This book was released on 2016-07-23 with total page 571 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its establishment in 1976, PME (The International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education) is serving as a much sought after venue for scientific debate among those at the cutting edge of the field, as well as an engine for the development of research in mathematics education. A wide range of research activities conducted over the last ten years by PME members and their colleagues are documented and critically reviewed in this handbook, released to celebrate the Group’s 40 year anniversary milestone. The book is divided into four main sections: Cognitive aspects of learning and teaching content areas; Cognitive aspects of learning and teaching transverse areas; Social aspects of learning and teaching mathematics; and Professional aspects of teaching mathematics. The selection for each chapter of a team of at least two authors, mostly located in different parts of the world, ensured effective coverage of each field. High quality was further enhanced by the scrupulous review of early chapter drafts by two leaders in the relevant field. The resulting volume with its compilation of the most relevant aspects of research in the field, and its emphasis on trends and future developments, will be a rich and welcome resource for both mature and emerging researchers in mathematics education.

Book Reconsidering American Civil Military Relations

Download or read book Reconsidering American Civil Military Relations written by Lionel Beehner and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-02 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores contemporary civil-military relations in the United States. Much of the canonical literature on civil-military relations was either written during or references the Cold War, while other major research focuses on the post-Cold War era, or the first decade of the twenty-first century. A great deal has changed since then. This book considers the implications for civil-military relations of many of these changes. Specifically, it focuses on factors such as breakdowns in democratic and civil-military norms and conventions; intensifying partisanship and deepening political divisions in American society; as well as new technology and the evolving character of armed conflict. Chapters are organized around the principal actors in civil-military relations, and the book includes sections on the military, civilian leadership, and the public. It explores the roles and obligations of each. The book also examines how changes in contemporary armed conflict influence civil-military relations. Chapters in this section examine the cyber domain, grey zone operations, asymmetric warfare and emerging technology. The book thus brings the study of civil-military relations into the contemporary era, in which new geopolitical realities and the changing character of armed conflict combine with domestic political tensions to test, if not potentially redefine, those relations.

Book Problem Solving in Mathematics Instruction and Teacher Professional Development

Download or read book Problem Solving in Mathematics Instruction and Teacher Professional Development written by Patricio Felmer and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-22 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent research in problem solving has shifted its focus to actual classroom implementation and what is really going on during problem solving when it is used regularly in classroom. This book seeks to stay on top of that trend by approaching diverse aspects of current problem solving research, covering three broad themes. Firstly, it explores the role of teachers in problem-solving classrooms and their professional development, moving onto—secondly—the role of students when solving problems, with particular consideration of factors like group work, discussion, role of students in discussions and the effect of students’ engagement on their self-perception and their view of mathematics. Finally, the book considers the question of problem solving in mathematics instruction as it overlaps with problem design, problem-solving situations, and actual classroom implementation. The volume brings together diverse contributors from a variety of countries and with wide and varied experiences, combining the voices of leading and developing researchers. The book will be of interest to any reader keeping on the frontiers of research in problem solving, more specifically researchers and graduate students in mathematics education, researchers in problem solving, as well as teachers and practitioners.

Book Volume 1 Research Syntheses

Download or read book Volume 1 Research Syntheses written by M. Kathleen Heid and published by IAP. This book was released on 2008-07-01 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to NCTM’s Principles and Standards for School mathematics, "Technology is essential in teaching and learning of mathematics; it influences the mathematics that is taught and it enhances students’ learning.” How does research inform this clarion call for technology in mathematics teaching and learning? In response to the need to craft appropriate roles for technology in school mathematics new technological approaches have been applied to the teaching and learning of mathematics, and these approaches have been examined by researchers world-wide. The first volume provides insight into what research suggests about the nature of mathematics learning in technological environments. Included in this volume are syntheses of research on technology in the learning of rational number, algebra, elementary and secondary geometry, mathematical modeling, and calculus. Additional chapters synthesize research on technology in the practice of teaching and on equity issues in the use of technology in mathematics instruction. Instead of simply reporting achievement scores of students who use technology in their learning, authors provide thoughtful analyses of bodies of research with the goal of understanding the ways in which technology affects what and how students learn. Each of the chapters in this volume is written by a team of experts whose own research has provided important guidance to the field.

Book Asset Management and Institutional Investors

Download or read book Asset Management and Institutional Investors written by Ignazio Basile and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses investment management policies for institutional investors. It is composed of four parts. The first one analyses the various types of institutional investors, institutions which, with different objectives, professionally manage portfolios of financial and real assets on behalf of a wide variety of individuals. This part goes on with an in-depth analysis of the economic, technical and regulatory characteristics of the different types of investment funds and of other types of asset management products, which have a high rate of substitutability with investment funds and represent their natural competitors. The second part of the book identifies and investigates the stages of the investment portfolio management. Given the importance of strategic asset allocation in explaining the ex post performance of any type of investment portfolio, this part provides an in-depth analysis of asset allocation methods, illustrating the different theoretical and operational solutions available to institutional investors. The third part describes performance assessment, its breakdown and risk control, with an in-depth examination of performance evaluation techniques, returns-based style analysis approaches, and performance attribution models. Finally, the fourth part deals with the subject of diversification into alternative asset classes, identifying the common characteristics and their possible role within the framework of investment management policies. This part analyses hedge funds, private equity, real estate, commodities, and currency overlay techniques.

Download or read book Depression written by Steven Richards and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2002-03-12 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The idea of a highly accessible resource on depression is a good one. . . It fills an important gap in the literature and represents a very helpful addition to the library of clinicians-expert and non-expert alike—who could benefit from an accessible, up-to-date primer (or refresher) in the formulation, diagnosis, and treatment of depression." -Stephen Swallow, Ph.D., Private Practice, Oakville, Ontario "While there have been lengthy handbooks and a variety of specialized books, I do not think anyone has had quite this idea of writing a primer. It combines research and practice in a very interesting manner. . . The up-to-date research is one of the major strengths. The authors clearly know their material and are conversant with the major findings of the field. . . It reflects a masterful knowledge of the current literature and communicates it very well." -Ed Beckham, PH.D., Clinical Psychologist, Psychiatric Associates, Inc. Every health care provider and mental health professional will encounter clients struggling with depression, yet many of these professionals don′t receive a thorough grounding on theory, research, and clinical guidelines regarding depression, and those who do sometimes have trouble keeping abreast of the literature (a literature that includes over 60,000 empirical publications since 1980!). This book provides a handy reference for such practitioners. This brief, practical guide provides an introduction or refresher on depression that is research-based yet accessible, practical, and easy to read and consult.
