Book excerpt: "Outside of Merigold, Mississippi, off an unmarked dirt road, stands Po' Monkey's, perhaps the most famous house in Mississippi and the last rural juke joint in the state, now closed to the public. Before the death of the lounge's owner, Willie Seaberry, in 2016, it was a mandatory stop on the constant blues pilgrimage that flows through the Delta. Willie Seaberry ran Po' Monkey's Lounge for more than fifty years, opening his juke joint in the 1960s. A hand-built tenant home located on the plantation where Seaberry worked, Po' Monkey's was a place to listen to music and drink beer--a place to relax where everyone was welcomed by the infectious charm of Willie Seaberry. In Po' Monkey's: Portrait of a Juke Joint, photographer Will Jacks captures the juke joint he spent a decade patronizing. The more than seventy black and white photographs featured in this volume reflect ten years of weekly visits to the lounge as a regular--a journal of his encounters with other customers, tourists, and Willie Seaberry himself. An essay by award-winning writer Boyce Upholt on the cultural significance of the lounge accompanies the images. This volume explores the difficulties of preservation, historical context, community relations, and cultural tourism. Now that Seaberry is gone, the uncertainty of the future of his juke joint highlights the need for a historical record."--Provided by publisher.

Download or read book The Guenons Diversity and Adaptation in African Monkeys written by Mary E. Glenn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-11 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been twelve years since a work relating to the long-tailed African monkeys known as the guenons has been published and fifteen years have passed since the last major scientific symposium was held that was solely dedicated to current research on members of this monkey group living in the wild. Since that time, new guenon species and subspecies have been discovered, previously unstudied guenon species have become the subject of long-term research projects, and knowledge of the more well-known guenon species has greatly increased. This volume presents novel information and keen insight on research previously studied and newly discovered. A wide range of topics related to guenon biology is presented, including evolution, taxonomy, biogeography, reproductive physiology, social and positional behavior, ecology, and conservation. Composed of 26 chapters compiled by 47 authors, many of whom are young investigators in their field, The Guenons: Diversity and Adaptation in African Monkeys provides a valuable resource for researchers and scientists in the fields of anthropology, primatology, zoology, and conservation biology.

Download or read book The Basal Ganglia III written by Giorgio Bernardi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 749 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents the collected papers presented at the Third Triennial Symposium of the International Basal Ganglia society (IBAGS) held at Capo Boi, Italy, June 10-13, 1989. About 300 members of the society and participants attended the symposium which was held in a delightful environment conducive to the formal and informal exchange of scientific thought. The interdisciplinary nature of the symposium was unique in its coverage of the neurosciences from molecular biology to clinical and behavioural studies. The 80 papers collected here reflect the wide spectrum and the depth of studies on virtually all aspects of the basal ganglia. Unfortunately, this book does not capture the cordial and congenial atmosphere which has characterized this, and all prior symposia of the Society. Any cooperative endeavour of this kind requires a tremendous effort and dedication, usually by a small number of individuals. The Society is especially pleased to acknowledge the support and encouragement of the "Italian Ministry of university and Scientific Research" and the "Italian National. Research Council". In addition the society received financial support from numerous Foundations and corporations, which are listed separately under acknowledgements. Finally the Editors are pleased that Plenum Press, which has published the two previous symposia, has accepted this program for publication. It is our hope that vast scientific efforts reflected in these pages will be widely disseminated and further encourage every kind of research related to the basal ganglia.
