Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Plymouth Scrap Book: The Oldest Original Documents Extant in Plymouth Archives, Printed Verbatim, Some Reproduced Hardly a more interesting and varied collection of literary miscellany exists than that preserved by an unknown recorder of deeds in The Plymouth Scrap Book. In this collection have been preserved the odds and ends of the original Plymouth Colony records remaining after many years of neglect, indifference and abuse had reduced the valued archives, to a tattered and fragmentary remainder. The date of the collection itself is unknown: the dates of the documents themselves are between 1636 and 1693. They therefore embrace the formative period of the Colony, beginning some sixteen years after its foundation. What is here presented is a verbatim transcript of the original Scrap Book, itself well known to antiquarians. As distinguished from "The Records of Plymouth Colony," published by the State of Massachusetts in 1855, there is offered here a modern transcript of the only original records now extant and pertaining to the lives and times of those commonly credited with the entire credit for the foundation of "New England." Its place in the great mass of literature concerning the early colonial life of North America, therefore, is that of a practical replica, valuable to students of history and genealogy as a ready reference and a means of abridging the tremendously difficult task of deciphering the characteristic but obscure chirography of the "Puritans." To those interested in early colonial life and customs, the Scrap Book affords a fund of useful lore. Finally, in the rough and ready attempts at formulating the more vital transactions of pioneer life may be traced, the growing need for a new dominion in civil, as well as in religious affairs. Thus in a remote way, these same documents faintly echo the commencement of the transition from "separatism" to that still more complete independence of the democracy that was to be established by a succeeding generation. This transcript, with plated reproductions of some of the originals, is published posthumously, manuscript and photographs having been in the hands of the printer at the time of the compiler's death. The book had been planned as an instructive and more or less popular feature in connection with the proposed tercentenary celebration of the landing of the Pilgrims. The Historical Sketch and Review of Bradford's History are, therefore, explained. They are included in perpetuation of the original plan and in the belief that their strong controversial flavor adds to the value of the collection through perpetuating the argumentative atmosphere that surrounds all antiquarian lore. Book excerpt: FIRST TO CARE: 125 YEARS OF THE ORDER OF ST JOHN IN NEW ZEALAND, 1885-2010 brings to life the history of one of our most ubiquitous and vital charitable organisations. The heavily illustrated book provides a vivid account of public-spiritedness, enterprise and innovation by people involved in St John over the past 125 years, peppered with occasional disputes and setbacks along the way. St John invented and popularised 'first aid' as we know it. It provided medical assistance from the sidelines of our sports fields from as early as 1891 and it played a leading role in disaster relief from its formative days. From humble beginnings it established a nationwide ambulance service that today is the envy of the St John fraternity worldwide.

Book The Provincial

Download or read book The Provincial written by Hendrik Booraem and published by Bucknell University Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Provincial traces Calvin Coolidge's life from his thirteenth birthday until his graduation from Amherst College ten years later. It is a story of a shy young man from the country who gradually acquires an education and goes on to higher and higher levels of learning, but in Coolidge's case that progress was very much against his will. He grew up in the remote farming hamlet of Plymouth Notch, Vermont, eleven miles from the nearest railroad; his stern, thrifty father made money selling insurance and maple sugar, holding local offices, and renting property. Coolidge looked forward to someday keeping the general store his father owned, only a hundred feet from his house, and passing his life in this isolated, close-knit community, among people he knew and liked. This book shows how his intelligence, his love of reading, and his father's ambitions for him pushed him unwillingly farther and farther away. First he was sent to the local academy, eleven miles away, to study Latin and Greek. Then, on the enthusiastic recommendation of his high school principal, he went on to Amherst College in Massachusetts. On his first attempt to enter he became physically sick and had to return home. The following year he tried again, and this time he stayed, but he was desperately unhappy the first two years and asked his father in vain to be allowed to come home." "In the end, however, Amherst turned out to be a success story for him. Overlooked for the first two years by the sleek metropolitan young men who set the tone for the student body, shut out of fraternities and social life because of his shyness and country ways, he finally impressed his classmates with his dry sarcasm in debate, his ready wit, his unshakable poise and self-control. At the same time, he himself was changed and broadened. Under the influence of great Amherst professors like Charles E. Garman and Anson D. Morse, he became sure of himself and well read in history, philosophy, and political science. Even so, as he graduated to the acclaim of his classmates, he still yearned to go home to Plymouth Notch and settle there. The Provincial ends with Coolidge's graduation; a brief afterword explains how he took up law and local politics to please his father, and how hard work and intelligence led him to the Presidency."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Citizen

Download or read book Citizen written by Louise W. Knight and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-09-15 with total page 599 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jane Addams was the first American woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Now Citizen, Louise W. Knight's masterful biography, reveals Addams's early development as a political activist and social philosopher. In this book we observe a powerful mind grappling with the radical ideas of her age, most notably the ever-changing meanings of democracy. Citizen covers the first half of Addams's life, from 1860 to 1899. Knight recounts how Addams, a child of a wealthy family in rural northern Illinois, longed for a life of larger purpose. She broadened her horizons through education, reading, and travel, and, after receiving an inheritance upon her father's death, moved to Chicago in 1889 to co-found Hull House, the city's first settlement house. Citizen shows vividly what the settlement house actually was—a neighborhood center for education and social gatherings—and describes how Addams learned of the abject working conditions in American factories, the unchecked power wielded by employers, the impact of corrupt local politics on city services, and the intolerable limits placed on women by their lack of voting rights. These experiences, Knight makes clear, transformed Addams. Always a believer in democracy as an abstraction, Addams came to understand that this national ideal was also a life philosophy and a mandate for civic activism by all. As her story unfolds, Knight astutely captures the enigmatic Addams's compassionate personality as well as her flawed human side. Written in a strong narrative voice, Citizen is an insightful portrait of the formative years of a great American leader. “Knight’s decision to focus on Addams’s early years is a stroke of genius. We know a great deal about Jane Addams the public figure. We know relatively little about how she made the transition from the 19th century to the 20th. In Knight’s book, Jane Addams comes to life. . . . Citizen is written neither to make money nor to gain academic tenure; it is a gift, meant to enlighten and improve. Jane Addams would have understood.”—Alan Wolfe, New York Times Book Review “My only complaint about the book is that there wasn’t more of it. . . . Knight honors Addams as an American original.”—Kathleen Dalton, Chicago Tribune
