radiation patterns with more desirable side lobe distributions. Written for individuals with a range of experience, from those with only limited prior knowledge of antennas to those working in the field today, this lecture provides both theoretical foundations and practical considerations for those who want to learn more about this exciting subject. Contents: Introduction / Definitions of Critical Parameters for Antenna Operation / Linkage Between Frequency Response and Radiation Characteristics: Implications for Reconfigurable Antennas / Methods for Achieving Frequency Response Reconfigurability / Methods for Achieving Polarization Reconfigurability / Methods for Achieving Radiation Pattern Reconfigurability / Methods for Achieving Compound Reconfigurable Antennas / Practical Issues for Implementing Reconfigurable Antennas / Conclusions and Directions for Future work

Book Antennas for Ubiquitous Radio Services in a Wireless Information Society

Download or read book Antennas for Ubiquitous Radio Services in a Wireless Information Society written by Ioan Ernest Lager and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wireless applications are now an integral part of everyday life. On the one hand, these applications are being praised for making lives better by facilitating efficient communication and effectively treating disease. On the other hand, they are criticised for invading privacy and representing a potential health hazard. In any case, we are aware of them everywhere in sound, image and data carrying systems, but they are also intrinsic to weather and traffic monitoring systems and in defence and security technology. In recognition of the need for continuous and sustained effort in the field of antenna engineering, the WiSE project (Wide Band Sparse Element Array Antennas) was initiated in 2004 to assemble a catalogue of wide-band radiators and explore the functional possibilities of a shared aperture concept. This book is a collection of papers which offers a retrospective of the WiSE project s main achievements, whilst also assessing their relevance within a wider antenna engineering perspective. There is a constant demand from wireless systems to provide increased performance; higher channel transmission capacity for multimedia and the pattern shaping and beam agility required for high-end radar and space-borne telecommunications. Addressing innovative concepts and state-of-the-art aspects in array antenna design, manufacturing and measurement, this volume provides an overview of the increasingly complex functionalities demanded by evolving radio services. IOS Press is an international science, technical and medical publisher of high-quality books for academics, scientists, and professionals in all fields. Book Tunable Patch Antennas Using Microelectromechanical Systems

Download or read book Tunable Patch Antennas Using Microelectromechanical Systems written by Steven Christopher Yee and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Patch antennas are enablers in wireless applications due to their manufacturability, conformability, low cost, and low weight. However, they have narrow bandwidths and fixed operating frequencies that limit their utility when frequency agility is critical. The solution is a tunable patch antenna that retains the desirable features of its fixed frequency counterparts. Patch antennas can be tuned without changes in geometry through loading with variable capacitors or inductors. These components must be small, compatible with antenna and integrated electronics processing, and electrically controlled. Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) variable components have these characteristics and have been applied in reconfigurable patch antennas. Loading with MEMS capacitors is a more mature technology while the use of MEMS inductors is in its infancy. Antennas tuned with both MEMS variable inductors and capacitors in combination have not been reported. This research presents tunable patch antennas using MEMS variable inductors and capacitors co-fabricated in the same process.
