Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third and final volume in a trilogy of prayer manuals compiled by Publishers Weekly religion editor Phyllis Tickle as a contemporary Book of Hours to guide Christians gently yet authoritatively through the daily offices. The Divine Hours is the first major literary and liturgical reworking of the sixth-century Benedictine Rule of fixed-hour prayer. This beautifully conceived and thoroughly modern three-volume guide will appeal to the theological novice as well as to the ecclesiastical sophisticate. Making primary use of the Book of Common Prayer and the writings of the Church Fathers, The Divine Hours is also a companion to the New Jerusalem Bible, from which it draws its Scripture readings. The trilogy blends prayer and praise in a way that, while extraordinarily fresh, respects and builds upon the ancient wisdom of Christianity. The third and final book in the set, Prayers for Springtime, provides prayers, psalms, and readings for this season associated with rebirth. Compact, it is perfect for those seeking greater spiritual depth. As a contemporary Book of Hours, The Divine Hours: Prayers for Springtime heralds a renewal of the tradition of disciplined daily prayer, and gives those already using the first two volumes the completion they are seeking. With this volume, the series culminates with three prayer manuals encompassing the liturgical and calendar year with the offices for every day.

Hawkins will guide you—calmly and simply—through the busy season of Advent, and you'll come out of the four weeks more centered, rested, and spiritually renewed. Download or read book Oriens written by Father Joel Sember and published by Our Sunday Visitor. This book was released on 2020-07-10 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Make a life-changing pilgrimage, beginning this Advent. While the world rushes, you'll slow down. While others are distracted, you'll find focus. When everything seems dark, you'll see light. Oriens: a Latin word meaning "rising" and "dawn." Your Oriens journey begins on the First Sunday of Advent and continues until the feast of the Presentation on February 2. Every day, you'll take a step closer to "the dawn from on high." Father Joel Alexander Sember is your guide on an entirely new pilgrimage, one in which you will learn what God is revealing to you, uniquely, through Scripture and prayer. In Oriens: A Pilgrimage Through Advent and Christmas, you'll learn how to pray, or to pray more deeply. Each day you'll read a Scripture passage, receive Father Joel's guidance on how to pray with that passage, and find questions for reflection and journaling. If in years past you have found yourself reaching Christmas only to wonder how you missed Advent, this book will speak to you. If other Advent reflection books have seemed shallow or unfulfilling, this book will open your heart to hearing the voice of God. Welcome, Oriens pilgrim. "Fr. Joel has written a warm and practical guide for our pilgrimage through the liturgical seasons of Advent and Christmas. Derived from his experiences as a pastor, spiritual director, and pilgrim himself, this book will guide all who read it into a deeper friendship with Jesus Christ. During this time of uncertainty and spiritual hunger, this simple yet profound book reminds all of us that God has come to save us and to give us hope." — Bishop David L. Ricken, Diocese of Green Bay, Wisconin "Fr. Joel Sember's Advent resource, Oriens: A Pilgrimage through Advent and Christmas, provides an accessible and practical guide for personal prayer as the Church prepares for and celebrates the birth of Christ. By design, Fr. Sember avoids writing meditations based on the season's Scriptures. Instead, he shares daily encouragement for people who want to encounter the Lord for themselves through the beautiful biblical passages drawn from the Church's liturgy in these weeks. Using the analogy of a walking pilgrimage to describe the annual journey though Advent and Christmas, Fr. Sember fosters the journey of the heart of the Christian, who desires to enter into a deeper personal relationship with the Lord. Fr. Sember's approach in helping people to notice how the Lord is addressing them uniquely will help many people to experience the Lord's presence more deeply in their own lives."—Fr. Jim Rafferty, director of spiritual formation at the Institute for Priestly Formation "A delight to read, Fr. Joel Sember provides an opportunity for our Advent journey to be one grounded in the rhythm of prayer and pilgrimage. With great joy and humility, Fr. Joel combines wisdom from the Scriptures with impactful lessons from his own life. A gem of a book!"—Julianne Stanz, Director of Parish Life and Evangelization, Diocese of Green Bay "The Catholic faithful want to know how to enter into the depths of prayer. They want to go beyond just mealtime, bedtime, and scripted prayers. Fr. Joel Sember teaches methods of prayer for the seasons of Advent and Christmas, allowing all the faithful to take their communication to and with God to the next level." — Fr. Edward Looney, author of A Rosary Litany

Book The Season of Light

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jay Cormier
  • Publisher : Liturgical Press
  • Release : 1997
  • ISBN : 9780814624685
  • Pages : 100 pages

Download or read book The Season of Light written by Jay Cormier and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Season of Light is a guide for families, households, classrooms, communities, and parishes who wish to make the lighting of the Advent candles a daily prayer. For each day of the season, from the First Sunday of Advent until Christmas Day, The Season of Light offers a brief liturgy that is based on the structure of Vespers or Evening Prayer in the Liturgy of the Hours: the lighting of the candles (the lucernarium"), a reading from the Advent Scriptures, petitions and collect, and a final blessing. The Advent wreath is one of the most enduring customs of the Christmas season. Rich in meaning, the four lights of the Advent wreath kindle "our blessed hope and manifestation of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ." (Titus 2:13). It is a symbol of our faith: that light and life will triumph over darkness and death, that our hope in God's providence and love will never leave us disappointed. With this rich tradition in mind, Jay Cormier has structured the daily liturgies in The Season of Light as follows: "The Lucernarium," the lighting of the candle(s); "The Word of God," in which a lector reads a Scripture passage that reflects the Advent themes of joyful expectation and the restoration of justice and peace in the dawning of Jesus Christ, the Light of the World; and "Prayers," in which the presider or leader offers petitions and all respond. Then the Lord's Prayer is recited, and the final collect and the blessing (including a scriptural blessing and a table blessing before meals) are offered by the presider. The structure and prayers in The Season of Light are offered as suggestions; adaptions are encouraged. For example, families may wish to make the intercessions an opportunity for spontaneous prayers offered by participants; groups with musical ability and leadership may want to incorporate hymns from the rich treasury of Advent and Christian hymnody; those who pray the Liturgy of the Hours regularly might consider including the Advent wreath custom with the psalms and prayers of the Hours. Designed for all those who wish to make the Advent wreath a daily prayer and part of their Christmas observance and tradition, The Season of Light helps Christians celebrate that we are an Advent people: a people who live in the eternal hope and expectation of the ever-burning light of Jesus Christ. Jay Cormier is the editor of Connections, a newsletter of ideas and resources for homilists. The Liturgical Press has also published his Lord, Hear Our Prayer: The Prayer of the Faithful for Sundays, Holy Days, and Ritual Masses and The Family Advent Wreath: Blessings and Prayers. "

Book Dayspring from on High

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robert Eimer
  • Publisher : Liturgical Press
  • Release : 1999
  • ISBN : 9780814625767
  • Pages : 84 pages

Download or read book Dayspring from on High written by Robert Eimer and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1994 Pope John Paul II called for Christians to prepare for the 2000th anniversary of the birth of Jesus. In 1997-99, the Church entered into an immediate period of preparation?a three- year Advent in order that the year 2000 might spiritually be a special "year of grace." In these years of preparation, the Pope emphasized the theological virtues of faith, hope, and love plus the virtue of justice. Inspired by the Pope's challenge, Dayspring from on High is a distinctive Advent devotional: the four weeks of Advent have been divided thematically, beginning with Week One, the virtue of faith; Week Two, the virtue of hope; Week Three, the virtue of justice; and culminating in Week Four with the virtue of love. Dayspring from on High includes some traditional elements like the lighting of the Advent candle and singing or reciting "Come, O Come Emmanuel." A brief quote from Pope John Paul II is the focus of each day's prayer. In addition, the service invites the reader to more personal prayer, which includes a reflection, a resolution, a Scripture reading, and petitions. The service ends with a contemporary profession of faith. Individuals, families, and those involved in the RCIA will find Dayspring from on High a unique way to enter wholeheartedly into Advent.

  • ISBN : 1646800028
  • Pages : 64 pages

Download or read book Advent and Christmas written by Katie Prejean McGrady and published by Ave Maria Press. This book was released on 2020-08-21 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the success of their bestselling devotional Lent: One Day at a Time for Catholic Teens, youth ministry experts Katie Prejean McGrady and Tommy McGrady offer devotions for Advent and Christmas that help teens make sense of the things that matter most in their lives such as relationships, their future, and coping with stress. Realistic and easy to use, each daily devotion starts with a brief Bible quote that connects with a topic important to teens such as insecurity, pressure, trust, fitting in, finding hope, and choosing joy. A brief reflection helps teens consider the day’s topic through their faith. The McGradys sometimes offer comfort, hope, or reasons for joy in these reflections, while on other days they issue a challenge or two. Unlike many other seasonal prayer books, each day offers exercises and activities such as naming areas of teen’s lives where they want to be more hopeful or to trust God more. The result is a closer relationship with God. Each single-page, weekday devotion can be as brief as five minutes or as long as thirty if a teen chooses to do a bit extra with a feature called “Feel Ambitious?” This activity invites them to read, reflect, and respond to a longer scripture passage that connects to the day’s theme. Saturdays and Sundays offer additional challenges to reflect on the previous week and to look ahead to the next.
