Book excerpt: "Poetic Reality-in a complicated world," is a book of poems unlike most. The title explains the overall understanding. This book is about real life issues, written into poems. It also covers several other topics, and has several meanings. The most important meaning contained within the book is the understanding of "self importance." We are faced with many adversities in our lives, and for the most part these adversities can cloud our understanding of who we truly are. Often times we "give in" to these conditions and find ourselves in a state of depression, whether it be major depression, or minor. "Poetic Reality- in a complicated world," allows the reader to understand the several emotions, or feelings they may experience while attempting to cope with these trying times, and even though these "gray" times are present in our lives, they don't have to completely consume one's existence. Better days will follow, as long as we can be "real" to ourselves and keep in mind how important we truly are to ourselves. This book will assist the reader in understanding that we "all" experience adversity at one time or another. It is truly up to us to figure out how to deal with these times. The poems in this book are from emotional experiences author Samuel Davis Jr., has experienced in his life, as well as shared feelings from his family and friends. "Poetic Reality" is about real life, as we continue our learning from life's lessons, through trial and error.

Book excerpt: This is American history they don’t teach you in class: Discover the “fascinating, funny” stories of the states that never were, from Texlahoma to West Florida (The New Yorker) Everyone knows the fifty nifty united states—but what about the hundreds of other statehood proposals that never came to pass? Lost States is a tribute to such great unrealized dreams as West Florida, Texlahoma, Montezuma, Rough and Ready, and Yazoo. Some of these states came remarkably close to joining the Union. Others never had a chance. Many are still trying. Consider: Frontier legend Daniel Boone once proposed a state of Transylvania in the Appalachian wilderness. His plan was resurrected a few years later with the new name of Kentucky. Residents of bucolic South Jersey wanted to secede from their urban north Jersey neighbors and form the fifty-first state. The Gold Rush territory of Nataqua could have made a fine state—but since no women were willing to live there, the settlers gave up and joined California. Each story offers a fascinating glimpse at the nation we might have become—along with plenty of absurd characters, bureaucratic red tape, and political gamesmanship. Accompanying these tales are beautifully rendered maps detailing the proposed state boundaries, plus images of real-life artifacts and ephemera. Welcome to the world of Lost States!

Book excerpt: Anthology. The Greek origins of the word gesture at a bouquet, a garland; “a flower-logic, a petal-theory, a blossom-word.” In Stone-Garland, Dan Beachy-Quick brings the term back to its roots, linking together the lives and words of six singular ancient Greeks. Simonides: honest servant to patrons. Anacreon: lustful singer, living on in the work of his acolytes. Archilochus: cruel critic, beloved of the Muses. Alcman: who took birds as his teachers. Theognis: chronicler of human excellence and vice. Callimachus: cosmopolitan head librarian at Alexandria. These are the poets who appear in these pages, sometimes in fragments, sometimes in sustained glimpses. Drawing inspiration from the Greek Anthology, first drafted in the first century BC, Beachy-Quick presents translations filled with lovers and children, gods and insects, earth and water, ideas and ideals. Throughout, the line between the ancient and the contemporary blurs, and “the logic of how life should be lived decays wondrously into the more difficult possibilities of what life is.” Spare, earthy, lovely, Stone-Garland offers readers of the Seedbank series its lyric blossoms and subtle weave, a walk through a cemetery that is also a garden.

Book Journey in the Mind s Eye of a Poet

Download or read book Journey in the Mind s Eye of a Poet written by Tony Prewit and published by . This book was released on 2012-05-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The six books in this series are (in order): Journal of Time, Portals and Passages, The Book of the Lost and Found or Chasing Rainbows, Moods of War, The Source, and Another Day. Book Two, Portals and Passages, represents the author's exploration of his inner self relative to the seen and unseen worlds. You might say this series of poems is like a place between heaven and earth and between the body and the spirit. Dreams play an important role in this writing, as well as the voices heard in the dreams, and as such are catalysts for its energy and mystery. In some ways this book is the author's accounting of the "secret life" we all live through the discovery of his most private thoughts, observations, and beliefs, and seeks to come to terms with the confluence of that world and the "normal" external world. Should one's covert life remain that way or should the honesty be shared in words? "As time passes and I become a more experienced traveler, only time will tell," says Prewit, "and as there are no absolute conclusions, I know there is more change and more unknown ahead."

Download or read book Moods of War written by Tony Prewit and published by . This book was released on 2012-06-01 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The six books in this series are (in order): Journal of Time, Portals and Passages, The Book of the Lost and Found or Chasing Rainbows, Moods of War, The Source, and Another Day. Book Four in the 6-book series Journey in the Mind's Eye of a Poet: A Search for Faith, Moods of War, reflects the author's encounter with what he calls "conflicts in faith," in which he experienced an unexpected spiritual dilemma as he saw within us all a natural and strong insistence in our belief that God only approves of a "one and only one way" to reach Him. Book Four seeks to find a way out of the "moods of war" within and to find a just means to respond to others who seek to speak or act against differing beliefs in God. Accessing answers to questions like, "Is the real evidence of our closeness to God based upon how we treat and respect one another, rather than a particular way to approach God?" or "Is it better to lay the foundation of intolerance upon humanitarian oppression rather than upon disapproval of another's belief?" may not be easy due to the many obstacles along the way, but venturing on the path to knowledge is surely better than insisting that there is only one way to God.

Book Journey in the Mind s Eye of a Poet

Download or read book Journey in the Mind s Eye of a Poet written by Tony Prewit and published by . This book was released on 2012-06-01 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Book Five in the 6-book series Journey in the Mind's Eye of a Poet: A Search for Faith, The Source, is the manifestation of the author's gradual realization that he was well on his way to building a faith of his own based on a willingness to make decisions and choices about his beliefs about God and his relationship to Him. In this process, Prewit saw himself standing on the crest of a mountain looking out over the landscape, where its crest represented the reward of his inner struggle and the accomplishment of having given himself permission to believe in God the way he wanted-and then having the will to live that new way of life. Building a faith of his own showed him the reality of the fallibility of all religions and spiritual beliefs, and the fear and denial these beliefs can cause. It was only when facing the fact that all beliefs-even his own-had faults that he began to find the peace he sought. Surprisingly, it was not the fact of any theology's failings that had caused him concern, but the inability to admit to their existence. Now he accepts that all spiritual beliefs have failings and that what we do not know of God may never be revealed, and to this day believes that how we come to this place in life matters little, but rather what is in our heart, mind, and spirit, and how it is projected into the world.
