Book Polar Icebreakers in a Changing World

Download or read book Polar Icebreakers in a Changing World written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-03-14 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States has enduring national and strategic interests in the polar regions, including citizens living above the Arctic circle and three year-round scientific stations in the Antarctic. Polar icebreaking ships are needed to access both regions. Over the past several decades, the U.S. government has supported a fleet of four icebreakersâ€"three multi-mission U.S. Coast Guard ships (the POLAR SEA, POLAR STAR, and HEALY) and the National Science Foundation's PALMER, which is dedicated solely to scientific research. Today, the POLAR STAR and the POLAR SEA are at the end of their service lives, and a lack of funds and no plans for an extension of the program has put U.S. icebreaking capability at risk. This report concludes that the United States should continue to support its interests in the Arctic and Antarctic for multiple missions, including maintaining leadership in polar science. The report recommends that the United States immediately program, budget, design, and construct two new polar icebreakers to be operated by the U.S. Coast Guard. The POLAR SEA should remain mission capable and the POLAR STAR should remain available for reactivation until the new polar icebreakers enter service. The U.S. Coast Guard should be provided sufficient operations and maintenance budget to support an increased, regular, and influential presence in the Arctic, with support from other agencies. The report also calls for a Presidential Decision Directive to clearly align agency responsibilities and budgetary authorities.

Download or read book Submarines Under Ice written by Marion D. Williams and published by US Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book treats not only Wilkins's Nautilus expedition of 1931 but the diesel- and battery-powered submarine operations of the l94Os and l95Os as well as the era of nuclear-powered boats. It shows how rapid advances in science and technology helped overcome so many obstacles that today the Arctic Ocean is considered the submariner's private sea." "Author Marion Williams, a member of the U.S. Navy's submarine service for many years, tells the story from the viewpoint of the submariners themselves. To do so, he consulted countless official and unofficial documents and recently declassified reports, interviewed participants, and drew on his own professional knowledge. He provides dramatic details of every operation and also describes the military and political ramifications of each cruise. The narrative is certain to appeal to readers of all ages who enjoy tales of exploration and discovery. Dozens of photographs, many never before published, help bring the story to life."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved

Book Guidelines for Ships Operating in Polar Waters

Download or read book Guidelines for Ships Operating in Polar Waters written by International Maritime Organization and published by IMO Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ships operating in the Arctic and Antarctic environments are exposed to a number of unique risks. Poor weather conditions and the relative lack of good charts, communication systems and other navigational aids pose challenges for mariners. The remoteness of the areas makes rescue or clean-up operations difficult and costly. Cold temperatures may reduce the effectiveness of numerous components of the ship, ranging from deck machinery and emergency equipment to sea suctions. When ice is present, it can impose additional loads on the hull, propulsion system and appendages. The Guidelines for ships operating in polar waters aim at mitigating the additional risk imposed on shipping in the harsh environmental and climatic conditions that exist in polar waters. This publication should be of interest to maritime administrations, ship manufacturers, shipping companies, cruise and tour operators, education institutes and others concerned with the safe operation of ships in polar waters.

Book The Operation of the NOAA Polar Satellite System

Download or read book The Operation of the NOAA Polar Satellite System written by Joseph J. Fortuna and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The operation and maintenance of the NOAA Polar Satellite System involves a great variety of activities in many locations throughout the United States of America. This report is to summarize this system and to provide interested people with a perspective of the operational NOAA polar orbiting satellite system. The NOAA polar system description serves as a reference for developers of short-range modifications of the system. This system description serves as a guide as to how services are generated for users of the system's output. This report is primarily for use within the National Environmental Satellite Service and its parent organization, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. A glossary of terms is included for those less familiar with the system. The reader is cautioned that the system is described either as it was or was intended to be with the introduction of the third operational spacecraft NOAA-3 in the late fall of 1973. Specific plans to update this document in the future have not been made; however, your comments on the document and its need for revision are welcome.

It presents 38 new and original contributions from leading figures and voices in polar research, policy and practice, as well as work from emerging scholars. This handbook aims to approach and understand the Polar Regions as places that are at the forefront of global conversations about some of the most pressing contemporary issues and research questions of our age. The volume provides a discussion of the similarities and differences between the two regions to help deepen understanding and knowledge. Major themes and issues are integrated in the comprehensive introduction chapter by the editors, who are top researchers in their respective fields. The contributions show how polar researchers engage with contemporary debates and use interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches to address new developments as well as map out exciting trajectories for future work in the Arctic and the Antarctic. The handbook provides an easy access to key items of scholarly literature and material otherwise inaccessible or scattered throughout a variety of specialist journals and books.
