Book excerpt: She was the daughter of Sonoo, a Hill-man, and Jadeh his wife. One year their maize failed, andtwo bears spent the night in their only poppy-field just above the Sutlej Valley on the Kotgarth side;so, next season, they turned Christian, and brought their baby to the Mission to be baptized. TheKotgarth Chaplain christened her Elizabeth, and "Lispeth" is the Hill or pahari pronunciation.Later, cholera came into the Kotgarth Valley and carried off Sonoo and Jadeh, and Lispethbecame half-servant, half-companion to the wife of the then Chaplain of Kotgarth. This was afterthe reign of the Moravian missionaries, but before Kotgarth had quite forgotten her title of"Mistress of the Northern Hills."Whether Christianity improved Lispeth, or whether the gods of her own people would have doneas much for her under any circumstances, I do not know; but she grew very lovely. When a Hill girlgrows lovely, she is worth traveling fifty miles over bad ground to look upon. Lispeth had a Greekface-one of those faces people paint so often, and see so seldom. She was of a pale, ivory colorand, for her race, extremely tall. Also, she possessed eyes that were wonderful; and, had she not beendressed in the abominable print-cloths affected by Missions, you would, meeting her on the hill-sideunexpectedly, have thought her the original Diana of the Romans going out to slay.Lispeth took to Christianity readily, and did not abandon it when she reached womanhood, as dosome Hill girls. Her own people hated her because she had, they said, become a memsahib andwashed herself daily; and the Chaplain's wife did not know what to do with her. Somehow, onecannot ask a stately goddess, five foot ten in her shoes, to clean plates and dishes. So she played withthe Chaplain's children and took classes in the Sunday School, and read all the books in the house, and grew more and more beautiful, like the Princesses in fairy tales. The Chaplain's wife said that thegirl ought to take service in Simla as a nurse or something "genteel." But Lispeth did not want totake service. She was very happy where she was. When travellers-there were not many in those years-came to Kotgarth, Lispeth used to lockherself into her own room for fear they might take her away to Simla, or somewhere out into theunknown world. One day, a few months after she was seventeen years old, Lispeth went out for a walk. She didnot walk in the manner of English ladies-a mile and a half out, and a ride back again. She coveredbetween twenty and thirty miles in her little constitutionals, all about and about, between Kotgarthand Narkunda. This time she came back at full dusk, stepping down the breakneck descent intoKotgarth with something heavy in her arms

Book excerpt: Plain Tales from the Hills (published 1888) is the first collection of short stories by Rudyard Kipling. Out of its 40 stories, "eight-and-twenty", according to Kipling's Preface, were initially published in the Civil and Military Gazette in Lahore, Punjab, British India, between November 1886 and June 1887. "The remaining tales are, more or less, new." (Kipling had worked as a journalist for the CMG-his first job-since 1882, when he was not quite 17.) The title refers, by way of a pun on "Plain" as the reverse of "Hills", to the deceptively simple narrative style; and to the fact that many of the stories are set in the Hill Station of Simla-the "summer capital of the British Raj" during the hot weather. Not all of the stories are, in fact, about life in "the Hills": Kipling gives sketches of many aspects of life in British India. The tales include the first appearances, in book form, of Mrs. Hauksbee, the policeman Strickland, and the Soldiers Three (Privates Mulvaney, Ortheris and Learoyd). Joseph Rudyard Kipling ( 30 December 1865 - 18 January 1936) was an English journalist, short-story writer, poet, and novelist. Kipling's works of fiction include The Jungle Book (1894), Kim (1901), and many short stories, including "The Man Who Would Be King" (1888). His poems include "Mandalay" (1890), "Gunga Din" (1890), "The Gods of the Copybook Headings" (1919), "The White Man's Burden" (1899), and "If-" (1910). He is regarded as a major innovator in the art of the short story;[3] his children's books are classics of children's literature; and one critic described his work as exhibiting "a versatile and luminous narrative gift". Kipling was one of the most popular writers in the United Kingdom, in both prose and verse, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Henry James said: "Kipling strikes me personally as the most complete man of genius, as distinct from fine intelligence, that I have ever known."In 1907, at the age of 42, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, making him the first English-language writer to receive the prize, and its youngest recipient to date. He was also sounded out for the British Poet Laureateship and on several occasions for a knighthood, both of which he declined.Kipling's subsequent reputation has changed according to the political and social climate of the age and the resulting contrasting views about him continued for much of the 20th century.George Orwell called him a "prophet of British imperialism". Literary critic Douglas Kerr wrote: "[Kipling] is still an author who can inspire passionate disagreement and his place in literary and cultural history is far from settled. But as the age of the European empires recedes, he is recognised as an incomparable, if controversial, interpreter of how empire was experienced. That, and an increasing recognition of his extraordinary narrative gifts, make him a force to be reckoned with."Rudyard Kipling was born on 30 December 1865 in Bombay, in the Bombay Presidency of British India, to Alice Kipling (née MacDonald) and John Lockwood Kipling. Alice (one of four remarkable sisters) was a vivacious woman about whom Lord Dufferin would say, "Dullness and Mrs. Kipling cannot exist in the same room."Lockwood Kipling, a sculptor and pottery designer, was the Principal and Professor of Architectural Sculpture at the newly founded Sir Jamsetjee Jeejebhoy School of Art in Bombay.......

He has gone to his own people to tell them so." And the Chaplain's wife soothed Lispeth and said: "He will come back." At the end of two months, Lispeth grew impatient, and was told that the Englishman had gone over the seas to England. She knew where England was, because she had read little geography primers; but, of course, she had no conception of the nature of the sea, being a Hill girl. There was an old puzzle-map of the World in the House. Lispeth had played with it when she was a child. She unearthed it again, and put it together of evenings, and cried to herself, and tried to imagine where her Englishman was. As she had no ideas of distance or steamboats, her notions were somewhat erroneous. It would not have made the least difference had she been perfectly correct; for the Englishman had no intention of coming back to marry a Hill girl. He forgot all about her by the time he was butterfly-hunting in Assam. He wrote a book on the East afterwards. Lispeth's name did not appear.

Book excerpt: Originally written for the Lahore Civil and Military Gazette when he was 21, Kipling's stories tell of 'heat and bewilderment and wasted effort and broken faith'. He writes brilliantly and hauntingly about the barriers between the races, the classes and the sexes; and about innocence, not transformed into experience, but implacably crushed. This powerful collection includes The Other Man, The Arrest of Lieutenant Golightly and The Bronckhorst Divorce.

Book excerpt: Plain Tales from the Hills contains 40 stories written by Rudyard Kipling, the author of The Jungle Book and Kim. Published in 1888, this was the first short story collection by Kipling. With the geographical meaning of "Plain" contrasted with "Hills", the title's pun hints at both the cleverly simple narrative style of the stories, and that many of the them are situated in the Hill Station of Simla, which served as the British Raj's capital during the hot months.
