Book excerpt: "These poems break all the rules my patient teachers taught me. For the last five and a half years I have written one "thimble" poem each morning. They are ragged children who sing off key in simple words. They were not written with an audience in mind, but now my friends have encouraged me to collect a few. In this grouping are poems of search and question, which reach with great longing toward an unknowable God. They contradict one another and are rough on the morally certain. They stretch for Cosmic Belonging with laughter and imagined Grace." --Author's acknowledgement page.

Book Prayers of a Heretic

Download or read book Prayers of a Heretic written by Yermiyahu Ahron Taub and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prayers of a Heretic explores the "crime" of heresy and the condition of existential displacement through the language of prayer and prayerful voice/s. In the first section, "Visits and Visitations," the poet imagines a variety of protoganists in situations of supplication. The second section, "In the Gleaning," examines the life, trangressions, and prayers of the title character and the primacy of books, libraries, and reading for refuge and reconfiguration. Eschewing a secular/religious divide, the book offers an expansive interpretation of the enduring power of prayer. Four poems also have a Yiddish version. ------ Taub is a master of the character study. His poems are crowded with portraits, novels in miniature, of the old, the overlooked, the dispossessed. Here you will find Aunt Milkah Pesl, taciturn and unsentimental, the volunteer in assisted living who reads books in Yiddish, the patient in an MRI scanner listening to "a symphony of terror" like "John Zorn on Quaaludes." There are the regulars in a library, and the treasures found hidden in the pages of old books. There are lonely men in search of "fleshly glory." And over-arching all, there are repentance and atonement, constantly remade anew. --Kim Roberts, author of Pearl Poetry Prize-winning Animal Magnetism This book is a feast: sensuous, ironic, political, hilarious, poignant and wise. Intimately Jewish yet embracing of all, its cast of characters includes aged professors, flirtatious landladies, poem-peddlers and the Pied Piper. In "Credo," a stunning poem near the book's end, Taub powerfully defines religion on his own terms, with equal measures of awe, horror and gratitude at the world. --Ruth L. Schwartz, author of Edgewater Whether he's writing in English or Yiddish, in poetry or prayer, Yermiyahu Ahron Taub has a firm grasp on the language of the heart. His characters, men (including one named Yermiyahu) and women whose only crimes are that they are human, are as familiar as our own reflections. In Taub's skilled and attentive hands, no judgments are passed; heresy is in the eye of the beholder. --Gregg Shapiro, author of GREGG SHAPIRO: 77 and Protection

Book Prayer Book for the New Heretic

Download or read book Prayer Book for the New Heretic written by Colin Pope and published by . This book was released on 2023-03-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the intersection of religion, politics, and Americana, Colin Pope's latest collection inquires what it means to believe while living through unbelievable times. These poems careen and rollick, imagining a world in which conspiracy theory and urban myth figure as acts of God. Here, the notion of "blind faith" is subjected to kaleidoscopic interrogation in a madcap, whirling, unabashedly entertaining pursuit of the limits of dogma. In Pope's vision of belief, wayward children are plucked up by eagles, the moon landing is faked via the liberal use of shaving cream, and a men's room wall is elected president. But beneath their roiling surface, these poems surge on their dauntless quest for some understanding of how we ended up here, now, fighting for our humanity. "In Colin Pope's virtuosic Prayer Book for the New Heretic, the world-at-large is, by turns, a crucible, a brimming wonderland, and 'god's tiled laboratory.' Pope impresses time and again with long-lined, densely packed poems that snap, crackle, and pop with encyclopedic richness, allusiveness, wit, and topicality. In addition, he dazzles the reader with phenomenal imagery and startling juxtapositions: 'The college of cardinals / later confirmed the lord's aborted plans, as well as the secret deletion / of mermaids, centaurs, dinosaurs...' Grappling with moral and political tumult, this questing poet crafts a cascade of cogent prayers and paradoxical homilies--with provocative, tantalizing titles like 'Test Prayer When You Suspect the Devil Is Masquerading As God,' 'Test Prayer When You Discover Your Guardian Angel Is Incompetent,' and 'Prayer for the Sturdiness of the Desks Under Which Our Children Are Instructed to Hide During Nuclear Holocaust.' Prayer Book for the New Heretic is the rare new volume of poetry that feels absolutely pertinent, consistently on fire, and truly visionary."--Cyrus Cassells, 2021 Texas Poet Laureate and author of The World That the Shooter Left Us "These intelligent, funny, despairing, and observant poems may be written for heretics, but they work just as well for the devout. Devotions of the deeply human kind, they refuse to look away from that gap in the sky where someone or something has been said to preside. Though a Wright brother avows in one of the poems that 'No bird soars in a calm,' this book is a bird itself, and it rises on every breath of joy and trouble."--Lisa Lewis, winner of the National Poetry Series Poetry.

Download or read book Dust and Prayers written by Charles L. Bartow and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dust and Prayers offers an evocation of love, human and divine, and of the struggles of believers and unbelievers. It depicts something of the human condition apart from God and, through praise and lament, with humor and pathos it speaks of the divine remedy. It speaks of creation, too, and of the Creator, and of humanity (created in God's image), as dust and spirit. Its voice at times is free of the constraints of rigorous poetic forms. At other times its voice is set free by adherence to them. Its cry is biblical: Lord, "I believe; help my unbelief" (Mark 9:24)! It references the Psalms, the Prophets, the Gospels, the Apostle Paul's letters, and strains to come to terms with God's Holy Presence felt as Holy Absence in, with, under-and in front of-the text. Its hope is grounded in the blessed disturbance with which the Christ, attested in Holy Scripture, proffers the "blessed assurance" that we are his.

At the beginning, the winsome Fool sets out on a journey, eager for adventure. The tone changes as she faces accusation and inquisition, losing the thread of her own story. In the last third of the book, she sets off again, this time determined to live on her own terms, choosing the identity of heretic rather than clipping her wings to fit into patriarchal and religious institutional boxes. These poems are full of reverence and rage, trauma and hope, resilience and fierce love.

Book Poetry and Its Others

Download or read book Poetry and Its Others written by Jahan Ramazani and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is poetry? Often it is understood as a largely self-enclosed verbal system—“suspended from any mutual interaction with alien discourse,” in the words of Mikhail Bakhtin. But in Poetry and Its Others, Jahan Ramazani reveals modern and contemporary poetry’s animated dialogue with other genres and discourses. Poetry generates rich new possibilities, he argues, by absorbing and contending with its near verbal relatives. Exploring poetry’s vibrant exchanges with other forms of writing, Ramazani shows how poetry assimilates features of prose fiction but differentiates itself from novelistic realism; metabolizes aspects of theory and philosophy but refuses their abstract procedures; and recognizes itself in the verbal precision of the law even as it separates itself from the law’s rationalism. But poetry’s most frequent interlocutors, he demonstrates, are news, prayer, and song. Poets such as William Carlos Williams and W. H. Auden refashioned poetry to absorb the news while expanding its contexts; T. S. Eliot and Charles Wright drew on the intimacy of prayer though resisting its limits; and Paul Muldoon, Rae Armantrout, and Patience Agbabi have played with and against song lyrics and techniques. Encompassing a cultural and stylistic range of writing unsurpassed by other studies of poetry, Poetry and Its Others shows that we understand what poetry is by examining its interplay with what it is not.

Book Poems and Carols Oxford Bodleian Library MS Douce 302

Download or read book Poems and Carols Oxford Bodleian Library MS Douce 302 written by John the Blind Audelay and published by Medieval Institute Publications. This book was released on 2009-10-01 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Audelay's idiosyncratic devotional tastes, interesting personal life history, and declared political affiliations-loyalty to king, upholder of estates, anxiety over heresy-make him worthy of careful study beside his better-known contemporaries. Of particular note: MS Douce 302 preserves Audelay's own alliterative Marcolf and Solomon, a poem thought to be descended from Langland's Piers Plowman. The Audelay Manuscript also contains unique copies of other alliterative poems of the ornate style seen in Gawain and the Green Knight and The Pistel of Swete Susan. These pieces are Paternoster and Three Dead Kings, both set at the end of the book. Whether or not they are Audelay's own compositions, they seem certain to be his own selections. Audelay also displays a persistent habit of sequencing materials in generic and devotionally affective ways. His is a pious sensibility delicately honed by reverence for the liturgy and by an awe of God. That Audelay's poetry can awaken us to new poetic sensitivities in medieval devotional verse is reason enough to bring him into the ambit of canonical fifteenth-century English poets.

Download or read book Sheltering Mercy written by Ryan Whitaker Smith and published by Brazos Press. This book was released on 2022-02-08 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christianity Today 2023 Book Award Finalist (Bible & Devotional) Sheltering Mercy helps us rediscover the rich treasures of the Psalms--through free-verse prayer renderings of their poems and hymns--as a guide to personal devotion and meditation. The church has always used the Psalms as part of its prayer life, and they have inspired countless other prayers. This book contains 75 prayers drawn from Psalms 1-75, providing lyrical sketches of what authors Ryan Whitaker Smith and Dan Wilt have seen, heard, and felt while sojourning in the Psalms. While each prayer corresponds to a particular psalm and touches on its themes and ideas, it is not a new translation of the Psalms or an attempt to modernize or contextualize their content or language. Rather, the prayers are responses to the Psalms written in harmony with Scripture. These prayers help us quiet our hearts before God and welcome us into a safe place amid the storms of life. This artful, poetic, and classic devotional book features compelling custom illustrations and beautiful hardcover binding, offering a fresh way to reflect on and pray the Psalms.
