First, changes in soil characteristics resulting from prolonged conifer dominance in successional aspen-conifer forests were studied. The primary objective of this paper was to identify how increasing conifer dominance that develops in later successional stages alters forest soil characteristics. Soil measurements were collected along a stand composition gradient, which includes the range of conditions that exists through the stages of secondary succession in aspen-conifer forests. Soil chemistry, moisture content, respiration, and temperature were measured. There was a consistent trend in which aspen stands demonstrated higher mean soil nutrient concentrations than adjacent meadows, mixed or conifer stands. Soil moisture was significantly higher in aspen stands than conifer stands or meadows throughout the summer. The results indicate that soil resource availability and respiration peak within aspen dominated stands that are present during early succession and then decrease as conifer abundance increases along our stand composition gradient, representative of stand characteristics present in mid to late successional stages.

We found that as overstory conifer density increases, aspen decrease in density, basal area, and seedling establishment. Conifers were shown to establish closer to aspen as the canopy increased in conifer density. As this proximity relationship extended into the canopy there is increased mortality in both aspen and subalpine fir, suggesting both facilitation and competition.

Book excerpt: Forest soils store as much carbon (C) as the vegetation that grows on them, and the carbon in soil is more stable than the C in biomass. Quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) is the most widespread tree species in North America, and aspen forests in the Western US have been found to store more soil organic carbon (SOC) in the mineral soil than nearby conifers. Fire exclusion and grazing often promote the succession of aspen to conifer dominated forests due to their effect on aspen regeneration. So far the factors driving the differential SOC accumulation, and the effects of the vegetation shift on SOC pools, are not well understood. In this dissertation I aimed to evaluate how various forest vegetation characteristics - tree type, detritus fluxes, detritus chemistry - affect SOC pools and stability from a global to a molecular level using two contrasting forest types - aspen and conifer. A meta-analysis showed that, while conifer forests worldwide had higher C pools in the forest floor, this difference did not translate into the mineral soil, suggesting that the mechanisms that control SOC storage differ between both soil compartments. Above- and belowground detritus input fluxes were similar between aspen and conifer forests, and did not explain the higher SOC pools under aspen. A sorption study revealed that the more labile aspen foliage dissolved organic carbon (DOC) was more effectively retained in soil than aspen root, and conifer substrate DOC. Furthermore, soils that contained aspen SOC retained new DOC better than soils with conifer SOC, irrespective of the source of the DOC. Finally, foliage and root specific compounds that were identified for aspen and subalpine fir provide a base for future studies aiming to identify the source of SOC under both overstory types. Overall, the results of the dissertation suggest that substrate chemistry more than detritus fluxes drive the differences between SOC pools under aspen and conifer forests in Utah. This finding indicates that the link between C input amounts and SOC pools is not as direct as currently assumed in most SOC models. Furthermore, a tree species effect on SOC as distinct as aspen vs conifer is not common between all hardwood and conifer comparisons worldwide, thus suggesting that the effect of vegetation can be overridden by other factors.

Book excerpt: Human activities are changing wildfire regimes globally through ignition, spread of invasive species, fire suppression, and climate change. Because of this, ecosystems are experiencing novel fire regimes that may alter plant growth and patterns of succession. Annual growth rings are one metric that can track changes in tree and shrub growth patterns over time in response to changing fire frequency. In Chapter 1 we explored the effects of fire on resprouting native shrubs in the Mojave Desert. Fires are becoming increasingly frequent due to the spread of highly flammable invasive grasses in the region. We monitored growth and fruit production of Larrea tridentata D.C. (creosote bush) on burned and unburned transects from three independent 2005 wildfires. Even though creosote has a high fire mortality rate, we found that resprouting creosote produced 4.7 times the amount of fruit and had stems that grew nearly twice as fast compared to creosote in unburned areas. Our data suggest that creosote can resprout after fire and thrives in its growth rates and reproduction in post-fire environments. In Chapter 2 we used annual Basal Area Increment to investigate how fire suppression has altered facilitation and competition interactions through stages of succession in mixed aspen-conifer forests. We found that aspen had lower growth rates in mixed aspen-conifer stands compared to aspen dominant stands. We also found that aspen growing with an associated fir tree due to facilitation had increasingly lower growth rates over time than those growing independently. Fir trees in mixed stands were facilitated over time by associated aspen trees while fir trees growing in association and independently in aspen stands showed no statistical difference from each other but grew better than independent fir trees in mixed stands. Our data suggest that restoring a more frequent fire regime will balance competitive interactions between aspen and conifer in subalpine forests.

Book excerpt: Invasions by exotic grasses, particularly annuals, rank among the most extensive and intensive ways that humans are contributing to the transformation of the earth’s surface. The problem is particularly notable with a suite of exotic grasses in the Bromus genus in the arid and semiarid regions that dominate the western United States, which extend from the dry basins near the Sierra and Cascade Ranges across the Intermountain Region and Rockies to about 105° longitude. This genus includes approximately 150 species that have a wide range of invasive and non-invasive tendencies in their home ranges and in North America. Bromus species that became invasive upon introduction to North America in the late 1800’s, such as Bromus tectorum and B. rubens, have since became the dominant cover on millions of hectares. Here, millenia of ecosystem development led to landscapes that would otherwise be dominated by perennial shrubs, herbs, and biotic soil crusts that were able to persist in spite of variable and scarce precipitation. This native ecosystem resilience is increasingly coveted by land owners and managers as more hectares lose their resistance to Bromus grasses and similar exotics and as climate, land use, and disturbance-regime changes are also superimposed. Managers are increasingly challenged to glean basic services from these ecosystems as they become invaded. Exotic annual grasses reduce wildlife and livestock carrying capacity and increase the frequency and extent of wildfi res and associated soil erosion. This book uses a unique ecoregional and multidisciplinary approach to evaluate the invasiveness, impacts, and management of the large Bromus genus.
