Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FOREST ECOLOGY Authoritative resource covering traditional plant ecology topics and contemporary components such as climate change, invasive species, ecosystem services, and more Forest Ecology provides comprehensive coverage of the field, focusing on traditional plant ecology topics of tree structure and growth, regeneration, effects of light and temperature on tree physiology, forest communities, succession, and diversity. The work also reviews abiotic factors of light, temperature, physiography (landforms and topography), soil, and disturbance (especially fire), and provides coverage of ecosystem-level topics including carbon storage and balance, nutrient cycling, and forest ecosystem productivity. The 5th edition of Forest Ecology retains the readability and accessibility of the previous editions and includes important additional topical material that has surfaced in the field. All topics are approached with a landscape ecosystem or geo-ecological view, which places biota (organisms and communities) in context as integral parts of whole ecosystems that also include air (atmosphere and climate), topography, soil, and water. As such, the book fills a niche utilized by no other forest ecology text on the market, helping students and researchers consider whole ecosystems at multiple scales. Sample topics covered in Forest Ecology include: Contemporary components of forest ecology, including climate change, invasive species, diversity, ecological forestry, landscape ecology, and ecosystem services. Characteristics of physiography important for forest ecosystems, including its effects on microclimate, disturbance, soil, and vegetation. Genetic diversity of woody plants and genecological differentiation of tree species, including the importance of hybridization, polyploidy, and epigenetics. Site quality estimation using tree height and ground flora, and multiple-factor approaches to forest site and ecosystem classification and mapping. Forest Ecology is a highly accessible text for students, but it also serves as an excellent reference for academics. In addition, practitioners of forest ecology can also harness the information within to gain better insight into the field for practical application of concepts.

Book The Mosaic Cycle Concept of Ecosystems

Download or read book The Mosaic Cycle Concept of Ecosystems written by Hermann Remmert and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first international congress for ecology took place in 1974 in The Hague, its central theme being "Unifying Concepts in Ecology". In the forefront of discussion at that time were questions of constancy, stability and resilience. Such questions have gone slightly out of fashion and the exceptionally precise and well thought-out concepts of that era are seldom applied nowadays. The present book introduces another unifying concept, the concept of the ecological cycle, or, more precisely, the mosaic-cycle concept of ecology. The following chapters have their origin in lectures which were held and discussed at a symposium of the Werner Reimers Stiftung in Bad Homburg. The purpose of the symposium was the preparation of this book. Our warmest thanks go to the Reimers Stiftung for their assistance and hospitality. We should also like to express our gratitude to all participants, to those who contributed to the discussion, and above all to those colleagues whose lectures provided, from a variety of aspects, a critical approach to the mosaic-cycle concept. Book Animals Influence on the Landscape and Ecological Importance

Download or read book Animals Influence on the Landscape and Ecological Importance written by Friedrich-Karl Holtmeier and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-10-22 with total page 547 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In its first English-language edition, this book introduces the many-faceted interactions of animal populations with their habitats. From soil fauna, ants and termites to small and large herbivores, burrowing mammals and birds, the author presents a comprehensive analysis of animals and ecosystems that is as broad and varied as all nature. Chapter 2 addresses the functional role of animals in landscape ecosystems, emphasizing fluxes of energy and matter within and between ecosystems, and the effects of animals on qualitative and structural habitat change. Discussion includes chapters on the role of animal population density and the impacts of native herbivores on vegetation and habitats from the tropics to the polar regions. Cyclic mass outbreaks of species such as the larch bud moth in Switzerland, the mountain pine beetle and the African red-billed weaver bird are described and analyzed. Other chapters discuss Zoochory – the dispersal of seeds by ants, mammals and birds – and the influence of burrowing animals on soil development and geomorphology. Consideration extends to the impact of feral domestic animals. Chapter 5 focuses on problems resulting from introduction of alien animals and from re-introduction of animal species to their original habitats, discusses the effects on ecosystems of burrowing, digging and trampling by animals. The author also addresses keystone species such as kangaroo rats, termites and beavers. Chapter 6 addresses the role of animals in landscape management and nature conservation, with chapters on the impact of newcomer species such as animals introduced into Australia, New Zealand and Europe, and the consequences of reintroduction of species to original habitat. It also discusses the carrying capacity of natural habit, public attitudes toward conversation and more. The final section ponders the effects of climate on interactions between animals and their habitats.

Book Pocket Gopher Food Habits on Two Disturbed Forest Sites in Central Arizona

Download or read book Pocket Gopher Food Habits on Two Disturbed Forest Sites in Central Arizona written by Gerald J. Gottfried and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stomach analysis of pocket gophers (Thomomys bottae) indicated that on one area succulent grasses were the main food item, supplying between 84% and 44 % of the average composite diet. Bromegrasses (Bromus spp.) were highly preferred. Thistle (Cirsium spp.) was the main forb eaten. The second area supported a forb-grass-brush cover after the forest had been removed. Forbs comprised about 70% of the herbaceous cover, and supplied 51% of the diet; grasses and sedges (Carex spp.) averaged 25% of the diet. Fleabane (Erigeron spp. and common sunflower (Helianthus annus) were the main forbs in the diet. Wood material, including ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) was not used heavily throughout the period, although use did increase slightly during the winter. Insects were between 8% and 19% of the average diet.

Book Reforestation Trials and Secondary Succession with Three Levels of Overstory Shade in the Grand Fir Mosaic Ecosystem

Download or read book Reforestation Trials and Secondary Succession with Three Levels of Overstory Shade in the Grand Fir Mosaic Ecosystem written by Dennis E. Ferguson and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grand Fir Mosaic habitats are difficult to regenerate because of pocket gophers (Thomomys talpoides) and successional plant communities dominated by bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinum) and western coneflower (Rudbeckia occidentalis). This study tested reforestation practices recommended by previous research, tested hypotheses about the effects of overstory shade on regeneration success, and documented secondary succession. Natural regeneration is not a reliable reforestation method on Grand Fir Mosaic sites. Clearcut and planting was the best regeneration method if pocket gophers are controlled. Partial cutting and planting was the best regeneration method if pocket gophers were not controlled. Most gopher-caused seedling mortality occurred the first summer, first winter, and second winter after planting. The clearcut treatment resulted in the loss of shrub species and the dominance of bracken fern and/or western coneflower. In the partial cut treatment, shrubs were retained and there was less bracken fern and/or western coneflower than in the clearcut treatment.
