This book was released on 2016-06-09 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three men served the eighteen U.S. Presidents of the 20th Century from William McKinley through William Clinton. The first of these men worked for six presidents (McKinley, T. Roosevelt, Taft, Wilson, Harding and Coolidge). His son replaced him and worked for the next six presidents (Hoover, F. Roosevelt, Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy and Johnson). His grandson then worked for the last six presidents of the 20th Century (Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, and Clinton). Three generations lived through the century and while serving the presidents in background roles collected poems and songs written to or by the presidents. These different poetic forms cover successes and failures and recount tragedies and simple pleasures. Combined with paintings by Bruce Johnston, the poems bring life to the presidents which led the country.

Download or read book The Ohio Presidents written by Quentin R. Skrabec, Jr. and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2018-08-21 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ohio sent eight presidents to the White House--one Whig and seven Republicans--from 1841 to 1923: William Harrison, U.S. Grant, Rutherford Hayes, James Garfield, Benjamin Harrison, William McKinley, William Taft and Warren Harding. Collectively their social policies and beliefs formed a unified philosophy and legacy. Ohio republicanism--an alliance of Christianity, populism, nationalism, industrialism and conservative economics--dominated politics across America from 1860 to 1930. Initially several factions in search of a party, it morphed from the anti-slavery Whig Party of Abraham Lincoln and swallowed up a group of single-issue parties, including the Abolition and Free Soil parties, under a national banner. The ghost of Ohio republicanism can still be seen today.

Book Poems on Ohio Classic Reprint

Download or read book Poems on Ohio Classic Reprint written by Clement L. Martzolff and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poems on Ohio Back In Old Ohio. Pardon, stranger, did you say you're from Ohio? Shake. Born there, was you? Well, I guess we're 'bout of the same make, An' I'm mighty glad to see you, stranger, for the sake Of the love I bear to old Ohio. What is that? You're from the hills? Well, shake again, by Jo! From the hills along the river, where the buckeyes grow, I hain't been there, I guess, since twenty years ago, But my heart is full of old Ohio. Down the river! Fished there many a summer afternoon, Sat and dreamed there, too, on many a balmy night in June, Lookin' o'er the water where I see the risin' moon Smilin' white across the old Ohio. Twenty years a schemin' in among the crowds of men! Twenty years! I've seen a heap of this world since then, But tonight I'd kind o' like to wander back agin, Back among the hills of old Ohio. Sweetest times are the old times, like them we used to know! Sweetest scenes an' sweetest dreams are them of long ago; When we sat upon the banks and listened to the flow Of the waves along the old Ohio. Still her spell is on me, an' her music's in my ears, Still her beauty shines to me, although it be through tears, Still my heart goes back to her across the gap of years, Back unto the scenes of old Ohio. Book Demagogue for President

Download or read book Demagogue for President written by Jennifer Mercieca and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2020-07-07 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner, Bronze, 2020 Foreword Indies, Political and Social Sciences Winner, 2021 PROSE Award for Government & Politics "Deserves a place alongside George Orwell’s 'Politics and the English Language'. . . . one of the most important political books of this perilous summer."—The Washington Post "A must-read"—Salon "Highly recommended"—Jack Shafer, Politico Featured in "The Best New Books to Read This Summer" and "Lit Hub's Most Anticipated Books of 2020"—Literary Hub Historic levels of polarization, a disaffected and frustrated electorate, and widespread distrust of government, the news media, and traditional political leadership set the stage in 2016 for an unexpected, unlikely, and unprecedented presidential contest. Donald Trump’s campaign speeches and other rhetoric seemed on the surface to be simplistic, repetitive, and disorganized to many. As Demagogue for President shows, Trump’s campaign strategy was anything but simple. Political communication expert Jennifer Mercieca shows how the Trump campaign expertly used the common rhetorical techniques of a demagogue, a word with two contradictory definitions—“a leader who makes use of popular prejudices and false claims and promises in order to gain power” or “a leader championing the cause of the common people in ancient times” (Merriam-Webster, 2019). These strategies, in conjunction with post-rhetorical public relations techniques, were meant to appeal to a segment of an already distrustful electorate. It was an effective tactic. Mercieca analyzes rhetorical strategies such as argument ad hominem, argument ad baculum, argument ad populum, reification, paralipsis, and more to reveal a campaign that was morally repugnant to some but to others a brilliant appeal to American exceptionalism. By all accounts, it fundamentally changed the discourse of the American public sphere.
