Book excerpt: The eminent political activist examines the principles and strategies of imperial violence and propaganda from American colonization to the modern day. In this incisive study, Noam Chomsky demonstrates that "the great work of subjugation and conquest" has changed little over the years. Analyzing American policy and its consequences in Haiti, Latin America, Cuba, Indonesia, and even areas of the Third World developing in the United States, Chomsky draws striking parallels across centuries of imperialist adventures. Year 501 sets out a compelling argument that the murder and exploitation of modern-day imperialism—and the denialism that allows it to flourish—are inextricably linked to the genocides of colonial times. This edition includes a new preface by the author.

Book excerpt: Barsamian, the founder of Alternative Radio, and Chomsky, allegedly the most quoted author in the modern era, have forged a symbiotic relationship that manages to distill Chomsky's political philosophies and make them accessible. Barsamian's historically grounded, well-informed and probing questions prompt Chomsky to deconstruct concepts of class, media and economics. Chomsky deftly addresses domestic and foreign conundrums including health care, the recent crime bill and NAFTA. While these interviews span a two-year period and end early in 1994, they remain provocative and timely, with Chomsky's insights on Haiti, Northern Ireland and the Middle East proving especially resonant. Ultimately, Rabble serves as a Chomsky primer that is without condescension, and the question-and-answer format shows him at his most concise and adroit. His criticism exposes democracies as business-run societies that render the general population isolated from politics, persuasively suggesting that we are on the verge of a social breakdown. What sets this work apart from other reluctant messiahs who simply intellectualize suffering, is that Barsamian and Chomsky discuss avenues for activism-strengthening unions, following grassroots organizations or simply reading between the lines. Together they act as a lens, enabling the reader to see what has been there, hidden in plain sight. FROM Publisher's Weekly -- Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Download or read book A Grammar of Eton written by Mark L.O. Van de Velde and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2008-08-27 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Grammar of Eton is the first description of the Cameroonian Bantu language Eton. It is also one of the few complete descriptions of a North-western Bantu language. The complex tonology of Eton is carefully analysed and presented in a simple and consistent descriptive framework, which permits the reader to keep track of Eton's many tonal morphemes. Phonologists will be especially interested in the analysis of stem initial prominence, which manifests itself in a number of logically independent phenomena, including length of the onset consonant, phonotactic skewing and number of tonal attachment sites. Typologists and Africanists working on morphosyntax will find useful analyses of, among others, gender and agreement; tense, aspect, mood and negation; and verbal derivation. They will encounter many morphosyntactic differences between Eton and the better known Eastern and Southern Bantu languages, often due to evolutions shaped by maximality constraints on stems. The chapters on clause structure and complex constructions provide data hardly found in sources on the languages of the region, including descriptions of non-verbal clauses, focus, quasi-auxiliaries and adverbial clauses.
