Book Poetical Tragedies Classic Reprint

Download or read book Poetical Tragedies Classic Reprint written by Wilfred Campbell and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poetical Tragedies The four tragedies included in this volume are widely separated in their subject-matter. It is a far call from Arthur of the Round Table, of ancient Celtic Britain, to Daulac, of the French Canadas, and they each are seemingly separated from the fortunes of the great Pope Gregory; yet these plays are included in the one volume because they deal with those eternal problems of the human soul which all of the world's thinkers have had at heart. Two of the plays, "Mordred" and "Hildebrand," were written in 1893, and published in a small edition in 1895, while the others now appear for the first time in book form. The author makes no apology for the form of these plays. Like other writers, he has his own literary ideals, and with the great mass of the sane British peoples, believes that Shakespeare is still the great dramatic poet of the modern world. If these plays, in spite of their imperfections, receive a kindly welcome, the author will later publish another group of his historical dramas and comedies in a separate volume. A horse of a glorious lineage, Astarte-like born of the foam, Daily fed from Aurora's bright chalice, Brought straight from her own starry home. A steed mighty and grand in his movements, Untamable, bounding on high, Ever filling, with resonant neighings, The vault of the deep, azure sky. To heaven each genius his bowl lifts, And kindling his torch from the sky, On the back of this wonderful monster Is seated and borne up on high. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sublime Tragedy of the Lost Cause The story of the old soldier; whose silvery locks Were lovingly mingled with the golden hair Of a beautiful girl who was sleeping there On his battle-scarred breast. The great civil war of America - that heroic struggle of the southern people in defence of the Lost Cause, against the stupendous power of the North, wielded in support of the Federal Union - furnished many a tragic incident of sellsacrifice and noble devotion, worthy to be celebrated in song or woven into the fabric of romance; but there is no private history - of which I know anything as full of dramatic effects as the one I now propose to relate. Nor can I think of one more closely interwoven with those great events that have rendered this beautiful region historic events that transpired, my child, before your fair face had made the world brighter, or these golden curls had coiled themselves so closely around your grandfather's heart. Book Greek Tragedy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Greek Tragedy Classic Reprint written by J. T. Sheppard and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-13 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Tragedy His book does not pretend to be a summary of known facts relating to Greek Tragedy. Nor is it, except incidentally, an essay in critical apprecia tion. Its aim is to help modern readers to enjoy Greek plays. For that reason stress has been laid on ideas and conventions which are not likely to be at first sight obvious to an English reader. That is why more space is given to Aeschylus than to either of his successors. That is also the explanation of the brief allusion which is made to some of the greatest of Greek tragedies. The Oedipus Tyrannus, for instance, depends for its effect upon qualities which are apparent, even in translation, to all readers who care for poetry and drama. It may be added that this book will be of little use unless the reader will turn to the plays them selves, either in the original or at least in a translation. Finally, remarks which are made in regard to one play often apply with equal force to many others. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Firmilian: A "Spasmodic" Tragedy It is a common practice, now-a - days, for poets to appeal to the tender mercies of the public, by issuing prefaces in which they acknowledge, in as many words, the weakness and poverty of their verse. If the acknowledgment is sincere, how can they expect the public to show them any favor? If it is a mere hypocritical affec tation, it were better omitted. And the practice is unwise as it is absurd. What would we think of the manufacturer who should entreat us to buy his goods, because they were of an inferior kind, or of the tradesman who should deliber ately announce that his stock was of a poor quality? For my part, if I conscientiously be lieved that my poetry was not worthy of ad miration, I never would commit the impertinence of asking any one to read it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dido, Queen of Carthage: A Tragedy Thomas Nash was born at the small sea-port town of Leostoff, in Suffolk, probably about the year 1564. He was, as he himself informs us, descended from a family who were seated in Hertfordshire. He became a student of St. John's College, Cambridge, and took his Batchelor's degree in 15S5. We have assigned his birth to the year 1564, partly on the authority of a pamphlet, published in 1597, entitled The trimming of Thomas Nath, Gentle-man, by the high tituled Patron Don Richardo de Medico Campo, Barber Chirurgeon to Trinity College, in. Cambridge. This production states that he left College at seven years' standing, and before he had taken his Master's degree, about the year 1587; a statement, on the accuracy of which we may probably rely, with respect to such a fact as this, although proceeding from the pen of an adversary. Assuming, therefore, that Nash went to College at the age of sixteen, (about the usual time, ) his birth would, according to this authority, have been in the year above mentioned. From Cambridge, he proceeded to London. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
