His masterpiece, Self-Help, promoted thrift and claimed that poverty was caused largely by irresponsible habits, while also attacking materialism and laissez-faire government. Self-Help "elevated Smiles to celebrity status: almost overnight, he became a leading pundit and much-consulted guru". The book was translated and published in Dutch, French, Danish, German, Italian, Japanese, Arabic, Turkish, and in several Indian languages. The founder of Toyota Industries Co., Ltd., Sakichi Toyoda was significantly influenced by his reading of Self-Help. A copy of Self-Help is under a glass display at the museum that exists on Sakichi Toyoda's birth site.

With this momentous occasion, a new generation of foot soldiers was mobilized, ready to work for and with a man who convinced them that real change was possible. “Yes we can!” became more than an election slogan. With a fun, exciting design and an optimistic approach sure to attract readers of all ages, Generation Change is a book no American citizen should miss.
