Book Planning After Petroleum

Download or read book Planning After Petroleum written by Jago Dodson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of Planning after Petroleumis to chart the myriad urban planning problems posed by petroleum depletion and to identify strategies and measures that can secure cities against rising oil prices. The book is founded in the growing scholarly and policy recognition that the world is facing an energy crunch, most sharply in the supply of petroleum. This crunch will accelerate oil prices with flow on effects into national economies and especially cities. The book has four basic purposes. First the book seeks to fill gaps in the weak scholarly scientific literature on the challenge of petroleum depletion by collecting together leading authors on this topic into a focused dedicated volume. Second, the book adds to the urban planning and built environment literature via dedicated treatments of various aspects of planning, cities and petroleum depletion. Third, the book offers a raft of options and policies for practitioners who will be increasingly expected to resolve many of the urban challenges linked to higher oil prices. Fourth, the book seeks to report the authors' insights through robust and informative scholarship that is also accessible to a wide audience. The book has a deliberate international focus which actively includes comparative material to make it relevant across multiple planning and policy jurisdictions.

Book Oil Prices and the Future of OPEC

Download or read book Oil Prices and the Future of OPEC written by Theodore H. Moran and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-09-16 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The policy of the United States and, by extension, that of many oil importing countries, toward OPEC countries is in large part a function of an estimate of the factors that condition oil decisions in exporting countries. In this title, originally published in 1978, Ted Moran examines how immune OPEC can expect to be to the struggles over market shares that traditionally have beset attempts to organize natural resource cartels. Moran’s research leads him to argue that skyrocketing commitments to growth and social betterment leave little slack in national budgets and thus preclude output reductions for any extended period, or at least act as a substantial deterrent, unless such reductions come in support of an effort to raise real oil prices substantially. For any student interested in international policy making, economic development, or environmental studies, this title offers fascinating insights into the oil industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of men who are hurting—and hurting America by their absence Man Out describes the millions of men on the sidelines of life in the United States. Many of them have been pushed out of the mainstream because of an economy and society where the odds are stacked against them; others have chosen to be on the outskirts of twenty-first-century America. These men are disconnected from work, personal relationships, family and children, and civic and community life. They may be angry at government, employers, women, and "the system" in general—and millions of them have done time in prison and have cast aside many social norms. Sadly, too many of these men are unsure what it means to be a man in contemporary society. Wives or partners reject them; children are estranged from them; and family, friends, and neighbors are embarrassed by them. Many have disappeared into a netherworld of drugs, alcohol, poor health, loneliness, misogyny, economic insecurity, online gaming, pornography, other off-the-grid corners of the internet, and a fantasy world of starting their own business or even writing the Great American novel. Most of the men described in this book are poorly educated, with low incomes and often with very few prospects for rewarding employment. They are also disproportionately found among millennials, those over 50, and African American men. Increasingly, however, these lost men are discovered even in tony suburbs and throughout the nation. It is a myth that men on the outer corners of society are only lower-middle-class white men dislocated by technology and globalization. Unlike those who primarily blame an unjust economy, government policies, or a culture sanctioning "laziness," Man Out explores the complex interplay between economics and culture. It rejects the politically charged dichotomy of seeing such men as either victims or culprits. These men are hurting, and in turn they are hurting families and hurting America. It is essential to address their problems. Man Out draws on a wide range of data and existing research as well as interviews with several hundred men, women, and a wide variety of economists and other social scientists, social service providers and physicians, and with employers, through a national online survey and in-depth fieldwork in several communities.

Book The World After Cheap Oil

Download or read book The World After Cheap Oil written by Rauli Partanen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-10-24 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Substantial evidence suggests that we are currently living at the peak of oil production with few prospects for cheap oil ever returning. Yet the media, politicians and regular people have hardly started to talk about what this means. Oil literally runs our societies from transportation to food production to economic activity. Without oil, everything stops. There are powerful arguments that if we fail to increase oil production, we will also fail to grow our economy as a whole. For oil importing western nations the news is bleak; higher oil prices seem to put a glass ceiling on their economic growth, making current debt problems worse no matter what monetary and economic policies we might choose. The World After Cheap Oil offers a thorough package of information about oil; its uses and its role in our society’s important sectors. It presents the most prominent substitutes and alternatives, and their limits and promises. It also delves deep into the many risks, problems and mechanisms that can make the world after cheap oil a much more unstable place for nations and humanity as a whole. The book also explains why there has been so little public debate on the subject, and what the future might look like after oil production starts its final, terminal decline.
