Download or read book Platon et le platonisme written by Walter Pater and published by Vrin. This book was released on 1998 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Hermeneutic philosophy and Plato

Download or read book Hermeneutic philosophy and Plato written by Christopher Gill and published by Nomos Verlagsgesellschaft. This book was released on 2010 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of new essays by an international group of scholars examines the response of Hans-Georg Gadamer to Plato, especially to the Philebus. The book studies Gadamer's interpretative approach to the dialogues and unwritten doctrines of Plato. It also shows how, for Gadamer, reading Plato was intimately interconnected with formulating his own philosophical views. The volume also brings out how Gadamer influenced Donald Davidson in his reading of Plato and his philosophical thought. The volume thus explores a fascinating case-study of the creative reception of Plato by two major twentieth-century philosophers, Gadamer and Davidson, while also clarifying Gadamer's relationship to Heidegger. It will be of interest to scholars and students of Plato, especially on the Philebus, and also to scholars of twentieth-century thought.

Book Platon

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ronald Bonan
  • Publisher : Belles Lettres
  • Release : 2014
  • ISBN : 9782251760797
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Platon written by Ronald Bonan and published by Belles Lettres. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English summary: Ronald Bonan analyzes Platos exploration of what is most valid in man, and his quest for true knowledge. Platos efforts to know what is good engendered other problems, such as the status of truth, the possibility of finding it through science, the nature of our errors, and the status of non-being. Plato ties these together in what he considered to be the best framework for educating man, the city, in which politics and ethics are thus the same.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An intellectual biography of the renowned and influential observer of the "era of tyrannies" Élie Halévy (1870-1937) was one of the most respected and influential intellectuals of the French Third Republic. In this densely contextualized biography, K. Steven Vincent describes how Halévy, best remembered as the historian of British Utilitarianism and nineteenth-century English history, was also a persistent, acute, and increasingly anxious observer of society in a period defined by industrialization and imperialism and by what Halévy famously called the "era of tyrannies." Vincent distinguishes three broad phases in the development of Halévy's thought. In the first, Halévy brought his version of neo-Kantianism to debates with sociologists and philosophers and to his study of English Utilitarianism. He forged ties with Xavier Léon, Léon Brunschvicg, and Alain (Émile-Auguste Chartier), life-long intellectual interlocutors. Together they founded the Revue de métaphysique et de morale, a continuing venue for Halévy's reflections. The Dreyfus Affair, Vincent argues, caused Halévy to shift his focus from philosophy to history and from metaphysics to politics. He became a philosopher-historian, less interested in abstract neo-Kantianism and more in real-world action, less given to rarified debates over truth and more to investigation of how theories and their applications were situated within broader political, economic, and cultural movements. World War I and its destabilizing effects provoked the third phase, Vincent explains. As he watched reason recede before rabid nationalism and a pox of political enthusiasms, Halévy sounded the alarm about liberal democracy's vulnerabilities. Vincent situates Halévy on the unsteady and narrowing middle ground between state socialism and fascism, showing how he defended liberalism while, at the same time, appreciating socialists' analyses of capitalism's negative impact and their calls for reform and greater economic equality. Through his analysis of Halévy's life and works, Vincent illuminates the complexity of the Third Republic's philosophical, historical, and political thought and concludes with an incisive summary of the distinctive nature of French liberalism.

Book Plato and Socrates RLE Plato

Download or read book Plato and Socrates RLE Plato written by Richard McKirahan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This valuable work of reference provides a comprehensive bibliography on all scholarly work that was published on Plato and Socrates during the years 1958-73. It thus forms an important addition to Harold Cherniss’s bibliography, which covered the years 1950-7. The author has sought to include all materials primarily concerned with Socrates and Plato, together with other works which make a contribution to our understanding of the two philosophers. The bibliography is arranged by topic and there are cross-references at the end of each section. The works in each category are arranged chronologically and then alphabetically (by author) within each year. An effort has been made to distinguish when a book has had more than one edition and when an article has been reprinted. Additionally the author has listed reviews of books and dissertations as these have come to his attention.

Book Plato s Gods

    Book Details:
  • Author : Gerd Van Riel
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2016-04-22
  • ISBN : 1317079930
  • Pages : 146 pages

Download or read book Plato s Gods written by Gerd Van Riel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive study into Plato's theological doctrines, offering an important re-valuation of the status of Plato's gods and the relation between metaphysics and theology according to Plato. Starting from an examination of Plato's views of religion and the relation between religion and morality, Gerd Van Riel investigates Plato's innovative ways of speaking about the gods. This theology displays a number of diverging tendencies - viewing the gods as perfect moral actors, as cosmological principles or as celestial bodies whilst remaining true to traditional anthropomorphic representations. Plato's views are shown to be unified by the emphasis on the goodness of the gods in both their cosmological and their moral functions. Van Riel shows that recent interpretations of Plato's theology are thoroughly metaphysical, starting from aristotelian patterns. A new reading of the basic texts leads to the conclusion that in Plato the gods aren't metaphysical principles but souls who transmit the metaphysical order to sensible reality. The metaphysical principles play the role of a fated order to which the gods have to comply. This book will be invaluable to readers interested in philosophical theology and intellectual history.
