Book Poems of Home and Country Classic Reprint

Download or read book Poems of Home and Country Classic Reprint written by James A. Martling and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poems of Home and Country In compiling a complete collection of the poems of James A. Martling, it has seemed best to include some written in college days, and at a still earlier period, which, I am confident, the author neither valued nor intended to republish; but they have not been excluded from this volume, - first, because of his early friends, by whom they were prized, and also for the reason that so many want to see what a poet wrote in his youthful days. Two or three of his later poems were unfinished, yet were too good to leave out. Some of his published poems have been pronounced "Modern Classics;" and the manner in which London Bridge has been received, - the grateful messages which have reached us from cultured critics like the following: - "How delightfully he sang! And with what moral uplift in his singing he occasionally smites some great note forth from the harpstrings. "'Turbulent our passions roll, Separating soul from soul.' "That is the storm-voice from the seas! "'But the common bond will break, If the strong forsake the weak.' "The old, old plaint from weary centuried time." Book Return to my Native Land

Download or read book Return to my Native Land written by Aime Cesaire and published by Archipelago. This book was released on 2014-06-03 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A work of immense cultural significance and beauty, this long poem became an anthem for the African diaspora and the birth of the Negritude movement. With unusual juxtapositions of object and metaphor, a bouquet of language-play, and deeply resonant rhythms, Césaire considered this work a "break into the forbidden," at once a cry of rebellion and a celebration of black identity. More praise: "The greatest living poet in the French language."--American Book Review "Martinique poet Aime Cesaire is one of the few pure surrealists alive today. By this I mean that his work has never compromised its wild universe of double meanings, stretched syntax, and unexpected imagery. This long poem was written at the end of World War II and became an anthem for many blacks around the world. Eshleman and Smith have revised their original 1983 translations and given it additional power by presenting Cesaire's unique voice as testament to a world reduced in size by catastrophic events." --Bloomsbury Review "Through his universal call for the respect of human dignity, consciousness and responsibility, he will remain a symbol of hope for all oppressed peoples." --Nicolas Sarkozy "Evocative and thoughtful, touching on human aspiration far beyond the scale of its specific concerns with Cesaire's native land - Martinique." --The Times

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Home and Country By an older civilization than our own upon the susceptible nature of an artist; I am but stating Well known facts; but I think we are onlyjust beginning to be sensible of the deplorable lack of sympathy between our European-bred artists and the average American. Not all that even France can now offer to a young art student from the United States, not all that all Europe can offer him, compensates for the loss of the national quality, which, in works of art, means more than sentiment, more than personal allegiance to the ag, more than the national consciousness that we. Book A Series of Original Poems on Love Home and the Southland Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Series of Original Poems on Love Home and the Southland Classic Reprint written by Robert Paine Hudson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-04-15 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Series of Original Poems on Love, Home, and the Southland These poems, mainly lyrics on love, home and the Southland, were composed for the most part during the author's early life, when and wherever occasion permitted, but seldom with any thought of publication. They were in most instances letters to friends and loved ones, setting forth his experiences in life, at the same time his love for the beautiful. Not one was written to order nor for pay, nor was one ever sold in manuscript. They are lyrics of the heart rather than of the head, and the author does not claim for them any great erudition. The great majority was written when he was but sixteen to twenty-one years old. He wrote verses as early as fourteen, but those are not in cluded in this volume. In January, 1880, the author published a volume of poems under the title of Roving Footsteps, selling copies with his own hands. In July, 1887, he published another volume entitled Songs of the Cum hetlands. Then he bade his Muse farewell, and for twenty years wrote scarcely a line, going out of poesy to engage in other vocations. Book Autumn Leaves from an Eastern Maple

Download or read book Autumn Leaves from an Eastern Maple written by Mrs. Lucina Moon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Autumn Leaves From an Eastern Maple: A Collection of Songs and Verses for the Home Folks All nature on that morning woke rejoicing, For how could we poor mortals fail to see The emblem of pure lives writ out before us, So plainly it was meant for you and me; A robe of charity spread oe'r our failings, A blessing from His hands we all may know That, scarred by sin, unworthy all by nature, We may at last be cleansed as white as snow. I wonder if the children in the homeland And they who now have grown to manhood's prime Who year by year this wondrous magic ponder Have learned its lesson in the winter time. Here where so seldom come beauteous snow storms, A blessing follows as they come and go. 0 may we all soon learn full well the lesson So kindly given in the spotless snow. And when with' earth the sky itself seems blending As 'round us eddy snowflakes in the air, They'll be to us a type of joy unending, The bliss and purity we'll have up there. And though so soon their forms shall melt and vanish, Their beauty trodden in the grime below, Yet in our thoughts their lesson sweet we'll cherish And ask that He may make us white as snow. Book Poems Songs and Sonnets Classic Reprint

Download or read book Poems Songs and Sonnets Classic Reprint written by H C Stuart Professor Emeritus Robert Reid and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining a devout love for his homeland and a fierce dedication to the Celtic lilt and dialect, Robert Reid (Rob Wanlock) hypnotizes audiences with his vivid descriptions of the heathers and moors of Scotland in his seminal work, Poems, Songs, and Sonnets. Compared to his contemporaries, Andrew Lang and Austin Dobson, Reid demonstrated and effusiveness and restraint that beautifully colored his faraway home in the eyes of modern readers. For Reid, Scotland is more than a place, it is a "Proud Mother" of her sundry heroic suns, and her very lands are poetry, "each moor a memory, and each stream a song!." For today's readers, one of the most striking elements of Poems, Songs, and Sonnets is the thick dialect in many of the works, pulsing with the rhythm of the prose and offering new poetic insights around every corner. Some of the phrases can be complicated, but using context is a great way to interpret the stanzas, and learn a little Gaelic in the process! For those of Scottish descent this book is particularly interesting, although it will surely resonate with anyone interested in Scottish heritage, Celtic language, romantic poetry, or the style and form of poetry. The intensely detailed descriptions, the heart-warming cries of nationalism and patriotism, and the irrepressible Scottish humor which rings throughout the works all give the reader a sense of being transported in time to a place where the air is more crisp, the sun is sharper, and the call of gray glen sounds for miles. Readers are urged to try this forgotten treasure and re-discover one of the great Scottish poets, you won't regret it!
