Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains papers and discussions of the Vlth Dialyse-Arzte Workshop, which was held in Bernried at Lake Starnberg near Munich the 5th and 6th of March 1980. Generous ly sponsored by Travenol, Munich, the Dialyse-Arzte meetings now have a tradition spanning 16 years. According to the con stitution of these meetings, the topics of earlier years had to cover dialysis and related fields. Thus the sponsor requested that this year also one lecture - incorporated here as part - should deal with the state of art of dialysis, thereby hopefully linking this Workshop to the previous meetings. Dialysis techniques of the 1960s, pioneered by many of attend ing speakers and panelists (see List of Contributors), have never come to a standstill. Indeed, vascular access and extra corporeal circulation have become routine for the nephrologist and have made possible the introductimn of new approaches, such as hemofiltration and hemoperfusion. Also today new membrane technologies provide us with a potentially even more effective therapeutic tool, namely plasma separation.

Book Anti Neutrophil Cytoplasmic Antibody ANCA Associated Vasculitis

Download or read book Anti Neutrophil Cytoplasmic Antibody ANCA Associated Vasculitis written by Renato Alberto Sinico and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-09-13 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, written by well-known experts in the field, covers all aspects of Anti-Neutrophil Cytoplasmic Antibody (ANCA) Associated Vasculitis (AAV). The expression refers to a group of diseases, characterized by destruction and inflammation of small vessels. The clinical signs vary and affect several organs, such as the kidney, lung, skin, nervous system and others. The opening chapters give some historical hints, explain the genetic basis of the disease and provide insights into the pathogenesis derived from recent experimental studies and guides the reader through classification and nomenclature. A large part of the book is then devoted to a detailed description of the specific related diseases and their clinical presentations, the disease course, and potential complications. The advice regarding treatment is based on the best currently available evidence in this constantly evolving area. The book is part of Springer’s series Rare Diseases of the Immune System, which presents recently acquired knowledge on pathogenesis, diagnosis, and therapy with the aim of promoting a more holistic approach to these conditions. AAVs are systemic autoimmune diseases of unknown cause that affect small (to medium) sized blood vessels. They include granulomatosis with polyangiitis (formerly Wegener's granulomatosis), microscopic polyangiitis, and eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (formerly Churg–Strauss syndrome). This volume will be an invaluable source of up-to-date information for all practitioners involved in the care of patients with these diseases.

Book Plasmapheresis and Intravenous Immunoglobin

Download or read book Plasmapheresis and Intravenous Immunoglobin written by Rossana Allegro and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plasmapheresis is a therapeutic tool used to treat a wide range of disease processes, and in which the priority aim is to ensure sufficient plasma exchange to reduce or eliminate symptoms resulting from the action of pathogenic elements vehiculised in the plasma. Scientific selective apheresis with principles of evidence-based medicine involves the application of one of the oldest therapeutic modalities (bleeding), widely used between the fourth century B.C. and the second industrial revolution. This book provides information on the use of plasmapheresis during pregnancy; therapeutic use of autologous plasma for the treatment of dry eye disease; and therapeutic plasma exchange in the neurological setting. It also discusses intravenous immunoglobulins. During the past decades intravenous immunoglobulins (IVIG) have gained more and more popularity for the treatment of a wide range of diseases and conditions. This treatment is extensively used in immune deficits, autoimmune thrombocytopenia, Kawasaki's disease, for the prevention of infectious complications due to hypogammaglobulinaemia secondary to myeloma, chronic lymphatic leukaemia and post-bone marrow and stem cell transplantation, in Guillain-Barre syndrome, etc. IV-Ig is obtained from the plasma of healthy blood donors and contains normal, polyclonal, polyspecific immunoglobins (Ig), mostly consisting of intact IgG. These antibodies are directed against non-self-antigens, self-antigens (natural autoantibodies), and other antibodies (idiotypic antibodies). The administration of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) is generally safe and well tolerated. However, the treatment of autoimmune disorders usually requires high dose therapy (1-2 g/kg) that may result in a greater frequency of side effects and adverse events. This book discusses several topics including the clinical application of intravenous immunoglobulins in autoimmune mediated ocular inflammatory diseases; complications of intravenous immunoglobulin therapy; clinical uses; and side effects.

Book The Treatment of Glomerulonephritis

Download or read book The Treatment of Glomerulonephritis written by C.D. Pusey and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-05-28 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Glomerulonephritis is one of the commonest causes of end-stage renal failure worldwide. Although there have been considerable advances in the management of renal failure by dialysis and transplantation, there has been relatively little progress in its prevention. This volume sets out to review current practice in the treatment of glomerulonephritis, which is aimed both at controlling the clinical manifestations, e.g. nephrotic syndrome, and at preventing the progression to renal failure. The term glomerulonephritis covers a wide range of conditions with different immunological, histological and clinical features. This volume therefore starts with reviews of the immunology and pathology of different types of glomerulonephritis. This is followed by detailed consideration of the treatment of the commoner primary and secondary forms of the disease. There are separate chapters on special circumstances, such as glomerulonephritis in pregnancy or following renal transplantation. In each chapter, attempts are made to review the evidence for the effectiveness of treatment, based on controlled trials, immunopathological principles and the authors' considerable experience. Although some aspects of the treatment of glomerulonephritis can be found in the standard texts on renal disease, this volume provides an up-to-date, thoroughly referenced, and practical guide to management. As such, it should be of value to nephrologists and general physicians, including those in training, and to postgraduate students of nephrology.
