Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is called The Gospel in Poems because many of the poems contain scripture and/or words taken from a scripture out of the Bible. All of our problems can be answered from a scripture or story in the Bible. The Bible is the oldest book on earth. All scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness. The poem aAlways Trya is for someone who thinks they cannot accomplish something. Even if you fail, get up and try again. After all, a quitter never wins, and a winner never quits. aBe Encourageda is for someone who feels like giving up. Most of the time the darkest hour is just before day. This book was certainly written with you in my mind and heart. I pray that everyone who reads these poems be strengthened, lifted and blessed by God!

Book Six Poems of Joseph Smith

Download or read book Six Poems of Joseph Smith written by Colin B. Douglas and published by Temple Hill Books. This book was released on 2015-03-05 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like the prophet Isaiah, Joseph Smith was a poet, and in Six Poems by Joseph Smith, author and poet Colin B. Douglas has selected and formatted six sections of the Doctrine and Covenants as poetry, for, in fact, these particular sections (93, 76, 88, 1, 133, and 121-22) are poetry. As he explains, "These selections from the Doctrine and Covenants are impressive poems, and to be fully understood they must be read as such. That is, they mean presentationally as well as discursively, by 'how they say' as well as by 'what they say.' Though their didactic purposes cannot be ignored, I do not propose a mere 'appreciation' of them as 'literature' in addition to those extraliterary values. The so-called 'literary' aspects of these works are essential aspects of the thought; they are among the means by which the works 'mean'; and to ignore them is to ignore a dimension of meaning, for Joseph Smith was a poet-prophet--a poet whose 'matter' was his revelatory experiences, and a prophet who articulated--constituted--his experiences through the process of poetic creation. In him, the functions of poet and prophet are inseparable." After each poem, Douglas goes on to provide penetrating analysis, some of the most insightful commentary ever written on the revelations of Joseph Smith, including observations on meaning, structure, voice, and presentation. In summary, he writes, "The 'poetic achievement' of Joseph Smith (in its totality, not only in these few texts) is the main current of nineteenth-century American literature, indeed of world literature, from its beginning to its imminent end. Although readers outside the faith have some excuse for not taking Joseph Smith seriously as a poet, the Latter-day Saints have none."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conversion Theory is the first-ever published poetry collection of Darius Simpson, award-winning spoken word artist, writer, and social justice activist. This book is a reflection of how Darius has come to experience the United States and its relation to direct action, culture, community, and creative work of African Americans. Since 2014, specifically the murder of Mike Brown and the rebellion that followed, there had been emphasis in media coverage on police brutality and the string of non-indictments which were never far behind. Conversion Theory highlights many of these injustices while intertwining simple truths of what it has always meant to be black in the U.S. With the use of personal stories, persona poems, and historical facts, Darius brings the ugly truths to light while encouraging us all to continue in our pursuit of "justice for all". In some imaginative and some literal ways each poem stands as a demand in exchange for the peace which is so often stipulated on black brown voices of dissent.
