Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poems From the Press: Patriotic, Descriptive, Sentimental and Humorous Although a thought or a sentiment might very often be better expressed in prose than verse, still it is not so likely to catch and rivet the attention of a casual reader, and many quotations now Familiar in our mouth as household words, would probably never have attained their present popularity had they been embodied in a speech or newspaper paragraph. As many of the poems in this volume have been read and met the approval of various people in high positions, well qualified to judge, I think no apology is needed for offering them to the general public, although the material may not have the culture or polish of the high-class magazine. Book Patriotism in Three Cantos And Other Poems Classic Reprint

Download or read book Patriotism in Three Cantos And Other Poems Classic Reprint written by George Richardson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Patriotism in Three Cantos; And Other Poems Following the above, appeared Hours in the Bowers, by the persecuted and veteran poet and annalist, Samuel Bamford, a many poems of which are probably unequalled by any modern writer for original conception and fresh vigorous sentiment. His volume of miscellaneous compositions manifest also a strong and laudable tone of sympathy for the prostrate poor, exhibited in language not extreme, but with a moderate and salutary feeling of patriotic truth. Subsequently, Rhyme, Romance and Revery, and A Voice from the Town, by the talented John Bolton Rogerson, have succeeded, with felicitous and universally admired pieces in prose and verse, the former abounding with rare ideal fancy - the romance of chivalry, &c. Certainly, in invention, very fertile, novel, and imaginative, and deserve to occupy a place in the first line for compositions of this class the latter displays an exquisite and tender feeling - sweetly and touchingly sensitive of domestic affection. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War-Time Echoes: Patriotic Poems, Heroic and Pathetic, Humorous and Dialectic, of the Spanish-American War And yet, in their happiest flights of description, the orator and the historian may not hope to equal in vividness and beauty the verbal pictures the poets have drawn for us. In this volume, which is a companion to Martial Recitations, every phase of the short, sharp struggle is represented by its best poem. The wreck of the Maine, the farewell, the camp, the field, the trench, the charge, the sea-fight, the hospital, the soldier's burial, the angels of the Red Cross, the brave wives and mothers, the crowning victory, the soldier's return and his welcome home, - all these the poets have painted for us in words that fairly sparkle, and glow and burn. The interest of the present volume springs, of course, from the selections themselves; and praise, if any is due, belongs to the poets herein represented, rather than to the compiler. Borrowing a beautiful figure from Montaigne, he may say, - I have culled the flowers and furnished the thread that binds them together; but their beauty and fragrance is their own. This volume, then, cannot fail in interest for every patriot. In the hope that it may receive as warm a welcome as that accorded to Martial Recitations, and that it may foster a deeper love for our country whose past is so glorious and whose future is so promising, this book is sent forth upon its mission. Book Blazing Stars Like Flaming Darts

Download or read book Blazing Stars Like Flaming Darts written by Roy E Peterson and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2022-07-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Blazing Stars Like Flaming Darts" achieves two milestones: This is my 77th book of poetry and 100th book of various genre. There are one hundred (100) classical poems of love and romance, wit and wisdom, humor and comedy, advice and dissent, patriotism, social criticism, inspiration, history, and mystery. When this book is published, it means I will have published more than 5,000 poems, which by my count is 5,010. One does not put that much effort and years of time into writing poetry unless one has an innate love and passion for the depth of meaning, hidden thoughts waiting to be discerned by others, and hunger for recognition in the poetic annals. Though I wrote a few poems over the years along with some music, I only began focusing on poetry as an outlet for heartfelt sentiment and soul searching philosophical and religious discoveries nine years ago. Until then I had military, diplomatic, foreign service, international trade and university teaching careers in succession. Forty-five (48) of my poems have been published by the prestigious Society of Classical Poets of which I am a member. You may read them all by going to their website, clicking on the Member button, clicking on my name in blue and it will take you there. An additional twenty (20) were published under the Ukraine invasion invitation for poetry and five (5) for a St. Patrick's Day invitation to post poems. You will find that I prefer to write as I teach - in a folksy style that is me talking to you. Examples of my personal development in the continual desire to improve my poetic presentations serve to amplify the points I wish to make while doing so in a style that is neither stilted, nor ostentatious. My primary desire is to communicate with each of you with clarity and without ambiguous ramblings. My disdain for modern poetry without rhyme or disciplined presentations is equal to my distaste for modern art that is amorphous. Neither speak to my heart and soul. Afterall, isn't that what we are seeking?
