Book Plane Shock Wave Studies of Geologic Media

Book excerpt: Plane shock wave experiments have been conducted on eight geologic materials in an effort to determine the importance of time-dependent mechanical behavior. Of the eight rocks studied, only Westerly granite and nugget sandstone appear to show time independence. In the slightly porous materials (1-5 percent), Blair dolomite and sodium chloride, and in the highly porous (15 to 40 percent) rock, Mt. Helen tuff and Indiana limestone, time-dependent behavior is associated with the time required to close the available porosity. In water-saturated rocks the time dependence arises because the water that is present shows no indication of transformation to the higher pressure ice phases, thus suggesting the possibility that a metastable form of water exists under dynamic conditions.

Book Elastic Properties and Equations of State

Download or read book Elastic Properties and Equations of State written by Thomas J. Shankland and published by American Geophysical Union. This book was released on 1988 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Special Publications Series. To those who were attracted to geophysics because of the opportunity to do science out?]of?]doors, the idea of laboratory geophysics may seem a strange, if not contradictory, notion. Yet most of what we can say about those parts of the Earth that are not directly accessible comes from comparisons of field ?] derived results with laboratory measurements of physical properties. Perhaps the most successful example of this approach has been in the field of elasticity and equations of state. In application, measured and calculated velocities and densities are used with data derived from seismic velocity profiles to infer composition, mineralogy, and temperature from the lower crust through the mantle and core to the center of the Earth. Such comparisons are routinely applied, for instance, in distinguishing gabbro from granite in the crust. In other cases the methodology is less straightforward and this exercise leads to very controversial conclusions, particularly when in situ conditions are difficult to simulate in the laboratory.

Book Collisionless Shocks in the Heliosphere

Download or read book Collisionless Shocks in the Heliosphere written by Robert G. Stone and published by American Geophysical Union. This book was released on 1985 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series, Volume 35. Violent expansions of the solar corona cause transient shock waves which propagate outward from the sun at hundreds to thousands of kilometers per second; simple solar wind velocity gradients at the surface of the sun lead to high-speed streams overtaking slower streams, forming corotating shocks; and steady state supermagnetosonic solar wind flow past objects such as the planets lead to standing bow shocks. However, the solar wind plasma is so hot and tenuous that charged particle Coulomb collisions produce negligible thermalization or dissipation on scale sizes less than 0.1 AU. The irreversible plasma heating by these shocks is accomplished by wave-particle interactions driven by plasma instabilities. Hence these shocks are described as "collisionless."

Book Identification of Seismic Sources Earthquake or Underground Explosion

Download or read book Identification of Seismic Sources Earthquake or Underground Explosion written by Eystein S. Husebye and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 867 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of this NATO Advanced Study Institute was seismic monitoring under a nuclear test ban - an application of scienti fic knowledge and modern technology for a political purpose. The international political objective of a comprehensive nuclear test ban provided in turn the motivation for our technical and scientific discussions. In order to obtain a historical perspec tive on the progress of the work towards a comprehensive test-ban treaty (CTB), it is necessary to go back to 1958, when a confer ence of scientific experts in Geneva made the first steps toward an international seismic monitoring system. However, agreement on actual capabilities of a monitoring system for verifying compliance with such a treaty was not achieved, and thus the conference did not lead to immediate political results. After the Partial Test Ban Treaty of 1963, which banned nuclear explosions in the atmosphere, outer space and under the seas, renewed interest in the seismological verification of a CTB took place. A number of countries initiated large-scale research efforts toward detecting and identifying underground nuclear explosions, and it was in this context that the large aperture seismic arrays NORSAR and LASA were established. This type of development resulted in excellent seismic data in digital form and was thus of great irnprotance to the seismological com munity.

Book Experimental Studies of Stress Wave Propagation in Earth Media

Download or read book Experimental Studies of Stress Wave Propagation in Earth Media written by M. W. McKay and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The response of several geologic materials to explosively induced spherical shock waves has been studied. Measurements made include stress, particle velocity, and strain gauge time histories at stress levels from 10 to 150 kbars. The influence of water content and cracks was also studied. Gas-gun impact experiments employing oblique target and impactor design have demonstrated the feasibility of studying the propagation of shear waves in plane geometry. (Author).

Book Shock Wave Science and Technology Reference Library Vol 2

Download or read book Shock Wave Science and Technology Reference Library Vol 2 written by Y. Horie and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-04-26 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first of several volumes on solids in the Shock Wave Science and Technology Reference Library. This is a unique collection, and the library as a whole sets out to comprehensively and authoritatively cover and review at research level the subject matter with all its ramifications. All the chapters are self-contained and can be read independently of each other, though they are of course thematically interrelated.
