Book excerpt: If asked to list the greatest innovators of modern American poetry, few of us would think to include Jay-Z or Eminem in their number. And yet hip hop is the source of some of the most exciting developments in verse today. The media uproar in response to its controversial lyrical content has obscured hip hop's revolution of poetic craft and experience: Only in rap music can the beat of a song render poetic meter audible, allowing an MC's wordplay to move a club-full of eager listeners.Examining rap history's most memorable lyricists and their inimitable techniques, literary scholar Adam Bradley argues that we must understand rap as poetry or miss the vanguard of poetry today. Book of Rhymes explores America's least understood poets, unpacking their surprisingly complex craft, and according rap poetry the respect it deserves.

Book The Facts of Life in the Ghetto R B G Edition Volume 1 My Thoughts in Rhyme

Download or read book The Facts of Life in the Ghetto R B G Edition Volume 1 My Thoughts in Rhyme written by Fly TY Unchained and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-08-10 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I come from a place where if you're not from around there you might not understand it. I see police on almost every block, stopping and frisking, harassing hardworking citizens etc... And in the midst of all this there is still a high rate of drugs and violent crime. To see the raw realities of life in certain poverty stricken or low wage communities is depressing to say the least. I decided to paint a vivid picture through rhyme of what I see and experience on an everyday basis. Millions of people in and out the ghetto can relate to these stories even if they don't reside there because they know someone who is going through some sort of trouble. The truth is ugly, it hurts, it breaks you down, but it's real and it wakes you up to the Facts of Life Living in the Ghetto.....

Book The Song Poet

Download or read book The Song Poet written by Kao Kalia Yang and published by Metropolitan Books. This book was released on 2016-05-10 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of The Latehomecomer, a powerful memoir of her father, a Hmong song poet who sacrificed his gift for his children's future in America In the Hmong tradition, the song poet recounts the story of his people, their history and tragedies, joys and losses; extemporizing or drawing on folk tales, he keeps the past alive, invokes the spirits and the homeland, and records courtships, births, weddings, and wishes. Following her award-winning book The Latehomecomer, Kao Kalia Yang now retells the life of her father Bee Yang, the song poet, a Hmong refugee in Minnesota, driven from the mountains of Laos by American's Secret War. Bee lost his father as a young boy and keenly felt his orphanhood. He would wander from one neighbor to the next, collecting the things they said to each other, whispering the words to himself at night until, one day, a song was born. Bee sings the life of his people through the war-torn jungle and a Thai refugee camp. But the songs fall away in the cold, bitter world of a Minneapolis housing project and on the factory floor until, with the death of Bee's mother, the songs leave him for good. But before they do, Bee, with his poetry, has polished a life of poverty for his children, burnished their grim reality so that they might shine. Written with the exquisite beauty for which Kao Kalia Yang is renowned, The Song Poet is a love story -- of a daughter for her father, a father for his children, a people for their land, their traditions, and all that they have lost.

Book excerpt: My humble thoughts about this book, if you would allow me. RAP POETRY, "the next level" is a bold, exciting, fun to read fiction book. Saying that, I must add that this book is based on my life, my deeds, my thoughts, and most of all, the experience life has given me; so to say it is all fiction would be very far from the truth. I can probably pinpoint a situation in my life for every poem in this book and I believe my readers will also be able to, but this is not my intention for writing this letter. Traditionally poetry has not been the most successful form of writing when it comes to a healthy income, at least this is what I have been told, hopefully I'm wrong and you the publisher will prove there is no truth in this theory. I think this book Rap poetry "the next level" can be a great success, it's a bold, exciting and fun book to read, but what is even more important is that it will appeal to both young and old, something that most poets have not been able to do, and if they have I personally haven't seen their work. I have read poetry throughout my life and I have enjoyed it, at least sometimes, but to be quite honest if I was a teenager and entered a book store and happened to pick up a book with poems it would not keep my interest for more than two minutes. I only make this comment because I myself went searching for poetry simply to get some idea of how youths today respond to, or more so, what appeals to youths today in poetry. Not only was I un-captivated by any present material but I could not find one young person that had any interest in poetry, maybe I did not search far enough, personally I think this is sad. Rap poetry "the next level" is a bold step, but I believe it is as it says, The Next Level in rap and it dares any one who reads it too make it their own. I could have gone to a studio, put music to my lyrics, make them into songs as I have been advised to do on more than one occasion and who knows, maybe it will turn out that this is what I should have done. You see my goal, my aim, is to prove that people of all ages still do contrary to popular belief can see the beauty in lyrics of a poem before it becomes a hit song, that they do have an imagination and some sort or vision. The truth of it is, a song, and even more so a good song is one where music complements good lyrics to create something beautiful, but unfortunately writers are straying away from good lyrics to simply good rhythms and beats. I guess to each his own. Thank you in advance for taking time to read my book and my comments.

Download or read book Rap Rhyme and Rhythm written by Paul Alfred Barton and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wordrider's This and That is a mixture of poems and song lyrics about a range of feelings. Words about love, broken hearts, things that might be silly, and abuse by husband, boyfriend, friend or family member. I try to convey feelings that might have you touching the sky, walking with a rain cloud overhead, or maybe shaking your head in wonderment. You might laugh, cry, or be left scratching your head. My hope is that my poems or songs will let someone know they aren't alone in what they have been through, and that tomorrow can be better. That faith will see you through. I give thanks to God for giving me these words to write. I dedicate this book to my mom, my family, my friends, and each and every person, who has helped me along the way, even the ones I don't know. I thank them, one and all, each one that took time to read my poems even though they might not have wanted to read them. Some people say some of my poems or songs lyrics are off the wall or too much about love. To this, I can only say: "The reason I write off the wall stuff is I play on the ceiling a lot." and "It may not be love but it is close enough to chocolate to taste good."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In search of a place to call home, thousands of Hmong families made the journey from the war-torn jungles of Laos to the overcrowded refugee camps of Thailand and onward to America. But lacking a written language of their own, the Hmong experience has been primarily recorded by others. Driven to tell her family’s story after her grandmother’s death, The Latehomecomer is Kao Kalia Yang’s tribute to the remarkable woman whose spirit held them all together. It is also an eloquent, firsthand account of a people who have worked hard to make their voices heard. Beginning in the 1970s, as the Hmong were being massacred for their collaboration with the United States during the Vietnam War, Yang recounts the harrowing story of her family’s captivity, the daring rescue undertaken by her father and uncles, and their narrow escape into Thailand where Yang was born in the Ban Vinai Refugee Camp. When she was six years old, Yang’s family immigrated to America, and she evocatively captures the challenges of adapting to a new place and a new language. Through her words, the dreams, wisdom, and traditions passed down from her grandmother and shared by an entire community have finally found a voice. Together with her sister, Kao Kalia Yang is the founder of a company dedicated to helping immigrants with writing, translating, and business services. A graduate of Carleton College and Columbia University, Yang has recently screened The Place Where We Were Born, a film documenting the experiences of Hmong American refugees. However, this work goes deeper in covering the pain and the joys of growing up in the hood through poetic song. It branches off from the normal path and creates a new path, a new world of creativity that stems from having experienced life at its lowest points, and life at its highest points. This can be seen in songs/poems such as the storytelling lost girl in 'Shattered Windows,' the love chasing 'Close 2 U,' the spiritually driven 'God Please Save Me,' or the relationship, good man promoting 'Comin' Home.' Each of the poems/songs in this work lives and breathe Hip Hop, and captures the essence of street poetry. This book epitomizes growing up Hip Hop, as it takes various topics, various struggles, genuine and ingenius rhyme patterns, and transform them into gems.
