Book excerpt: In early December 1862 a regiment of North Carolinians surprised and routed the blue-coated soldiers occupying Plymouth, and the furious battle leaving the town mostly rubble and ashes. Several months later the enemy returned to construct a formidable fortress of redoubts, bombproofs and palisades around the few remaining buildings. This became a base for raids up the Roanoke River against military targets, but more often included "total war" upon civilians in their homes and farms. Relief would come in April 1864 when Brigadier General Robert F. Hoke's division and the ironclad CSS Albemarle overwhelmed the fortress in one of the Civil War's most brilliantly executed and epic battles. While marauding troops in blue bring to mind Sherman in 1864 Georgia, northeastern North Carolinians experienced this much earlier and longer, and well-documented in this volume. When compared to the pantheon of well-known American Civil War battlefields, Plymouth, North Carolina does not come quickly to mind as does Gettysburg, Sharpsburg and Shiloh. Too often overlooked in the shade of late-war battles in North Carolina such as Fort Fisher and Bentonville, the epic battle fought here in mid-April 1864 was a much-needed triumph of mostly North Carolina forces led by Brigadier General Robert F. Hoke. President Jefferson Davis was so elated by Hoke's signal victory he immediately promoted him to Major-General.

The 21st was the only North Carolina regiment with Stonewall Jackson during his 1862 Valley Campaign and remained with the same division throughout the war. It participated in every major battle fought by the Army of Northern Virginia except the 1864 Overland Campaign, when General Lee sent it to fight its own intense battles near New Bern and Plymouth. This book is written from the perspective of the 1,942 men who served in the regiment and is filled with anecdotal material gleaned from more than 700 letters and memoirs. In several cases it sheds new light on accepted but often incorrect interpretations of events. Lee wrote to Confederate president Jefferson Davis "The time is at hand when, if an attempt can be made to capture the enemy's forces at New Berne, it should be done." Over the next few months, Lee's dispatch would precipitate a momentous series of events as the Confederates, threatened by a supply crisis and an emerging peace movement, sought to seize Federal bases in eastern North Carolina. This book tells the story of these operations—the late war Confederate resurgence in the Old North State. Using rail lines to rapidly consolidate their forces, the Confederates would attack the main Federal position at New Bern in February, raid the northeastern counties in March, hit the Union garrisons at Plymouth and Washington in late April, and conclude with another attempt at New Bern in early May. The expeditions would involve joint-service operations, as the Confederates looked to support their attacks with powerful, homegrown ironclad gunboats. These offensives in early 1864 would witness the failures and successes of southern commanders including George Pickett, James Cooke, and a young, aggressive North Carolinian named Robert Hoke. Likewise they would challenge the leadership of Union army and naval officers such as Benjamin Butler, John Peck, and Charles Flusser. Newsome does not neglect the broader context, revealing how these military events related to a contested gubernatorial election; the social transformations in the state brought on by the war; the execution of Union prisoners at Kinston; and the activities of North Carolina Unionists. Lee's January proposal triggered one of the last successful Confederate offensives. The Fight for the Old North State captures the full scope, as well as the dramatic details of this struggle for North Carolina.

As word spread that the Union army had established a foothold in eastern North Carolina, slaves from the surrounding area streamed across Federal lines seeking freedom. By early 1863, nearly 1,000 refugees had gathered on Roanoke Island, working together to create a thriving community that included a school and several churches. As the settlement expanded, the Reverend Horace James, an army chaplain from Massachusetts, was appointed to oversee the establishment of a freedmen's colony there. James and his missionary assistants sought to instill evangelical fervor and northern republican values in the colonists, who numbered nearly 3,500 by 1865, through a plan that included education, small-scale land ownership, and a system of wage labor.
