Book Flowering Plants Monocots

Download or read book Flowering Plants Monocots written by Elizabeth A. Kellogg and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-05-18 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the outcome of a modern phylogenetic analysis of the grass family based on multiple sources of data, in particular molecular systematic studies resulting from a concerted effort by researchers worldwide, including the author. In the classification given here grasses are subdivided into 12 subfamilies with 29 tribes and over 700 genera. The keys and descriptions for the taxa above the rank of genus are hierarchical, i.e. they concentrate upon characters which are deemed to be synapomorphic for the lineages and may be applicable only to their early-diverging taxa. Beyond the treatment of phylogeny and formal taxonomy, the author presents a wide range of information on topics such as the structural characters of grasses, their related functional aspects and particularly corresponding findings from the field of developmental genetics with inclusion of genes and gene products instrumental in the shaping of morphological traits (in which this volume appears unique within this book series); further topics addressed include the contentious time of origin of the family, the emigration of the originally shade-loving grasses out of the forest to form vast grasslands accompanied by the switch of many members to C4 photosynthesis, the impact of herbivores on the silica cycle housed in the grass phytoliths, the reproductive biology of grasses, the domestication of major cereal crops and the affinities of grasses within the newly circumscribed order Poales. This volume provides a comprehensive overview of existing knowledge on the Poaceae (Gramineae), with major implications in terms of key scientific challenges awaiting future research. It certainly will be of interest both for the grass specialist and also the generalist seeking state-of-the-art information on the diversity of grasses, the most ecologically and economically important of the families of flowering plants.

Book Revision of Poa L Poaceae Pooideae Poeae Poinae in Mexico new records re evaluation of P ruprechtii and two new species P palmeri and P wendtii

Download or read book Revision of Poa L Poaceae Pooideae Poeae Poinae in Mexico new records re evaluation of P ruprechtii and two new species P palmeri and P wendtii written by Robert John Soreng and published by PenSoft Publishers LTD. This book was released on 2012-08-06 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who knew there were so many bluegrasses in Mexico?ÿ This monographic study of the Mexican species of the large (500+ species), taxonomically complex, world-wide genus Poa, by Smithsonian researchers Robert J. Soreng and Paulÿ M. Peterson, revealed there were 23, including 2 new to science, and 2 previously unknown there.ÿ Two other narrow endemics were described only in the last 10 years. The Mexican species occur mainly in the mountains, and especially in the alpine.ÿ Most of the species occurrences in Mexico presumably reflect establishment during cooler climates of past glacial cycles. Today, several are living on the edge of extinction. Eleven natives are globally rare, or rare in Mexico. Breeding system diversity is high: asexual seed production is obligate in several and facultative in some others, one is dioecious, and some are gynomonoecious, several are perfect-flowered.ÿ At least 3 arrived by long-distance-dispersal from South America?s Andes; 2 aided by asexual reproduction, 1 by the capacity to self-fertilize.

Book Flora of North America Volume 25 Magnoliophyta Commelinidae in part Poaceae part 2

Download or read book Flora of North America Volume 25 Magnoliophyta Commelinidae in part Poaceae part 2 written by Flora of North America Editorial Committee, and published by OUP USA. This book was released on 2003 with total page 824 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 25 of Flora North America is one of two volumes on grasses to be published in this series. Together they will provide a comprehensive, authoritative, illustrated account of this important group of plants. Most of the species treated are either native to North America north of Mexico or are introduced species that are now established in the region, but there are many that do not fit into these categories. Among the additional species are several that the USDA has identified as major weed threats; and others that are known only as cultivated plants, some being cultivated for their ornamental value, others as sources for human food or animal forage. For instance, volume 25 includes such ecologically important species as Big and Little Bluestem, economically important species of Sorghum and Corn, ornamental species such as Job's Tears and Hakonechloa, and noxious weeds such as Itchgrass. The volume includes identification keys, descriptions, line drawings, and ecological characteristics for each of the species; distribution maps for the native and established species; and a list of the synonyms currently in use for the accepted names. The treatments, each of which has been extensively reviewed, are based on a combination of original observations and critical review of the literature.

Book Vascular System of the Male and Female Florets of Raddia Brasiliensis Poaceae Bambusoideae Olyreae

Download or read book Vascular System of the Male and Female Florets of Raddia Brasiliensis Poaceae Bambusoideae Olyreae written by Thompson Demetrio Pizzolato and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The components of the vascular systems in the male floret and the female floret of Raddia are described from reconstructed serial, transverse sections. Squat tracheary elements, sieve elements, and intermediary cells comprise the systems. The male floret has six and the female floret three collateral bundles in the rachilla at the floret base that become interconnected into a lower sieve-element plexus with accompanying tracheary elements. Besides contributing to the lower plexus, the rachilla bundles serve as the traces for the lemma and palea. That bundle (bundle 3) which is the trace for the lemma median contributes most of the sieve and tracheary elements to the lower plexus. Supernumerary bundles are associated with bundle 3. Rising in the rachilla from the lower plexus is the upper plexus of sieve and tracheary elements. The circular form of the upper plexus of the male floret is influenced by the two traces from each of the anterior lodicules and by each trace from the three stamens. The trace from the posterior lodicule of the male and female florets does not influence the upper plexus. The bi-arcuate form of the upper plexus of the female floret is influenced by the two, more posterior traces from the anterior lodicules. The three staminodia in the female floret do not influence the upper plexus because they are avascular. At the pistil base is a massive amphicribral bundle, the pistil plexus, that sends down vascular prongs and lobes to merge with the upper and lower plexi. Two posterolateral (stylar) collateral bundles merge with the pistil plexus in a gynobasic manner. A placental bundle ascends from the posterior of the pistil plexus, merges with the chalaza, and exceeds the tip of the ovule before ending in a stylar core. Components of the floret vascular system of Raddia confirm the Olyreae as a tribe of the Bambusoideae that should not be placed in the subfamilies Festucoideae, Oryzoideae, or Panicoideae.

Book The Genera of Bambusoideae Poaceae of the American Continent

Download or read book The Genera of Bambusoideae Poaceae of the American Continent written by Cleofé E. Calderón and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of the grass subfamily Bambusoideae is reviewed and nomenclatural problems of subfamilial and tribal level are explored. Characters are presented to distinguish the subfamily from all other grasses and differentiating features of the two major groups of bamboosherbaceous and woodyare included. Keys are given for the tribes and genera of herbaceous American bamboos and genera of woody American bamboos, the latter based principally on vegetative characters. A conspectus of the subfamily also appears, with a list of all 37 genera recognized in the American continent, each with nomenclatural and taxonomic notes. Comments on the morphology of the bamboo plant and the systematic value of some characters, especially vegetative, are given in the introduction.
