Oberlin College changed the face of American higher education in 1835 when it began enrolling students irrespective of race and sex. Camaraderie among races flourished at the Ohio institution and at two other leading abolitionist colleges, Berea in Kentucky and New York Central, where Black and white students allied in the fight for emancipation and civil rights. After Reconstruction, however, color lines emerged on even the most progressive campuses. For new generations of white students and faculty, ideas of fairness toward African Americans rarely extended beyond tolerating their presence in the classroom, and overt acts of racial discrimination grew increasingly common by the 1880s. John Frederick Bell’s Degrees of Equality analyzes the trajectory of interracial reform at Oberlin, New York Central, and Berea, noting its implications for the progress of racial justice in both the nineteenth and twenty-first centuries. Drawing on student and alumni writings, institutional records, and promotional materials, Bell interrogates how abolitionists and their successors put their principles into practice. The ultimate failure of these social experiments illustrates a tragic irony of abolitionism, as the achievement of African American freedom and citizenship led whites to divest from the project of racial pluralism.

Me: Did Women's Football go so wrong? or are women partly to blame for the lack of equality? After all, women were never banned from playing, they were only stopped from playing on FA approved fields. Keith: Answer to this first point is contentious as it's a different era and we could be talking about multiple sports not just football. True women were not banned from playing and in fact did continue to play and they played for the reason most people and kids let alone women played the game, simply because they loved to play. My own wife who you know very well, was and still is one of the most passionate ever to play the game in England. She like so many paid to play and was happy too. Sacrificed a complete social life and that included weddings and family christenings to play. It's a cliché but imagine what salary she might command now and that is the only thing we wonder about, but if you ask her, she would not change anything. She loved her time playing the game the players she played alongside for club and country with tremendous pride. Was it ever about money? Absolutely not but did they deserve to at minimum at least get expenses if not more of course they did. Also, the players from those eras are the ones that broke the ground for the players who are reaping those benefits today and maybe deserve more recognition for that. But she is not bitter. Like any equality issues in any environment, culture or profession or sport, someone must kickstart the changes. That has happened now it's about the way forward and the speed in which it moves.

The first, which he calls the nondiscrimination principle, states that in the competition for positions in society, individuals should be judged only on attributes relevant to the performance of the duties of the position in question. Attributes such as race or sex should not be taken into account. The second states that society should do what it can to level the playing field among persons who compete for positions, especially during their formative years, so that all those who have the relevant potential attributes can be considered. Common to both positions is that at some point the principle of equal opportunity holds individuals accountable for achievements of particular objectives, whether they be education, employment, health, or income. Roemer argues that there is consequently a "before" and an "after" in the notion of equality of opportunity: before the competition starts, opportunities must be equalized, by social intervention if need be; but after it begins, individuals are on their own. The different views of equal opportunity should be judged according to where they place the starting gate which separates "before" from "after." Roemer works out in a precise way how to determine the location of the starting gate in the different views.
