Book Plant Products and Chemical Fertilizers Classic Reprint

Download or read book Plant Products and Chemical Fertilizers Classic Reprint written by S. Hoare Collins and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plant Products and Chemical Fertilizers The rapid development of Applied Chemistry in recent years has brought about a revolution in all branches of technology. This growth has been accelerated during the war, and the British Empire has now an opportunity of increasing its industrial output by the application of this knowledge to the raw materials available in the different parts of the world. The subject in this series of handbooks will be treated from the chemical rather than the engineering standpoint. The industrial aspect will also be more prominent than that of the laboratory. Each volume will be complete in itself, and will give a general survey of the industry, showing how chemical principles have been applied and have affected manufacture. The influence of new inventions on the development of the industry will be shown, as also the effect of industrial requirements in stimulating invention. Historical notes will be a feature in dealing with the different branches of the subject, but they will be kept within moderate limits. Present tendencies and possible future developments will have attention, and some space will be devoted to a comparison of industrial methods and progress in the chief producing countries. There will be a general bibliography, and also a select bibliography to follow each section. Statistical information will only be introduced in so far as it serves to illustrate the line of argument. Each book will be divided into sections instead of chapters, and the sections will deal with separate branches of the subject in the manner of a special article or monograph. This book was released on 2017-11-18 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prewar World Production and Consumption of Plant Foods in Fertilizers The leading prewar producers of nitrogen were Germany, Chile, Japan, and the United States. German production was nearly three times that of Chile and, in fact, slightly exceeded the combined production of Chile, Japan, and the United States. The production of these latter three varied from each other by _less than tons a year. Ger many also was the largest consumer of chemical nitrogen; the United States, Japan, and France followed. German consumption was about 70 per cent greater than that of the United States, more than double that of Japan, and nearly 3% times that of France. Germany ranked fifth with regard to the quantity of nitrogen used per unit area of arable land and fourth for that used on the basis of arable land and permanent meadows and pastures. Consumers of more nitrogen than Germany per unit of arable land were: ' The Netherlands, more than twice as much; the belgo-luxemburg Economic Union, 50 percent more; Japan, about 40 percent more; and Egypt, about 11 percent more. Germany in turn used more than 12 times as much nitrogen per unit of arable land as the United States, which ranked twenty-second. The belgo-luxemburg Economic Union, the Netherlands, and Japan exceeded Ger many in, the use of nitrogen per unit area of arable land and permanent meadows and pastures. The United States ranked thirteenth in this category. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Fertilizers and Their Use Classic Reprint

Download or read book Fertilizers and Their Use Classic Reprint written by Robert Harcourt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-17 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fertilizers and Their Use On our comparatively new lands, and in general farm practice where a judicious rotation of crops is followed. And where grain is fed on the farm and the manure properly cared for, it may not be necessary to use commercial fertilizers; but where the nature of the crops grown prevents rotation, and where very little farmyard manure is produced, they may be required. More and more each year it is found that the increased cost of production and the consequent need of producing maximum crops, and the growing demands of the larger towns and cities for garden and fruit products of high quality, are causing market gardeners and fruit growers to consider seriously the advisability of using some form of fertilizer. This has created a demand for information concerning these substances which it has not been easy to fill; for experience has shown that the farmer must posses a wide knowledge of plants, soils and the fertilizers themselves before he can properly use them. To intelligently and economically use fertilizers, it is essential that the farmer understand the needs of the cr0ps, their power to gather the essential plant food constituents from the soil, and the purpose of their growth, i.e., whether the object is to produce an immature plant for early market, or whether maturity is required. He must also know something about the available supply of plant food' tn the soil and the nature of the fertilizer being used. These fertilizers are expensive, and unless they are intelligently applied in conjunction with very thorough cultivation they will not give their best results. They cannot take the place of cultivation; for they are food materials, and can only aid the growth of the plant as they are absorbed by the roots, and these cannot develop fully in a poorly cultivated soil. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of Liquid Fertilizers In the growing of many floricultural and other green house plants, it is often inadvisable or impossible to incorporate in the soil at the beginning sufficient available food to maintain the plants in the best condition throughout the season and secure a maximum production. Consequently feeding at varying intervals is necessary. For such feeding, liquid fertilizers are easily applicable and have been quite widely used. Download or read book Fertilizers in Relation to Soils and Crop Production Classic Reprint written by Robert Harcourt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fertilizers in Relation to Soils and Crop Production Most young plants start from a seed, which contains an embryo, or germ, that is extremely rich in albuminoids, fat, phosphates, and potash. The seed also contains a store of food, in the form of starch, fat, etc, intended to nourish the young plant until the roots and leaves are sufficiently developed to gather their own supplies, The future health and vigor of the plant will depend on: (1) the amount of food available to the tiny rootlets sent out by the young plant: (2) the temperature of the soil, (3) an abundance of sunshine, and (4) a sufficient supply of oxygen. The plant requires oxygen for respiration, and it gives of carbon dioxide as a result of the oxidation of its food, that is, it breathes; it gives off water from its leaves, or lungs, it assimilates food, and it even excretes waste material. In all this it is very similar to the animal. But it even goes further, and collects its food from the simple substances, such as carbon dioxide. Ant. Various soluble salts found in the soil, and from these builds up the complex sugars, starches, fat, and albuminoids which are essential for the life processes of the plant and which are the only foods of the animal. It is subject to im provement by selection and breeding, as is the animal, but, unlike the animal, it is entirely dependent upon the supply of food constituents within its reach, and it has no way of drawing attention to its wants, excepting as its appearance may make them known to the careful and trained observer. A clear conception of the fact that an infant plant, like the infant animal, requires warmth, air. Sunshine, and an abundance of easily absorbed food, will greatly aid in under. Standing the conditions under which it will make the best growth. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Report of the Chief of the Bureau of Chemistry and Soils 1937 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Chief of the Bureau of Chemistry and Soils, 1937 The production of agricultural materials through the medium of plant growth depends on chemical processes, energized by sunlight, in which the raw ma terials are carbon dioxide; oxygen, and nitrogen of; the air and numerous soil constituents including water, inorganic compounds derived from minerals, and organic compounds j formed through the action of -'micro-organisms on the products of former plant fand animal life. Whether or not these chemical processes go on depends not only on the availability of energy, but also on the availability of raw materials. Since the gases of the atmosphere and sunlight, in most places and at certain seasons, are always sufficiently abundant, it is the availability of raw materials from the soil which determines the course and efficiency of nature's chemical processes that result in agricultural plant and animal products. One of'the most important of these raw materials is water, the availability of which in suitable quantity depends primarily onr the physical and chemical properties of the soil colloids which make it possible for soils, in varying degree, to retain water for fairly long periods after wetting. The properties of their colloids also make it possible for some soils to retain, in spite of frequent wetting with excessive quantities of water, inorganic and, organic plant foods, naturally present or added as fertilizers, and to supply! Them, as needed, to growing plants. The kinds and quantities of raw materials suitable for the production of plants vary in different soils and, consequently, the kinds and quantities of plants that different soils can produce vary. Some soils contain substances which interfere with the natural chemical processes involved in plant growth and thus produce abnormal or unhealthy plants or alter the resulting products so that they are not suitable raw materials for the chemical processes involved in animal growth or sustenance. Moreover, some soils are deficient in one or more of the raw materials required for the normal course of the chemical processes. Involved in the production of certain plants. Such deficiencies may prevent the production of particular plants entirely, they may result in abnormal or unhealthy plants, or. They may so alter the composition of the resulting products that they cause unhealthy conditions in animals consuming them as food.
