Book The pollination of cultivated plants A compendium for practitioners

Download or read book The pollination of cultivated plants A compendium for practitioners written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2018-10-15 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than twenty years ago, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations contributed to the growing recognition of the role of pollination in agricultural production, with the publication of “The Pollination of Cultivated Plants in the Tropics”. Since that time, the appreciation of pollinators has grown, alongside the realization that we stand to lose them. But our knowledge and understanding of crop pollination, pollinator biology, and best management practices has also expanded over this time. This volume is the first of two “compendiums for practitioners”, sharing expert knowledge on all dimensions of crop pollination in both temperate and tropical zones. The focus in this first volume is on applied crop and system-specific pollination.

Book Handbook of Plum Fruit

Book excerpt: In the last ten years there has been an exponential increase in the adoption of high-density farming, which leads to better yield and higher-quality fruits, thus improving the economic return. Handbook of Plum Fruit: Production, Postharvest Science, and Processing Technology covers all the recent advances in plum production, harvesting, handling and processing. Divided into two main parts, the first eight chapters provide insight about preharvest processing of plums, whereas the later chapters discuss the postharvest processing of plums. This book also includes vital chapters on varietal improvement and rootstock breeding, high-density planting, and pollination. After harvesting, plum quality quickly diminishes, mainly due to weight loss, total acidity, loss of firmness, and decay. Key Features: In-depth information on the pre- and postharvest processing of plums Coverage on plum harvesting, handling, and storage practices Plum by-product utilization and potential health benefits Handbook of Plum Fruit provides comprehensive information on recent advances in postharvesting technologies of plum. Book Crop Pollination by Bees Volume 2

Download or read book Crop Pollination by Bees Volume 2 written by Keith S. Delaplane and published by CABI. This book was released on 2023-09-26 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the second half of the 20th Century, our agricultural bee pollinators have faced mounting threats from ecological disturbance and pan-global movement of pathogens and parasites. At the same time, the area of pollinator-dependent crops is increasing globally with no end in sight. Never before has so much been asked of our finite pool of bee pollinators. This book not only explores the evolutionary and ecologic bases of these dynamics, it translates this knowledge into practical research-based guidance for using bees to pollinate crops. It emphasizes conserving wild bee populations as well as culturing honey bees, bumble bees, and managed solitary bees. To cover such a range of biology, theory, and practice from the perspectives of both the pollinator and the crop, the book is divided into two volumes. Volume 1 focuses on bees, their biology, coevolution with flowering plants, foraging ecology and management, and gives practical ways to increase bee abundance and pollinating performance on the farm. Volume 2 (this volume) focuses on crops, with chapters addressing crop-specific requirements and bee pollination management recommendations. Both volumes are essential reading for farmers, horticulturists and gardeners, researchers and professionals working in insect ecology and conservation, and students of entomology and crop protection.

Book Plum Pollination Classic Reprint

Download or read book Plum Pollination Classic Reprint written by A. H. Hendrickson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plum Pollination The yield records for these trees which are available for the years 1915, 1916, and 1917, show some further interesting facts. The first three varieties, which as a rule are the first to blossom each spring, show a comparatively low yield record. Combination yielded at the average rate of 83, 24, and 20 pounds per tree for the three years, giving an average of 42 pounds per tree resulting from a set of per cent. Kelsey gave a consistent average yield of 46, and 30 pounds, or a total average of 38.1'pounds for three years from an average set of 9 per cent. No great difference in yield followed in 1917 as the result of the low percentage of set. Satsuma produced an average yield per tree of and 60 pounds, or a total average of for the years 1915 and 1917. These yields resulted from an average normal set of per cent. The foregoing varieties blossom very early and the yields thus far can only be considered fair from a commercial point of view.
