Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every day she comes and stands, turning slowing, counterclockwise, in the parking lot. She holds in her arms a bundle of infants clothes. She is praying, calling for her departed child to return to the nest of her body. In A Strange Catechism, Justen Ahren relates the story of a mother and her surviving son, as they journey through grief, lose and separation to a deeper understanding of how life is constructed out of what our fingers keep making in the air/ until dawn those fleeting things we long for, made real by our longing and our praying for them. The poems in Justen Ahrens Strange Catechism are songs whose music exists to make beauty out of profound sadness. They are rhythmic, empathic, and polyphonic but behind each one is a voice who says hello to darkness and then sings to itall the while wondering about golondrinas and the hydrangeas blue clouds, all the while wondering if the world without [him]/may be the real one. --Jennifer Tseng This collection contains the voice of a poet whose work aches with beauty. The poems are characterized by the paradox of austerity as abundance and religious mystery as lucidity. In Justen Ahrens search for grace we find poetry of excellence. --Jennifer Clement

Book excerpt: Literary Nonfiction. Poetry. LGBT Studies. "CATECHISM: A LOVE STORY is a gorgeous collection of poetic essays on reading, loving, and, most delightfully, reading love between the lines. Julie Marie Wade's prose refuses tradition and convention, the expected beginnings and endings, preferring instead to investigate the gray unknowns of ritual and sacrament in life, reading, and love. She writes, 'Now the pages are scribbled with the Possible.' Hers is a daring and true way to not only write but to live." Jenny Boully"

Book The Hollywood Catechism

Download or read book The Hollywood Catechism written by Paul Fericano and published by . This book was released on 2015-03-20 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In "The Hollywood Catechism, " his latest collection of poems, Paul Fericano shines a bright searchlight on our addiction to pop culture, our fixation on celebrity worship, and our suspicion of religious ideas. Each poem is a small lens flipped to reveal an alternate universe into which the reader enters bravely with no exit sign in sight. Fericano's unique perspective is marked by a skill and talent that blends socio-political satire with suffering and sentiment. In the process, he manages to acknowledge our shenanigans and celebrate our humanity. Elizabeth Taylor, Jesus, and Joe DiMaggio join hands with Freud, The Three Stooges, and Ann Landers, as Burt Lancaster, Charles Bukowski, and Johnny Unitas break bread with Wallace Stevens, Dean Martin, and Dinah Shore. And as U2's Bono and Tyrone Power's Zorro haunt each other's dreams, the Marx Brothers discuss opera with Oprah. From the wickedly satirical "Sinatra, Sinatra" and its use of the crooner's name in vain, to the irreverent appeal of "The Actor's Creed," "The Halle Berry" and "Prayer of the Talking Head," Fericano's lampoons are equally deft. The book's empathetic "Howl of Lon Chaney, Jr." is not only a luminous parody of Allen Ginsberg's epic poem "Howl," but a stunning work that stands on its own merits. American/British poet and critic, Robert Peake, captured it best when he wrote: "Paul's poetry is a distinct turn of mind-able to sweep up humor, irony, and deep feeling in a winning trifecta. It is precisely in the moment I am laughing in a Paul Fericano poem that my guard is down. It is then when Paul slips in a modicum of pathos, reminding me of how complex it is to be human, how, as Virginia Woolf puts it in Mrs. Dalloway, 'dangerous it is to live even just one day.' These are poems that read like the messages in a bottle that might be written by the last sane man on Earth, when everyone else has gone mad."

Book The Complete English Poems

Download or read book The Complete English Poems written by George Herbert and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2004-10-07 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Herbert combined the intellectual and the spiritual, the humble and the divine, to create some of the most moving devotional poetry in the English language. His deceptively simple verse uses the ingenious arguments typical of seventeenth-century 'metaphysical' poets, and unusual imagery drawn from musical structures, the natural world and domestic activity to explore a mosaic of Biblical themes. From the wit and wordplay of 'The Pulley' and the formal experimentation of 'Easter Wings' and 'Paradise', to the intense, highly personal relationship between man and God portrayed in 'The Collar' and 'Redemption', the works collected here show the transcendental power of divine love.

Book Compendium of the Traditional Catechism of the Catholic Church

Download or read book Compendium of the Traditional Catechism of the Catholic Church written by Roniel Aledo and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2013-09 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Catechism of the Catholic Church is the "sure norm for teaching the faith" (Apostolic Constitution Fidei Depositum ). Still the language and wording of both the Catechism and the Second Vatican Council is one full of poetic beauty and soft diplomacy. This style of poetry and diplomacy is not the most appropriate for clarity. In many places the language results hard to understand and multiple contradictory interpretations are possible due precisely to the language full of charity but not of clarity. The purpose of the "Compendium of the Traditional Catechism of the Catholic Church" is to provide absolute clarity about the Faith of All times and less room for open interpretations and ambiguity. The world today in order to keep the Faith of All times needs more than poetic words. It needs clear teachings with full power, strength, and clarity above: no room for misinterpretations, no wiggle room for heretical interpretations at all. That is the purpose of this work: high clarity above all. With total clarity several subjects are covered: the definition of schismatic, the Limbo, Freemasons, heretic, the so called "marriage" among homosexuals, the doctrine of the Church regarding the liberal freemasonic Democracy, the responsibility that Catholics must have when voting or taking action on the political field, the so called "New Atheists" movement, the Consecration of Russia according to Our Lady of Fatima, the future of the world according to the City of God of St. Agustin, etc. All of these subjects of today and many others are addressed in this work with extreme and total clarity. Here there is no room for error and no room for misunderstanding. This is the Traditional Catechism that is really needed in the Year of the Faith and in any year!
