Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "May Robert's wonderful life and work and heart keep helping others to know that inherent in life . . . is Love." - from the foreword by Daniel Ladinsky "I didn't have much time for poetry when I was young," Robert Holden writes in the introduction to this elegant and inspiring book. "Maybe I was in too much of a hurry. . . . Fortunately for me, one poem after another found their way through my defenses and came to my rescue. Slowly, but surely, I began to see that inside each poem there was a gift waiting for me. A gift to help open up something inside of me-a new awareness, an epiphany, a cure for loneliness, renewed courage, and a call to action." Finding Love Everywhere offers that same gift to you. A luminous collection of original poetry set within a framework of deep wisdom from an acclaimed teacher, it invites you on a journey that will move you and transform you as you awaken to the awareness of love's presence all around you. The 66½ poems in these pages "are meditations with lyrics," Robert explains. "They invite you to be wise, to choose love, and to live your most authentic life."

Book excerpt: In 2015, author Melvin Dowdy's life partner of forty-odd years was paralyzed by a spinal cord stroke. Every function below her waist was negated in some way, and doctors doubted that she would walk again. The two of them were suddenly on a journey that altered every aspect of their lives and offered few promises of recovery. To deal with this, Dowdy knew he needed a practice that would combine mindfulness with acceptance of his experiences, release from assumptions and old habits of the mind, and daily reclarification of life's meaning and purpose. His writing became the primary source of that practice; he learned to write to stay alive. Night Weavers presents a collection of poetry that offers a sample of what adversity has taught him. Resilience is a way of life, not an end to itself. As we learn the art of being with an adversity, we learn the art of being with life in every present moment. Chronicling a period of major loss and recovery, this poetry collection celebrates the beauty and the gravity of being fully human, navigating great sorrows, and nourishing the bonds between people.

Book Now in Color

Download or read book Now in Color written by Jacqueline Balderrama and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Now In Color explores the multigenerational immigrant experience of Mexican-Americans who have escaped violence, faced pressures to assimilate, and are now seeking to reconnect to a fragmented past. These poems illuminate the fluidity of language and of perception through both small hypocrisies and real atrocities. One of Balderrama's strategies is to use the development of motion pictures and Technicolor as a lens through which to examine personal and cultural histories and stereotypes. She also considers bilingual expectations through an innovative series of Spanish definition poems. Balderrama documents pieces of her family's oral tradition and draws connections to ongoing injustices experienced by current migrant families, offering a living picture of a present inevitably tied to and colored by its past. Through the poetics of witness, ekphrasis, portraiture, and family mythos, Now In Color deepens our understanding of hybrid identities and calls attention to those impacted by tensions along the U.S.-Mexico border"--

Book Re writing America

Download or read book Re writing America written by Philip D. Beidler and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With his first book, American Literature and the Experience of Vietnam, Philip Beidler offered a pioneering study of the novels, plays, poetry, and "literature of witness" that sprang from the United States involvement in the Vietnam War. Reviewing the book, the journal American Literature declared, "[It is] more than just an introductory act. It also sets forth what are sure to be lasting types of American literary response to Vietnam, and of the scholarly response to the emerging literature of the war." In Re-Writing America, Beidler charts the ongoing achievements of the men and women who first gained public notice as Vietnam authors and who are now recognized as major literary interpreters of our national life and culture at large. These writers--among them Tim O'Brien, Philip Caputo, Winston Groom, David Rabe, John Balaban, Robert Stone, Michael Herr, Gloria Emerson, and Frances Fitzgerald--have applied in their later efforts, says Beidler, "many of the hard-won lessons of literary sense-making learned in initial works attempting to come explicitly to terms with Vietnam." Beidler argues that the Vietnam authors have done much to reenergize American creative writing and to lead it out of the poststructuralist impasse of texts as endless critiques of language, representation, and authority. With their direct experience of a divisive and frustrating war--"a war not of their own making but of the making of politicians and experts, a war of ancient animosities that cost nearly everything for those involved and settled virtually nothing"--these writers in many ways resemble the celebrated generation of poets and novelists who emerged from World War I. Like their forebears of 1914-18, those of the Vietnam generation have undertaken a common project of cultural revision: to "re-write America," to create an art that, even as it continues to acknowledge the war's painful memory, projects that memory into new dimensions of mythic consciousness for other--and better--times. Beidler fills his book with detailed, illuminating analyses of the writers' works, which, as he notes, have moved across an almost infinite range of subject, genre, and mode. From David Rabe, for example, have come innovative plays in which overt statements on the traumas of Vietnam (The Basic Training of Pavlo Hummel, Streamers) have made way for broader commentaries on sex, power, and violence in American life (In the Boom Boom Room, HurlyBurly). Winstom Groom has moved from Better Times Than These, a rather traditional (even anachronistic) war novel, to further reaches of rambunctious humor in Forrest Gump. And journalist Michael Herr, whose Dispatches memorably defined a Vietnam landscape at once real and hallucinatory, carried his vision into collaborations on the films Apocalypse Now and Full Metal Jacket. As Beidler notes, the immense price that Vietnam exacted from the American soul continues to draw a plethora of interpretations and depictions. Vietnam authors remind us, in Tim O'Brien's words, of "the things they carried." But as Beidler makes clear, they now command us not only to remember but to imagine new possibilities as well.

Book Meditations Before the Windows Fail

Download or read book Meditations Before the Windows Fail written by George Looney and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meditations before the Windows Fail contains meditative, lyric poems that address the desire to translate the world into meaning, since it often seems the world is trying to tell us something. What the speaker of the poems discovers is that any meaning must be found in the flesh, not in the world. In a world composed of loss, the human task is two-fold: to both translate the world into meaning, and to turn toward each other when that translation is found to be, as it always is, inadequate. George Looney's poems are deft and intricate in their use of lineation, of unique phrasing, and of the complex use of a fractured, underlying narrative throughout the book.

Book Meditations on the Mysteries of Life

Download or read book Meditations on the Mysteries of Life written by Patrick J. Leach and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2012-01-11 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Also available in a full-color version. Nerve endings record our thoughts in books like this. Poetry lives on after we turn to stone with epitaphs bestowing our wonders. Grateful I live, reached 61 years this year, working, healthy, sober, fanciful, and deliciously enjoying the journey. Perhaps this is the vacation we planned before we were born, or metaphysical experience we could have no other way, wondering why we are here and what we are supposed to do when the whole point is to experience it to its fullest while trying to live with integrity. Suddenly I find myself exploring the mysteries of life and meditation, that wonderful mindset designed to rejuvenate the soul. Poetry offers such fine glimpses into mysteries, possibilities, room for error when other disciplines are seeking to machine tool everything. Verse frees us from the drudgery and complications of reality. I cannot discipline my brain to write novels. My mind spews out short bursts in poems and paintings, as in life's tasks. Making peace with the way we are is crucial - not the way we'd like to be, or the way other's demand. Let loose, spend some time with me in an easy chair, on a park bench, or enjoy reading in bed. Interesting how the mind sees pictures when reading words. Maybe my paintings will be your pictures. Maybe you'll have your own. Let's delve into some of the mysteries of life, meditating with eyes open, staring into spaces between the words, letting go of the burdens for a while.

Book All That Once Was You

Download or read book All That Once Was You written by Thomas Griffin and published by . This book was released on 2018-07-06 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every day, we are repeating stories about our past experiences, our joys and sorrows, as if these are our selves. Every day, we are being told by social circumstances who-we-are. And these social forces try to sell us their notions and products as if we couldn't exist without this idea of our selves. From birth, our identity is distorted by this repetitive internal and external conditioning. "All That Once Was You" is a collection of poems that begins with an exploration of who we think or were taught is our self and guides the reader to a different understanding of self through subtly introspective poetic meditations on what it means to be human. With honest, vulnerable inquiry and through precisely crafted poems, we explore deeply profound questions about the nature of our existence. In poems that are deeply mindful, yet accessible; evocative and precise; simple and elegant, "All That Once Was You" invites the reader into deeper self-reflection, questioning and ultimately to inner wisdom. Filled with fresh observation and beauty, delicately nuanced music and urgency, these poems guide the reader to a new yet ancient understanding of purpose, dignity and humility, restoring us to a self that is loving. "So wonder with me/ now will you begin?"

Book excerpt: This collection is a series of meditations based on a short poem by William Carlos Williams. Beginning with the trope of sin and redemption implicit in the Williams lyric, these poems examine the nature of action, myth, and language. What does the Garden of Eden have to do with an icebox? How similar are deities and spouses? Can stealing plums lead to ultimate knowledge? This is just to say that saying isn't just. . .

Book excerpt: The poems in Lynn Xu's striking debut collection, Debts & Lessons, travel under the power of history's illusory engine and echo its ululations of love, violence, and lament. Named after the first part of Marcus Aurelius's Meditations, this book also finds its way across oceans and between languages, as the poet looks to the dead for guidance amid the abstractions of contemporary life. Xu pays her phantoms (and her readers) with the dream-currency of hallucinatory songs, which balance her finely-tuned ear against a world of awakenings.
