Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mary of Plymouth: A Story of the Pilgrim Settlement The purpose of this series of stories is to show the children, and even those who have already taken up the study of history, the home life of the colonists with whom they meet in their books. To this end every effort has been made to avoid anything savor ing of romance, and to deal only with facts, so far as that is possible, while describing the daily life of those people who conquered the Wilderness whether for conscience sake or for gain. That the stories may appeal more directly to the children, they are told from the viewpoint of a child, and purport to have been related by a child. Should any criticism be made regarding the seeming neglect to mention important historical facts, the answer would be that these books are not Sent out as histories, - although it is believed that they will awaken a desire to learn more of the building of the nation, and only such incidents as would be particularly noted by a child are used. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chronicles: Of the Pilgrim Fathers of the Colony of Plymouth, From 1602 to 1625 This volume will be found to contain an authentic History of the Pilgrim Fathers who planted the Colony of Plymouth, from their origin in John Robinson's congregation in 1602, to his death in 1625, written by themselves. Some account of the nature of these Chronicles, and of the circumstances which led to their compilation in this form, may not be unacceptable to the reader. It is well known to those who are familiar with the early history of New England, that William Bradford, the second governor of Plymouth, wrote a History of that People and Colony from 1602 to 1647, in 270 folio pages; which was used by Morton in compiling his Memorial, by Hutchinson in writing his History of Massachusetts, and by Prince in digesting his Annals of New England. But a warm bath, a supper, and a night's sleep at the Tremont House had changed all these conditions for the better. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Pilgrim Maid: A Story of Plymouth Colony in 1620 This story is like those we hear of our neighbours to-day: it is a mixture of fact and fancy. The aim in telling it has been to present Plymouth Colony as it was in its first three years of existence; to keep to possibilities, even while inventing inci dents. Actual events have been transferred from a later to an earlier year when they could be made useful, to bring them within the story's compass, and to develop it. For instance, John Billington was lost for five days and died early, but not as early as in the story. Stephen Hopkins was fined for allowing his servants to play shovelboard, but this did not happen till some time later than 1622. Stephen Hopkins was twice married; records show that there was dissen sion; that the second Wife tried to get an inheritance for her own children, to the injury of the son and daughter of the first Wife. Facts of this sort are used, enlarged upon, construed to cause, or altered to suit, certain results. But there is fidelity to the general trend of events, above all to the spirit of Plymouth in its beginnings. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pilgrim Spirit: A Pageant in Celebration of the Tercentenary of the Landing of the Pilgrims at Plymouth, Massachusetts, December 21, 1620 As the Pageant begins, there is a fanfare of trumpets passing to a hymn-like chord. From the canopied rock a rich, powerful voice speaks. The speaker is unseen. I, the rock of Plymouth, speak to you, Americans. Here I rested in the ooze From the ages primordial. Men came and went: Norsemen, Seamen of England, voyagers of France, Dutch adventurers; Over and round me The Indians worked, played, lived. I was a rock of millions along the shore, Waiting, - for what? Came pestilence, sweeping the Indians from the land. Not one remaining here at Patuxet, Accomack. Cap St. Louis, New England, as the Indian, the French, Prince Charles of England, called this spot. Around me the cleared fields waiting, The bay swarming with fish, The woods full of game, all waiting. I, too, waiting, for what? In England, growing, the spirit of man, Freed by his Bible, read in his home, Studied with passion. Out of the Church of England - a Puritan. This book was released on 2016-06-21 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Women of the Mayflower and Women of Plymouth Colony The Pilgrim Women have been written about so little that it is indeed a pleasure to welcome a book bearing the title, The Women of the Mayflower and Plymouth Colony. History has dwelt long and minutely upon the Pilgrim Fathers and their great adventure, but has passed over the women with a generalization and occasionally a tribute. Even their contemporaries have had but little to say about them. The author of this little book is to be highly commended therefore for this much need ed addition to our meagre store of literature about the mothers of this Nation. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the Days of the Pilgrim Fathers Just as there is great confusion between Pilgrims and Puritans, so it is far from clear to most Ameri cans that, for more than sixty years, that is from 1628 to 1691 when the Colony at Plymouth and that centering about Salem, Charlestown, and Boston, were merged' under one Constitution what we now call Massachusetts, consisted of two distinct colonies, two centers of life and influence, which, though separated geographically by only forty miles, were in every other respect very far apart. Almost the only thing which these two Colonies had in common was the allegiance which both conceded to England. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pilgrim Land: From Plymouth to Provincetown in Pastel Born of the sea, and the spume of its wash; bred to the wind, and the wild bird's cry; its secret is murmur of wave to pine; its song is the song of the warm blue sky! When the glaciers went over, and the clay with the rocks went under; storms leaped the ridges, and cut the contours; and life began with the heaped up sand! Between the bay and the ocean, burning winds, for ages, have signed the sun's signature upon marsh and bog, scrubland and forest! The shore birds nest the grasses, Peewits and sandpipers Flit the salt edges; Bittern and shelldrake Follow the creeks To the ponds and plashes! A land of homing; the homing of sea winds and wild wings! The homing of color and music, of bird song and sunshine and sunsets! The homing of star faith, of moon myths and legends; The homing of happiness; human illusions and memories! A voice sings to the morning its far off paean of conquest, And chants to the evening its solemn cadence of rest! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Cary the Plymouth Pilgrim The age of chivalry has passed away; We cannot now on tourney-fields display Our strength and courage; neither did we flee From native land to find beyond the sea Freedom and justice; these we now possess, And need not seek them in the wilderness. Yet even now must we fierce battles fight, And firmly stand as champions of the right. Valor is needed if we hope to win Our victories over greed, and wrong and sin. The roses white must we preserve from stain, And other trophies by our valor gain. Then let each one who bears the Cary name Remember whence his shield and motto came Remember, too, the one who brought them o'er The ocean's waves to this New England shore. 'all that the fathers have by valor gained Must by the sons be valiantly maintained. Then take the shield; go forward to the fight; Guard well the roses; may their silvery light Shine on brave deeds performed for truth and right.
