Book excerpt: IN Ballistic Research Laboratories rept. no. 1114 (AD-247 271) the nonlinear motion of symmetric missiles was analyzed by means of a perturbation technique. Owing to the algebraic complexity of this technique, it was only applied to the relatively simple problem of nearly circular motion. This report shows that the planar motion of nonspinning symmetric missiles possesses similar algebraic simplicity. The influence of various cubic static and damping moments is investigated in detail. Planar limit oscillations about a trim angle are found to exist under certain conditions. Finally, the analysis is combined with the almost circular motion analysis of BRL report no. 1114 to determine the basic features of the complete generalized amplitude plane. (Author).

The quasi-linear analysis is generalized to treat the motion of a missile with a relatively simple double-valued static moment and cubic damping moments. The associated amplitude plane is discussed and the special case of planar motion is examined in detail. The quasi-linear frequency and damping are compared with exact values and conditions for the existence of planar limit cycles are stated. (Author).

Book excerpt: Although the effect of an exponentially varying air density on the angular motion of a re-entering missile has been intensively studied for linear aerodynamic moments, this effect for nonlinear moments has only been investigated by a quasi-linear technique and this work was limited to planar motion. In this report, various modifications of the quasi-linear analysis for a cubic static moment are compared with the exact solutions and the best of these used to determine the general effect of varying density on combined pitching and yawing motion. Next the perturbation method which makes use of the exact solution for a cubic static moment is considered and the necessary modifications introduced by the varying density are made. The predicted density-gradient-induced damping for planar motion is determined for both theories and compared with the numerical integration of the exact differential equation. The perturbation prediction is found to be superior. (Author).

Book excerpt: The linearized angular motion of a symmetric missile is developed in some detail with some consideration of the rolling motion, drag, aerodynamic jump and the effect of varying coefficients. The tricyclic motion of a missile with misaligned control surfaces in briefly considered. This linear theory is, then, applied to the analysis of ballistic range data. Next, simple cubic nonlinearities in static moment and Magnus moment are treated by a quasi-linear analysis and these cubic coefficients obtained from ballistic range flight data. More generalized relations for arbitrary symmetric nonlinear terms are derived and their use in the construction of "amplitude" planes indicated. These amplitude planes have proven to be quite useful for the prediction of missile flight performance. Finally, the influence of strongly nonlinear static moments is determined by a perturbation method which makes use of two quasi-constants of the motion--total energy and angular momentum.

This analysis indicates the existence of three special spin rates - zero spin, resonant spin, and approximately three times resonant spin. The exact solution for the small amplitude motion about a large trim angle of a nonspinning missile with a cubic static moment is obtained and the quasi-linear relations are shown to agree well with this exact result. Relations for a cubic damping moment and a cubic lift force are derived. (Author).
