Book excerpt: Hudson Higgins had fond memories of Boggy Creek from his childhood. So what better place to escape New York City for a few weeks to finish up a book that was nearing deadline than the small town in New Hampshire his parents visited nearly every summer. What he couldn't have known was how his life would be turned upside down when he walked into Greer Larson's bookstore his first day in town. Greer Larson lived a quiet life in her hometown of Boggy Creek. She had worked nearly her whole adult life to make her dreams of owning her bookstore come true-and now, Turning Pages was her everything. She lived, eat, and breathed the success of owning her own business. That is, until a stranger came to town and showed Greer that there was more to life than simply working. A friendship between Greer and Hudson quickly formed over their love of books and the outdoors. When Greer's bookstore is threatened, Hudson soon realizes he hasn't simply fallen for the charm of Boggy Creek and Greer, he'd fallen in love...with both the town, and the woman who stole his heart from the moment she first smiled at him. Playing with Words is book two in the Boggy Creek Valley series and is a stand alone novel.

  • Publisher : Routledge

  • ISBN : 1351553925
  • Pages : 113 pages

Download or read book Playing on Words written by David Osmond-Smith and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Luciano Berio's Sinfonia (1968) marked a return by the composer to orchestral writing after a gap of six years. This in-depth study demonstrates the central position the work occupies in Berio's output. David Osmond-Smith discusses the way in which Berio used the Bororo myth described in Levi-Strauss's Le cru et le cuit as a framework for Sinfonia. This is one of many influences in the work, which also include Joyce's 'Sirens' chapter from Ulysses, Beckett's The Unnameable and the scherzo from Mahler's 2nd Symphony. The listener who takes refuge in the score of Sinfonia, argues Osmond-Smith, finds there a maze of allusions to things beyond the score. It is some of those allusions that this book seeks to illuminate.

Book Dressing Up for the Carnival

Download or read book Dressing Up for the Carnival written by Carol Shields and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2001-05-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A story collection from the Pulitzer Prize winning author of Stone Diaries In Dressing Up for the Carnival, Carol Shields distills her characteristic wisdom, elegance, and insouciant humor in twenty-two luminous stories. A wealth of surprises and contrasts, this collection ranges from the lyricism of "Weather," in which a couple's life is thrown into chaos when the National Association of Meteorologists goes on strike, to the swampy sexuality of "Eros," in which a room in a Parisian hotel on the verge of ruin is the catalyst for passion, to the brave confidence of "A Scarf"-new for this collection-which chronicles the realities of a fledging author's book tour. Playful, graceful, acutely observed, and generous of spirit, these stories will delight her devoted fans and win her new converts as well.
