Download or read book Coming Back Home written by N. Thomas Johnson-Medland and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you have never been inside of a prison, there are things you will not know about the community there. You may guess at them, but that is not the same. What it feels like. What it sounds like. What goes on there; these all define portions of what it is. These definitions, or parameters of life inside, come to you quite viscerally. You feel them in and through your skin before you actually give word or shape to understanding them. You sense before you think. The themes that come from a prison poet are varied. Most poems you would not have to know the poet was a prisoner to gain access to the import of the word-pictures. Human experience, while diverse, shares some common archetypal qualities. But, some will grow in meaning knowing where the poems were planted. I think themes about being captive are universal, but when you know the poet is in a prison, it can open you to listen differently. Is that a good thing? I don't know. But it is true.

Book excerpt: Daniel Berrigan was born in 1921 in the United States and is known world wide as a poet and peace activist. Ordained a Jesuit priest in 1952 he was deeply engaged in the anti-Vietnam War movement, together with his brother Philip and the famed Trappist monk Thomas Merton. Following Philip's arrest and imprisonment for non-violent protest, Berrigan increased the scale of his own non-violent protest. In 1968 he was sentenced to three years in prison for destroying draft files and after a period on the run was arrested and imprisoned until 1972. In the early 1980s he was one of six activists who formed the Plowshares Movement to protest against nuclear armaments, and he has since been outspoken in his opposition to the 1991 Gulf War, the US invasion of Afghanistan and the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Among his many publications are some ten volumes of poetry. Berrigan's poems, according to Soujourners Magazine "have long been recognized for their spiritual beauty. Kurt Vonnegut once called him 'Jesus as a poet, ' and added, 'If this be heresy, make the most of it.'" Tulips in the Prison Yard was first published by Dedalus Press in 1992.

During that time he wrote poems, at first to pass the time and then later in exchange for cigarettes, stamps, and other items his fellow inmates would offer as barter or trade for a few inspirational words set to the page. The poems the author penned while in prison form the basis for Huginn and Muninn; a collection of poems that explore many of life's major themes including politics, religion, God, love, heartbreak, and even the battle of good versus evil. These impassioned poems are written from the unique perspective of a man who with his body imprisoned, found the inspiration to free his creative soul.

Book The Complete Poems of John Donne

Download or read book The Complete Poems of John Donne written by Robin Robbins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-06 with total page 1024 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Poems of John Donne is one volume paperback edition of the poems of John Donne (1572-1631) based on a comprehensive re-evaluation of his work from composition to circulation and reception. Donne’s output is tremendously varied in style and form and demonstrates his ability to exercise his rhetorical capabilities according to context and occasion. This edition aims to present the text of all his known poems, from the epigrams, songs and satires written for fellow young men about town, to the more mature verse-epistles and memorial elegies written for his patrons. The Longman Annotated English Poets series traditionally aims to present poems in chronological order; in this edition, however, the principle has been observed only within generic sections. This organisation reproduces the manner in which Donne’s original readers first encountered the poems in the various manuscripts of his elegies and satires that circulated in Donne’s lifetime. Volume One contains the Epigrams, Verse Letters to Friends, Love Lyrics, Love Elegies and Satires; Volume Two contains the religious poems, Wedding Celebrations, Verse Epistles to Patronesses, Commemorations, and the Anniversaries. The lyrics have been arranged alphabetically for ease of reference and because, in all but a few cases, precise date of composition is impossible to determine. Each poem has extensive editorial commentary designed to put the twenty-first century reader in possession of all that is necessary fully to appreciate Donne’s work. A substantial headnote sets each poem in its historical and literary context, while the annotations give detailed guidance on the wealth of classical and religious allusions and give full representation to the literary, historical and philosophical culture out of which the poems grew. In keeping with the traditions of the series, Donne’s own text has been modernised in punctuation and spelling except where to do so would alter or disrupt a rhyme.

Book The Kingis Quair and Other Prison Poems

Download or read book The Kingis Quair and Other Prison Poems written by Mary-Jo Arn and published by Medieval Institute Publications. This book was released on 2005-05-01 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Readers have noticed that the fifteenth century saw a remarkable flourishing of poems written in conditions of physical captivity or on the subject of imprisonment. The largest body of this poetry is from the pen of Charles of Valois, duke of Orleans, who was captured by the English at the battle of Agincourt in 1415 and not released until 1440. The longest single poem on the subject is James I of Scotland's The Kingis Quair, purportedly written at the time of his release from an eighteen-year imprisonment in England .This volume reflects the wide scope of these prison poems by bringing together a new edition of The Kingis Quair, a selection from Charles d'Orleans' Fortunes Stabilnes, a poem by George Ashby, who was imprisoned in London's Fleet prison, and the poems of two other poets, both anonymous, who wrote about physical and/or emotional imprisonment.
