Book Elementary engineering fracture mechanics

Download or read book Elementary engineering fracture mechanics written by D. Broek and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When asked to start teaching a course on engineering fracture mechanics, I realized that a concise textbook, giving a general oversight of the field, did not exist. The explanation is undoubtedly that the subject is still in a stage of early development, and that the methodologies have still a very limited applicability. It is not possible to give rules for general application of fracture mechanics concepts. Yet our comprehension of cracking and fracture beha viour of materials and structures is steadily increasing. Further developments may be expected in the not too distant future, enabling useful prediction of fracture safety and fracture characteristics on the basis of advanced fracture mechanics procedures. The user of such advanced procedures m\lst have a general understanding of the elementary concepts, which are provided by this volume. Emphasis was placed on the practical application of fracture mechanics, but it was aimed to treat the subject in a way that may interest both metallurgists and engineers. For the latter, some general knowledge of fracture mechanisms and fracture criteria is indispensable for an apprecia tion of the limita tions of fracture mechanics. Therefore a general discussion is provided on fracture mechanisms, fracture criteria, and other metal lurgical aspects, without going into much detail. Numerous references are provided to enable a more detailed study of these subjects which are still in a stage of speculative treatment.

Book Fields Near a Rapidly Propagating Crack Tip in an Elastic Perfectly Plastic Material

Download or read book Fields Near a Rapidly Propagating Crack Tip in an Elastic Perfectly Plastic Material written by J. D. Achenbach and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamic effects are investigated for the steady-state fields of stress and deformation in theee immediate vicinity of a rapidly propagating crack tip in an elastic perfectly-plastic material. Both the cases of anti-plane strain and in-plane strain have been considered. The governing equations in the plastic regions are hyperbolic in nature. Simple wave solutions together with uniform fields provide explicit asymptotic expressions for the stresses and the strains in the near-tip regions. The dynamic solutions describe a region of plastic loading which completely surrounds the propagating crack tip. (Author).

He empha sized that the Federal Republic of Germany is presently in need of strengthening the engineering manpower in order to keep her in a competitive position. The Conference was officially cast off with the leading plenary lectures that under lined the theme of the technical lectures for the first day. This pattern was observed for the five-day meeting. The interplay between material and design re quirements was the theme and emphasized in many of the technical presentations that amounted to approximately ninety (90) papers.

Book Analysis and Mechanics

Download or read book Analysis and Mechanics written by D.M.R. Taplin and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-09 with total page 563 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysis and Mechanics contains the proceedings of the Fourth International Conference on Fracture held at the University of Waterloo in Canada in June 1977. The conference provided a forum for discussing fracture mechanics and analysis involving a wide variety of materials, particularly large structures. Topics covered range from crack growth to dynamic processes and stress intensity factors, along with fracture in nonlinear systems. Comprised of 64 chapters, this volume begins by describing a numerical approach for modeling stable crack growth and fracture criteria. The reader is then introduced to the continuum theory of dislocations and its application to fracture mechanics; initiation of crack propagation in ductile structures; and finite element analysis of an impact test. Subsequent chapters focus on stress and crack-displacement intensity factors in elastodynamics; plastic fracture analysis of a cracked cylinder under displacement controlled loading; energy considerations in dynamic crack propagation and arrest; and the use of the J integral to measure the resistance of mild steel to slow stable crack growth. This book will be of interest to mechanical and structural engineers.

Book Introduction to Fracture Mechanics

Download or read book Introduction to Fracture Mechanics written by Robert O. Ritchie and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2021-05-27 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to Fracture Mechanics presents an introduction to the origins, formulation and application of fracture mechanics for the design, safe operation and life prediction in structural materials and components. The book introduces and informs the reader on how fracture mechanics works and how it is so different from other forms of analysis that are used to characterize mechanical properties. Chapters cover foundational topics and the use of linear-elastic fracture mechanics, involving both K-based characterizing parameter and G-based energy approaches, and how to characterize the fracture toughness of materials under plane-strain and non plane-strain conditions using the notion of crack-resistance or R-curves. Other sections cover far more complex nonlinear-elastic fracture mechanics based on the use of the J-integral and the crack-tip opening displacement. These topics largely involve continuum mechanics descriptions of crack initiation, slow crack growth, eventual instability by overload fracture, and subcritical cracking. - Presents how, for a given material, a fracture toughness value can be measured on a small laboratory sample and then used directly to predict the failure (by fracture, fatigue, creep, etc.) of a much larger structure in service - Covers the rudiments of fracture mechanics from the perspective of the philosophy underlying the few principles and the many assumptions that form the basis of the discipline - Provides readers with a "working knowledge" of fracture mechanics, describing its potency for damage-tolerant design, for preventing failures through appropriate life-prediction strategies, and for quantitative failure analysis (fracture diagnostics)

Book Elastic Plastic Analysis of Growing Cracks

Download or read book Elastic Plastic Analysis of Growing Cracks written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The elastic--plastic stress and deformation fields at the tip of a crack which grows in an ideally plastic solid under plane strain, shows small scale yielding conditions. Results of an asymptotic analysis suggests the existence of a crack tip stress state similar to that of the classical Prandtl field, but containing a zone of elastic unloading between the centered fan region and the trailing constant stress plastic region. The near tip expression for the rate of opening displacement delta at distance r from the growing tip is found to have the form delta-. = .cap alpha. J-.?sub o/ + .beta.(sigma/sub o//E) a-. ln(R/r) but the presence of the elastic wedge causes .beta. to have the revised value of 5.08 (for Poisson ratio .nu. = 0.3); also, (a = crack length, sigma/sub o/ = yield strength, E = elastic modulus, and J denotes the far-field value), and (1-.nu.2)K2/E for the small scale yielding conditions considered. The parameters .cap alpha. and R cannot be determined from the asymptotic analysis, but comparisons with finite element solutions suggest that, for small amounts of growth, .cap alpha. is approximately the same for stationary and growing cracks, and R scales approximately with the size of the plastic zone, being about 15% to 30% larger. For large scale yielding, a similar form applies with possible variations in .cap alpha. and .beta., in cases which maintain triaxial constraint at the crack tip. In the fully yielded case R is expected to be proportional to the dimension of the uncracked ligament. Model crack growth criterion requiring a critical delta at some fixed r from the tip, is re-examined in light of the more accurate solution. Results suggest that the J versus .delta.a relation describing growth is dependent on the extent of yielding. It is suggested that this dependency might be small for highly ductile materials, provided that a similar triaxial constraint is maintained in all cases.
