Book Poetry of Arctic and Life Experiences

Download or read book Poetry of Arctic and Life Experiences written by Edward Collinson and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2003 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a child, I could not understand why the children got punished because their parents were going through hard times. It was the child that got the blame for the wrongs of the adult. The child was put into homes that needed workers to help on the farms and they were placed their by the Children's Aid. The family was split up so there was no one to play with and in the end the games were played in the ones own mind. My poem, "I Walk Alone" reflects on my pains as a child experiencing difficult times in foster homes and being separated from my family. When I grew older, to confirm to myself that I had become a man and that I could live on my own, I joined the Canadian Armed Forces. I suppose at the same time, I was looking for friendship. But to tell you the truth, I have never been able to experience a lifetime friendship. I have kept in touch with one army friend, but you could not call it close friends as he did not extend the same willingness to carry on our friendship. This isolation shows up in many of my poems, such as "To Walk in Memories". The abuse caused by the welfare is one of my most heart felt poems as when I retired. The hard time they gave me in trying to get financial assistance for me and my grandchild was a paltry $116/month. This financial difficulty cumulated with the frustration of not been able to work for a living, gave me the anger inside that inspired me to write poetry for this book.I am not a story writer. I did it in poetry because it seems easier for me to express my thoughts in short writings. There are several poems that relate to the challenges I faced with welfare, "Welfare Pay Day" is one such poem. Religion is another hard subject for me as it creates a lot of contradictions both in reading it and listening to someone preaching it."Blame It on My Brother" and "What is Sin?" are two poems that express my thoughts on the ambiguity of religion. In our society we have courts and corruption of courts; they call this law? In "Rule by Elders", I write:"One word in law becomes a book, and in the end the meaning mistook." The drunkenness of judges and lawyers up here was pretty bad. They have tried to clean some of it up but what of the lives they ruined when the were drunk in the court rooms themselves? There is no law when you say to the First Nations that you are under apartheid, which the Indian Act is, but we call it equality. The Indian Act is one law that we cannot have in our society. We cannot have equality when the laws are different for different groups of people. They say it is because of the government. But to my mind, that is even worse as they are the ones that are supposed to make society equal. I have done many years hunting and trapping up here in the Arctic. We had wide open trap lines but you respected the other person's line. If another trapper was on a certain line first, you made your line some place else. Most of us just got enough fur to support our families. It was the white-man that thought himself one step higher and in the end destroyed the life in the bush for both himself and the natives. I have several poems on my life in the bush, for example, "The Hunter".

Book excerpt: Songs, stories, legends and chants of the Eskimo people of the Arctic Rim and Alaska—the Yupik, Inuit, Inupiat, Chukchi, Inuvialiut, Loucheux, Denendeh and other Northern First Nations—are the material from which the word-sketches of Raven’s Children are made. The author prefers not to call this collection ‘poetry,’ but in one way that is what this book is: poetry. Here then is a sort of poetry where stories of life’s experiences are distilled into feelings and thoughts that are universal. Tales taken from real-life travels and adventures among the dwellers of the land of the white dawn are in these pages. Here are tales of love, betrayal, courage, defeat, acceptance, loss, grief, passion, delight, courting, coming of age, birth and death, youth and old age, hunting and surviving. The day-to-day existence; the business of survival in a harsh land is the theme; the people, places and animals of Alaska and the Northland are the subjects. ”These great people, their lives entwined and dependent upon one another in the inhospitable world they inhabit, inspired me to create these word-sketches detailing a land, its people and animals, at many points in time and in many places across the Arctic Rim.”—Jacques L. Condor (Maka Tai Meh)

Discover a plurality of perspectives in this enlightening anthology of stories that turns preconceptions on their head. Gracie sees a chance of fitting in at her South Carolina private school, until a “white trash”–themed Halloween party has her steering clear of the rich kids. Samuel’s Tejano family has both stood up to oppression and been a source of it, but now he’s ready to own his true sexual identity. A Puerto Rican teen in Utah discovers that being a rodeo queen means embracing her heritage, not shedding it. . . . For most of America’s history, rural people and culture have been casually mocked, stereotyped, and, in general, deeply misunderstood. Now an array of short stories, poetry, graphic short stories, and personal essays, along with anecdotes from the authors’ real lives, dives deep into the complexity and diversity of rural America and the people who call it home. Fifteen extraordinary authors—diverse in ethnic background, sexual orientation, geographic location, and socioeconomic status—explore the challenges, beauty, and nuances of growing up in rural America. From a mountain town in New Mexico to the gorges of New York to the arctic tundra of Alaska, you’ll find yourself visiting parts of this country you might not know existed—and meet characters whose lives might be surprisingly similar to your own. Book Cold Starry Night

Download or read book Cold Starry Night written by Claire Fejes and published by Epicenter Press. This book was released on 2016-02-01 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Young Claire Fejes was a promising sculptor and painter in New York City when her husband gave in to "gold fever." She held the unconventional view that her career was as important as his. But in those days, a woman followed her husband, so Claire did--to Fairbanks, last stop on the Alaska Railroad, in the heart of the immense northern territory, where Joe Fejes intended to mine for gold. In a refreshingly candid memoir, Claire describes a remote outpost where the young couple joins a hard breed of Alaskans who transform loneliness into powerful friendships and where the artist overcomes soul-aching cultural isolation. Fairbanks is populated by characters such as the happy Finnish couple who adopt Claire and Joe; the lively Eva McGown, a one-woman social services agency who wears a potent violet perfume and speaks with a sweet Irish brogue; and Fabian Carey, the trapper who loves the wilderness as much as he does opera, literate, and art. Written from the heart, this memoir of post-war Alaska has become a classic with its nostalgic reflections of a simpler time.

Book Virginia Woolf and the Lives Works and Afterlives of the Bront s

Download or read book Virginia Woolf and the Lives Works and Afterlives of the Bront s written by Hilary Newman and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2024-06-15 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her feminist polemic, ‘A Room of One’s Own’, Virginia Woolf famously wrote of the (comparatively recent) literary tradition of female writers: ‘we think back through our mothers if we are women.’ Woolf’s major literary mothers were those women novelists writing during the Victorian period and earlier. Virginia Woolf and the Lives, Works, and Afterlives of the Brontës examines all of Woolf’s writings on the Brontës, across a wide range of genres: juvenilia, novels, literary essays, feminist polemics, diaries and letters. This proves particularly fruitful as Woolf herself was both a creative artist and a literary critic. As a woman, she was ambivalent towards the Victorian world in which she spent her youth: emotionally she remained in thrall to it; but intellectually she developed the modernist novel. After Woolf ceased to write publicly about the Brontës, she continued to engage with them through the Hogarth Press, which she had founded in 1917 with her husband Leonard. She then chose to publish books on the Brontës whose approaches to them she supported. Newman approaches her subject in a Woolfian way: that is, she avoids dogmatism and aims to open up discussion of the lives, works and afterlives of the Brontës as mediated by Woolf, rather than closing it down to one particular interpretation.

Book The Farewell Glacier

    Book Details:
  • Author : Nick Drake
  • Publisher : Bloodaxe Books Limited
  • Release : 2012

  • Pages : 63 pages

Download or read book The Farewell Glacier written by Nick Drake and published by Bloodaxe Books Limited. This book was released on 2012 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The poems in The Farewell Glacier grew out of a journey to the High Arctic. In late 2010 Nick Drake sailed around Svalbad, an archipelago of islands 500 miles north of Norway, with Cape Farewell, the arts climate change organisation. It was the end of the Arctic summer. The sun took eight hours to set. When the sky briefly darkened, the Great Bear turned about their heads as it had for Pythias the Greek, the first European known to have explored this far north. Sailing as close as possible to the vast glaciers that dominate the islands, they saw polar bear prints on pieces of pack ice the size of trucks. And they tried to understand the effects of climate change on the ecosystem of this most crucial and magnificent part of the world. Nick Drake's new collection gathers together voices from across the Arctic past - explorers, whalers, mapmakers, scientists, financiers, the famous and the forgotten - as well as attempting to give voice to the confronting mysteries of the high Arctic: the animal spirits, the shape-shifters and the powers of ice and tundra. It looks into the future, to the year 2100, when this glorious winter Eden will have vanished forever. Many of the poems from The Farewell Glacier were included in the ground-breaking High Arctic exhibition, installed at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich from July 2011 to January 2012, which received substantial national publicity, including a feature on BBC Radio 4's Front Row and national press reviews. 'A scintillating collection of poems...;a mastery of form and tone, and a simple, uncontrived unravelling of emotional and psychological complexities...; If you care about words; if you care about the impossibility but the nobility of trying to express the ineffable in language that is accessible but that stuns, then haunts you, buy this book' - Lloyd Rees, Envoi 'Subtle, funny and tremendously moving. He has an eye for the small detail as well as the big picture. These poems brilliantly evoke time and place' - Jackie Kay
