Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PLANET AMERICA out of orbit offers a comparison between the United States and Europe, especially the Nordic countries of Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Iceland and Finland. These wealthy capitalistic nations with their socialist programs have the highest standards of living in the world and equality among its citizens is considered one of the most important objectives in their societies. The new Progressives in American politics have begun to embrace these Nordic values to combat policies favoring the wealthy and big business. They are striving to promote ideas and policies that should enhance the chances of U.S. citizens enjoying what people in Europe, especially the Nordic countries enjoy: health care for all, free college education, and far more financial equality, instead of poverty and slums. With the emergence of Donald Trump as president, the United States is falling into a position similar to many third world countries. America already had the impoverishment, the ghettos, and the crime. All it needs to add is the disappearance of the middle class slipping into destitution and the rich getting richer. Government protocol like the Trump trillion-dollar tax cut may be the most obvious beginning of that spiral. The coronavirus made the United States an international pariah by being the only Industrial Nation to succumb to its carnage and not have the means to conquer it. The pandemic in American was so severe that its citizens were forbidden to travel to Europe. This book should be read by all Americans who have come to think that their country has been changing to an acceptance of values that are no longer wholesome and to a large degree, effect vast numbers of people in an unjust way.

Book The Pluto Files The Rise and Fall of America s Favorite Planet

Download or read book The Pluto Files The Rise and Fall of America s Favorite Planet written by Neil deGrasse Tyson and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2009-12-07 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times best-selling author chronicles America's irrational love affair with Pluto, man's best celestial friend. In August 2006, the International Astronomical Union voted Pluto out of planethood. Far from the sun, tiny, and eccentric in orbit, it's a wonder Pluto has any fans. Yet during the mounting debate over Pluto's status, Americans rallied behind the extraterrestrial underdog. The year of Pluto's discovery, Disney created an irresistible pup by the same name, and, as one NASA scientist put it, Pluto was "discovered by an American for America." Pluto is entrenched in our cultural, patriotic view of the cosmos, and Neil deGrasse Tyson is on a quest to discover why. Only Tyson can tell this story: he was involved in the first exhibits to demote Pluto, and, consequently, Pluto lovers have freely shared their opinions with him, including endless hate mail from third graders. In his typically witty way, Tyson explores the history of planet classification and America's obsession with the "planet" that's recently been judged a dwarf.

Book excerpt: In February 2003, American astronauts Donald Pettit and Kenneth Bowersox and Russian flight engineer Nikolai Budarin were on a routine fourteen-week mission maintaining the International Space Station. But then the space shuttle Columbia exploded far beneath them. With the launch program suspended indefinitely, these astronauts had suddenly lost their ride back to earth. Out of Orbit chronicles the efforts of the beleaguered mission controls in Houston and Moscow as they worked frantically against the clock, ultimately settling on a plan that felt, at best, like a long shot. Latched to the side of the space station was a Russian-built Soyuz TMA-1 capsule, the rocket equivalent of a 1976 Gremlin. Despite the inherent danger, the Soyuz became the only hope to return Bowersox, Budarin, and Pettit home. Their harrowing journey back to earth is a powerful reminder that space travel remains an incredibly dangerous pursuit.
