Book Poland s competitiveness worldwide and in the EU

Download or read book Poland s competitiveness worldwide and in the EU written by Joanna Mastalerek and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2004-02-23 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject Politics - Region: Eastern Europe, grade: 1,5 (A), Hamburg University of Ecomomy and Policy (European Studies), course: Political Economy of Transition, language: English, abstract: Competitiveness is nowadays one of the central preoccupations of governments and industries wordwide. Especially for reintegrating Central and Eastern European Countries (CEECs) into the world economy these countries ́ national competitiveness plays a crucial role. Even if national competitiveness has become a widespread concept, there still exists no final definition, as scientists point out. Though a first orientation about the concept of competitiveness can provide Michael E. Porter ́s approach, in which he explains: “The only meaningful concept of competitiveness at the national level is national productivity. [...] No nation can be competitive in everything. A nation ́s pool of human and other resources is necessarily limited. The ideal is that these resources be deployed in the most productive uses possible.” Using Porter ́s definition as a first anchor for the assessment of Poland ́s competitiveness, one has to closer examine Poland ́s level of national productivity.

Book Poland in the Single Market

Download or read book Poland in the Single Market written by Anna Visvizi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-10-21 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By all accounts, the case of Poland and its segue to market economy and democracy is a success story: 30 years of uninterrupted growth and development, infrastructure expansion, and modernization of the economy and society. Epochal changes have unfolded in a timespan of merely three decades. Change has taken place so fast that children born in late 1980s and onwards cannot remember what life in Poland under communism was like and cannot relate to it. Also, many elderly people, easy victims of romanticizing their own youth, tend to forget. As a result, the uniqueness of Polish transition and transformation, the boldness and efficiency of reforms, and the success that Polish society mastered together, tend to be undermined today both domestically and internationally. Poland has now been a member of the EU for more than 15 years. During that time, Poland’s image on the EU scene evolved from newcomer, through ‘model child’, champion of growth, to – in some respects – a maverick. This volume’s objective is to remind society, old and young, researchers, scholars and practitioners, that Poland’s success is an outcome of well-thought out and bold structural reforms implemented in a swift and timely manner, of society’s support for these reforms, and of third actors’ benign assistance. Looking back on the 30 years since the collapse of communism, and at the over 15 years of EU membership, this book offers an interdisciplinary, comprehensive and critical insight into factors and processes that have led to today’s Poland.

Book Poland and the knowledge economy

Download or read book Poland and the knowledge economy written by Itzhak Goldberg and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Poland Knowledge Economy Assessment (KEA) aims to provide policy options for securing sustainable growth, and improving competitiveness, by creating an environment conducive to business development, and investment in general, as well as to knowledge generation and absorption via innovation, and learning, in particular, as well as by stimulating investment in innovation, and in learning systems. This KEA argues that efficient, and relevant lifelong learning systems, Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), institutions and funding mechanisms to support innovative research and development (R&D), are essential components of the National Innovation System (NIS). The foremost theme of this report is securing sustainable growth and competitiveness in Poland, by stimulating investment in R&D, and in appropriate learning systems, which have a key role in developing a country's absorptive capacity-the ability to identify, assimilate, and exploit knowledge from both domestic, and external sources. Therefore, policies that support the development of inter-firm linkages, and the capacity to absorb new knowledge that can be gained through such linkages, are crucial elements. As regards R&D and innovation, efforts need to be made to build institutions and provide financial incentives aiming to increase Polish R&D. Nevertheless, it should be stressed that an improvement in the business environment in Poland is a necessary condition for raising the R&D within firms. Most importantly, efforts need to be made to increase the quality, and relevance of the formal education system, ensure the provision of life long learning systems to the entire population, and improve the linkages between academia, the scientific, and business communities that assist the transfer of technology in other countries. It is proposed that the regulatory framework be updated to the European Union (EU) 2002 level, and that the capacity, and market credibility of the Office of Telecommunications and Post Regulation (the regulatory authority), be strengthened in order to sustain competition. The implementation of e-government services for businesses, as well as citizens is key for improving the efficiency, and competitiveness of Polish business

This book was released on 2003-03-27 with total page 690 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The annual Global Competitiveness Report is widely recognized as the world's leading cross-country comparison of data and information relating to economic competitiveness and growth. Over the years, the Report has become the most authoritative and comprehensive assessment of the comparative strengths and weaknesses of national economies throughout the world. The World Economic Forum continues its tradition of excellence with The Global Competitiveness Report 2002-2003, which provides the most updated and recent data, rankings and analysis of 75 industrialized and emerging economies and the latest thinking and research from prominent academics and international institution leaders on global competitiveness. This year's report begins by presenting the widely quoted global competitive index that really comprises two indices-one for growth and one for productivity. It then provides global and regional analyses, with examinations of the competitive landscapes of Africa., Asia, Central and Eastern Europe and Latin America. Essays on a wide range of special topics follow, including national innovative capacity, governance, foreign direct investment, and trade performance. The Report concludes with detailed country profiles, data presentation and an exhaustive survey of senior business executives that touches on business conditions, infrastructure, the character of the regulatory regime, the quality of government, organized labor, corruption and tax evasion. The Global Competitiveness Report 2002-2003 provides essential information for business leaders, government decision-makers and for academics to examine the critical challenges facing a multitude of the world's economies.
