Book excerpt: The informal sector denotes the small-scale, unprotected, and loosely regulated activities and self-employment that proliferate in developing countries. This book is about the people who engage in informal activities and the people who study, interpret, intervene in, promote, or attempt to repress or regulate the sector. The authors bring together and evaluate for the first time competing theories, policies, and research findings on the informal sector, dealing with issues of power, ideology, and politics; basic research, applied research, program evaluation, and policymaking; exploitation, entrepreneurship, and opportunity; and poverty and the accumulation of wealth.

Book Migration Remittances And Small Business Development

Download or read book Migration Remittances And Small Business Development written by Sergio Diaz-Briquets and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-07 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 (IRCA) was a manifestation of widespread public concern over the volume of undocumented immigration into the United States. The principal innovation of this legislation-the provision to impose penalties on employers who knowingly hire undocumented immigrants-was a response to this concern. This effort at restriction was tempered in IRCA by other provisions permitting the legalization of two types of undocumented immigrantsthose who had resided in the United States since January 1, 1982; and what were called special agricultural workers (SAWs), persons who had worked in perishable crop agriculture for at least 90 days during specified periods from 1983 to 1986. Approximately 3.1 million persons sought legalization (what is popularly referred to as amnesty) under these two provisions. The breakdown was roughly 1.8 million under the regular program and 1.3 million as SAWs. Mexicans made up 75 percent of the combined legalization requests."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond the Megacity connects and reconnects the global debate on the contemporary urban condition to the Latin American tradition of seeing, considering, and theorizing urbanization from the margins. It develops the approach of "peripheral urbanization" as a way to integrate the theoretical agendas belonging to global suburbanisms, neo-Marxist accounts of planetary urbanization, and postcolonial urban studies, and to move urban theory closer to the complexity and diversity of urbanization in the Global South. From an interdisciplinary perspective, Beyond the Megacity investigates the natures, causes, implications, and politics of current urbanization processes in Latin America. The book draws on case studies from various countries across the region, covering theoretical and disciplinary approaches from the fields of geography, anthropology, sociology, urban studies, agrarian studies, and urban and regional planning, and is written by academics, journalists, practitioners, and scholar-activists. Beyond the Megacity unites these unique perspectives by shifting attention to the places, processes, practices, and bodies of knowledge that have often been neglected in the past.

Book About Fringes Margins and Lucky Dips

Download or read book About Fringes Margins and Lucky Dips written by Paul van Gelder and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concerns Y. Baud: "Women working in the informal sector: the role of technological change and women's organizations". This paper summarises the results of a 1985 seminar on women's work in the informal sector in an international perspective, with special reference to manufacturing production and subcontracting work. Three basic topics were discussed: first, the conceptual aspects of the informal sector and the analysis of women's work from a gender perspective. Second, the impact of technological change on the labour process and the informalisation of women's work both in developed and developing countries. Third, the manner in which women working within the context of casual work relations manage to organise themselves and the strategies they adopt. The constraints which pertain to the socio-political and economic context are highlighted.
