Book Plant and Animal Endemism in California

Download or read book Plant and Animal Endemism in California written by Susan Harrison and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2013-05-15 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: California is globally renowned for its biological diversity, including its wealth of unique, or endemic, species. Many reasons have been cited to explain this abundance: the complex geology and topography of its landscape, the special powers of its Mediterranean-type climate, and the historic and modern barriers to the wider dispersal of its flora and fauna. Plant and Animal Endemism in California compiles and synthesizes a wealth of data on this singular subject, providing new and updated lists of native species, comparing patterns and causes of both plant and animal endemism, and interrogating the classic explanations proposed for the state’s special significance in light of new molecular evidence. Susan Harrison also offers a summary of the innovative tools that have been developed and used in California to conserve and protect this stunning and imperiled diversity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This long-anticipated reference and sourcebook for CaliforniaÕs remarkable ecological abundance provides an integrated assessment of each major ecosystem typeÑits distribution, structure, function, and management. A comprehensive synthesis of our knowledge about this biologically diverse state, Ecosystems of California covers the state from oceans to mountaintops using multiple lenses: past and present, flora and fauna, aquatic and terrestrial, natural and managed. Each chapter evaluates natural processes for a specific ecosystem, describes drivers of change, and discusses how that ecosystem may be altered in the future. This book also explores the drivers of CaliforniaÕs ecological patterns and the history of the stateÕs various ecosystems, outlining how the challenges of climate change and invasive species and opportunities for regulation and stewardship could potentially affect the stateÕs ecosystems. The text explicitly incorporates both human impacts and conservation and restoration efforts and shows how ecosystems support human well-being. Edited by two esteemed ecosystem ecologists and with overviews by leading experts on each ecosystem, this definitive work will be indispensable for natural resource management and conservation professionals as well as for undergraduate or graduate students of CaliforniaÕs environment and curious naturalists.

Download or read book California Serpentines written by Arthur R. Kruckeberg and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 1985-04-12 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive treatment of an important segment of the flora of California: native plants that have varying degrees of fidelity to serpentine rock and soil that make up over 1100 square miles in the Coast Ranges and the Sierra Nevada. Many of California's unique endemic plants are found nowhere else but on serpentine; over 200 species, subspecies, and varieties of native plants are restricted to some degree to serpentine. The author describes the geology, soils, and mineral nutrition of serpentines (low in normal essential nutrients, high in magnesium, iron, and toxic heavy metals, nickel, and chromium), the vegetation and flora that tolerate this inhospitable habitat, the fauna on serpentines, and management/conservation problems associated with serpentines. This is an essential guide to an important aspect of the flora of California.

Book Modern Extinctions

  • Release : 2013
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 51 pages

Download or read book Modern Extinctions written by and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: California is rich in natural biodiversity, but over the last century our state has lost 75% of its indigenous plant and animal species primarily due to habitat loss caused by human influences. Most of the state of California lies within a biodiversity hotspot known as the California Floristic Province, an area of the highest diversity of endemics, plants, and animals that are not found anywhere else in the world. California was named a biodiversity hotspot in 1996, with only 33 other places in the world designated as such. Part of what makes California a hotspot is that its spectacular biodiversity is seriously threatened by human population growth resulting in intensified use of natural resources and habitat loss. This reality led to the focus of my graduate work, which takes both an objective and subjective stand, and culminated in my MFA thesis exhibition: Modern Extinctions: Visually Interpreting Species Extinction in Southern California. Modern Extinctions was exhibited in the Flor y Canto Gallery, November 12-15, 2012, at San Diego State University in California. Since my goal is to educate others and raise public awareness based on current research by leading scientists and researchers in the field, the method I chose to achieve these goals is Information Graphics, which can visually interpret scientific data. In Modern Extinctions, I employed information graphics in a way that would clearly communicate with an audience that also includes school-age children. I illustrated the data using a color pencil technique and presented the material in both print and interactive, screen-based media. My graphic models visually transform dry facts, statistics, and complex data into accessible information through hand-drawn illustrations. My handmade limited-edition books and woodcut prints provide a meaningful, subjective outlet to express my personal anger and frustration over the accelerated rate of species extinction. The final project of the exhibit is an interactive app developed for the education department at the San Diego Zoo Global, Institute for Conservation Research at Safari Park.
