Book Biology of the Peregrine and Gyrfalcon in Greenland

Download or read book Biology of the Peregrine and Gyrfalcon in Greenland written by William A. Burnham and published by Museum Tusculanum Press. This book was released on 1984 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A ten year study began in 1972 in West Greenland to investigate the breeding biology of the peregrine falcon. Data on nesting gyrfalcons were also collected. Thirty-four peregrine nesting sites were examined in the 6050 km2 inland study area near Søndre Strømfjord. Limited research also centered in Disko Bugt and Frederikshåb. Peregrines were found nesting predominantly on high, south-facing cliffs, which overlooked large areas. The mean minimum distance between peregrine eyries was 7.7 km for the inland area (1972 and 1973) and 55 km for the coast (1974). Approximately 60 percent of the inland nesting sites were occupied each year. A ten-year average production of 1.90 young per occupied site and 2.78 young per successful site was determined. Lapland longspurs, snow buntings, wheatears, and redpolls comprised 90 percent of the peregrines diet. Raven nests and prey availability may be the most significant factor affecting falcon density. Addled peregrine eggs, eggshell fragments, and peregrine prey species were collected. Whole eggs averaged 14.3 ppm wet weight (305 ppm lipid weight ) DDE, while eggshell measurements showed a 16 percent thinning compared with pre-1940 eggs from Greenland. Prey species carried low levels of DDE. The peregrine population appears to be at a near critical contamination level, and a small increase in DDE level could contribute to a population decline. No indication of a decline has been observed during the study, and the population appears stable. The project banded 185 peregrines, from which 8 recoveries occurred. The recoveries suggest peregrines migrate south to winter in South America.

Book Advances in Microbial Ecology

Download or read book Advances in Microbial Ecology written by K. Marshall and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Microbial Ecology was established by the International Com mittee on Microbial Ecology (ICOME) to provide a means for in-depth, critical, and even provocative reviews to emphasize current trends in the rapidly expanding area of microbial ecology. Advances in Microbial Ecol ogy is now recognized as a major source of information and inspiration both for practicing and for prospective microbial ecologists. The majority of reviews published in Advances have been prepared by leaders in par ticular areas following invitations provided by the Editorial Board. Although the Board intends to continue its policy of soliciting reviews, individual microbial ecologists are encouraged to submit outlines of unsolicited contributions to any member of the Editorial Board for con sideration for inclu~ion in Advances. Volume 9 of Advances in Microbial Ecology covers a particularly broad range of topics related to microbial ecology. The potential for applying ribosomal RNA sequence analysis for the definition of natural microbial populations is considered by N. R. Pace, D. A. Stahl, D. J. Lane, and G. J. Olsen. Other reviews on techniques include the applica tion of microelectrode technology to microbial ecosystems by N. P. Revsbech and B. B. J0rgensen and the use of rates of nucleic acid synthe sis to determine bacterial growth rates in natural aquatic habitats by D. J. W. Moriarty. The contribution by T. Fenchel discusses the ecology of heterotrophic microflagellates. J. H. Andrews and R. F. Harris present the concept of r- and K-selection and its relevance to microbial ecology.

Download or read book The Choanoflagellates written by Barry S. C. Leadbeater and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-01-08 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Choanoflagellates have three distinctive claims to fame: they are the closest, living, unicellular relatives of animals; they are a major component of aquatic microbial foodwebs; and one group is remarkable for its siliceous basket-like coverings. This landmark book offers a unique synthesis of over forty years of choanoflagellates research. Key areas are covered, from the phylogenetic evidence supporting the sister-group relationship between choanoflagellates and Metazoa, to choanoflagellate distribution and diversity in marine and freshwater environments. The structure and assembly of choanoflagellate loricae is also presented together with a full discussion of a novel example of 'regulatory evolution', suggesting that the switch from nudiform to tectiform cell division and lorica production was achieved by a sudden reorganisation of existing structures and mechanisms. Providing an authoritative summary of what is currently known about choanoflagellates, this title will serve as a foundation upon which future research and discussion can take place.

Download or read book Marine Phytoplankton written by Carmelo R Tomas and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine Phytoplankton: A Guide to Naked Flagellates and Coccolithophorids provides an introduction to marine planktonic flagellates. It emphasizes the biological and physical features that are needed to identify these species, and presents only those methods that are critical for this task while relying on other publications that have extensively covered general phytoplankton research methods. The book begins with an overview of marine planktonic organisms, describing their evolution and classification as well as the difficulties in identifying planktonic marine flagellates. The discussion then turns to marine planktonic flagellates, including Chromophyta, Chlorophyta, and zooflagellates (Phylum Zoomastigophora). It presents techniques used in flagellate studies, common flagellate synonyms, and an index of flagellate taxa. The chapter on modern coccolithophorids includes generic and species descriptions, a list of common coccolithophorid synonyms, and an index of coccolithophorid taxa. This text was written for serious plankton workers who seek to hone their skills in identifying marine flagellated species.

Book Evolution of Fungi and Fungal Like Organisms

Download or read book Evolution of Fungi and Fungal Like Organisms written by Stefanie Pöggeler and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-09-12 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sequence analyses of numerous fungal genomes over the past two decades have provided us with extensive insights into the phylogenetic relationships of fungi and the distribution of genes and their inferred functions, across the fungal kingdom. It is now possible to answer questions about the origin of the fungal kingdom and fungal evolution with an analytical precision that was not possible before. This fully revised and updated 2nd edition of The Mycota, Vol. 14, addresses major aspects of fungal evolution. The book is divided into four sections covering the following main topics: • Evolutionary roots of fungi • Evolution of pathogenic strategies • Evolution of mutualistic interactions • Evolution of metabolism and development in fungi Fungi are among the oldest eukaryotic groups in the living world. The aim of this book is to better understand the history and importance of fungi, as well as the characteristics that distinguish them from their sister group, the metazoans, and other fungus-like groups such as the slime molds and oomycetes. Many fungal species are important pathogens of animals and plants and have distinct but parallel pathogenicity strategies. Mutualistic interactions of fungi with other organisms are crucial for their survival in different ecological niches and have a great influence on their evolution and the design of their genomes. Metabolism is one of the most important features of life, and the diversity of metabolic processes is best understood by considering evolution. Studies of fungal metabolism have traditionally focused on metabolites of particular interest, namely mycotoxins, pathogenicity factors, antibiotics, and other compounds with interspecific activity. This volume will be of great interest to mycologists, evolutionary biologists, and fungal geneticists, as well as to lecturers and students of microbiology and mycology.
