Emiliano Fernández de Pinedo y Fernández (UPV/EHU) analiza el proceso que llevó a las medidas de 1907, a través del avance del proteccionismo en el siglo XIX. José Luis García Ruiz (UCM) revisa las políticas industriales del Franquismo en conexión con la notable industrialización que experimentó España. Mikel Buesa (UCM) explica cómo la desregulación, la privatización y la desintervención en el último cuarto del siglo XX se tradujeron en desindustrialización (con algunas excepciones). How did it achieve this feat? Despite its relevance to countries that have yet to complete that transition, this question has attracted only limited attention. As a result, Spain's development into a prosperous society is a largely under-reported and often misunderstood success story. Unexpected Propserity takes a different look at the questions that usually frame the debate about Spain's economic development. Instead of asking why Spain's catching up was delayed, Calvo-Gonzalez asks how it happened in the first place; instead of focusing on how bad institutions undermined economic prospects, as the literature has done, he explains how growth took place even in the presence of poor institutions. This wider view opens new perspectives on Spain's development path. For example, comparisons are drawn not only with the richest countries but also with those that were in a similar stage of development as Spain. Drawing on a wide range of material, from archival sources to text analytics, the book provides a new account of why reforms were adopted, the role of external and internal factors, as well as that of unintended consequences. The result is an original interpretation of the economic rise of Spain that speaks also to the wider literature on the political economy of reform, the role of industrial and public policy more broadly, and the enduring legacy of political violence and conflict.

Muestra, por una parte, el carácter imperialista de la corona que gobernó sus posesiones del Nuevo Mundo como colonias más que como reinos en el aspecto económico, aunque una de las primeras cosas que el tráfico del cacao puso en evidencia es que la prohibición de la Corona del siglo XVII no detuvo la exportación de cacao, aunque sí frenó el crecimiento de Guayaquil. Por otra parte, la investigación establece el tráfico naviero, los montos de las cargas de cacao que arribaron a Acapulco y las manifestaciones de los precios en el mercado de la ciudad de México y trata de demostrar que la oferta creciente de cacao guayaquil, ayudó a mantener los precios estables en un contexto general de crecimiento de los precios en la segunda parte del siglo XVIII.

Book excerpt: This book aims to explain the variation in the models of economic liberalization across Ibero-America in the last quarter of the twentieth century, and the legacies they produced for the current organization of the political economies. Although the macroeconomics of effective market adjustment evolved in a similar way, the patterns of compensation delivered by neoliberal governments and the type of actors in business and the working class that benefited from them were remarkably different. Etchemendy argues that the most decisive factors that shape adjustment paths are the type of regime and the economic and organizational power with which business and labor emerged from the inward-oriented model. The analysis spans from the origins of state, business and labor industrial actors in the 1930s and 1940s to the politics of compensation under neoliberalism across the Ibero-American world, combined with extensive field work material on Spain, Argentina and Chile.
