Download or read book Cooling Time written by C.D. Wright and published by Copper Canyon Press. This book was released on 2012-12-11 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: C. D. Wright takes her title from a line of legal defense, peculiar to Texas courts, in which it is held that if a man kills before having had time “to cool” after receiving an injury or an insult he is not guilty of murder. Cooling Time is a new type of book, an unruly vigil that is an interconnected memoir-poem-essay about contemporary American poetry. Ever focused on possibilities, Wright demonstrates that “the search for models becomes a search for alternatives,” and thereby defines the terms by which poets can chart their own course. These are some of the things I have touched in my life that are forbidden: paintings behind velvet ropes, electric fencing, a vault in an office, gun in a drawer, my brother’s folding money, the poet’s anus, the black holes in his heart—where his life went out of him. Tell me, what is the long stretch of road for if not to sort out the reasons why we are here and why we do what we do, from why we are not in the other lane doing what others do. Poetry is like food remarked one of my first teachers, freeing me to dislike Rocky Mountain Oysters and Robert Lowell. The menu is vast, the list of things I don’t want in my mouth relatively short. C.D. Wright, author of nine books of poetry, teaches at Brown University. She lives in Providence, Rhode Island, with poet Forrest Gander.

Philip Dacey published many books of poetry in his lifetime. This posthumous collection of poems is his gift to poets and poetry readers, to his many friends and admirers. How fitting that the title of this book alludes to an act by the poet Walt Whitman, a small act of kindness fronting the large inevitabilities of fate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first ever modern edition of Bernard Barton’s selected verse, recovering an important and prolific figure from the Romantic era. Instantly recognisable to his contemporaries as ‘the Quaker poet’, Barton wrote nature and landscape poetry in a distinctive vein, as well as spanning strikingly diverse themes that engaged politics, society and religion. This selection encompasses all these tones and genres, providing freshly edited texts from the first printed sources, supplemented by textual apparatus, critical commentary and informative footnotes. The book also includes a selection of contextual material, including prefaces and reviews, as well as a selection of Barton’s lively epistolary correspondence. A substantial scholarly essay serves as the introduction, describing Barton’s life and career, as well as analysing his uniquely Quaker poetic identity in its full literary and historical context.

Download or read book Album Verses and Romantic Literary Culture written by Samantha Matthews and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-09-11 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Will you write in my album?' Many Romantic poets were asked this question by women who collected contributions in their manuscript books. Those who obliged included Byron, Scott, Wordsworth, and Lamb, but also Felicia Hemans, Amelia Opie, and Sara Coleridge. Album Verses and Romantic Literary Culture presents the first critical and cultural history of this forgotten phenomenon. It asks a series of questions. Where did 1820s 'albo-mania' come from, and why was it satirized as a women's 'mania'? What was the relation between visitors' books associated with great institutions and country houses, personal albums belonging to individuals, and the poetry written in both? What caused albums' re-gendering from earlier friendship books kept by male students and gentlemen on the Grand Tour to a 'feminized' practice identified mainly with young women? When albums were central to women's culture, why were so many published album poems by men? How did amateur and professional poets engage differently with albums? What does album culture's privileging of 'original poetry' have to say about attitudes towards creativity and poetic practice in the age of print? This volume recovers a distinctive subgenre of occasional poetry composed to be read in manuscript, with its own characteristic formal features, conventions, themes, and cultural significance. Unique albums examined include that kept at the Grande Chartreuse, those owned by Regency socialite Lady Sarah Jersey, and those kept by Lake poets' daughters. As Album Verses and Romantic Literary Culture shows, album poetry reflects changing attitudes to identity, gender, class, politics, poetry, family dynamics, and social relations in the Romantic period.
Download or read book A Verse Vigil and Selected Poems written by Kathryn Ann Hill and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-09-26 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Vigil of Easter is an ancient service of the Church that recounts God's promises and acts of mercy to His people in 12 lessons from the Old Testament. These readings point to the fulfillment of God's promises in the sacrificial death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the incarnate Son of God. In Part 1 of "A Verse Vigil and Selected Poems," the author begins with the oldest known list of lessons for the Easter Vigil, recasting each narrative in alliterative verse. The Testing of Abraham, Israel Crosses the Red Sea, and The Valley of Dry Bones are among the Bible stories presented. The 12 lessons plus two alliterative canticles climax in a verse rendering of Chrysostom's Paschal Homily, a joyous proclamation of Christ's victorious resurrection. Part 2 of the book contains shorter metrical poems, most of which spring from lessons for Sundays or other feasts in the church year. Several of these poems may be sung as hymns. An alliterative rendering of St. Patrick's Breastplate concludes the book.
Download or read book Vigil written by Dudgrick Bevins and published by bd-studios.com. This book was released on 2021-07-16 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vigil is an eloquent and elegant story in poems, told from the afterlife by dead teenagers who were victims of a school shooting. Like Edgar Lee Masters’s Spoon River Anthology, Bevins’s poems give voice to the souls who can no longer speak for themselves. The afterlife for this bunch of teenagers, as it turns out, is full of gossip and idle chatter, not unlike the school halls they wandered in life. Even from the beyond, they have the same wishes, fears, hopes, and dreams as those they left behind. Vigil is a poetic condemnation of the gun violence that plagues the United States, but it is also a celebration of life.
